We could have left AJ out and played Cox predominantly forward to drop the ball to our smalls. Frampton had zero impact as a forward in the GF, so we haven't actually lost anything. Fin would have been ideal in the Adams role.

Other option is Beau, who needs to show more than just being a tackling honey badger. They've tried him in the middle this pre-season and he hasn't stuck.

I won't see it as a big issue if they give Fin a go soon. However, if he isn't selected in the first 4-6 weeks, after his great pre-season and obvious effort in tank improvement and doing everything they asked, then I worry that we're not thinking about the long term. Getting games into the next wave is crucial for sustained success. It was the one thing that I don't think was managed well last year.

Or perhaps the coaches, who have a much deeper and more intimate understanding of players’ strengths and weaknesses than any of us, have some reservations about Fin at AFL level and feel that he must first address some deficiencies? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think Fin will eventually break into the side but let’s be honest, he’s no Petracca or Bontempelli. He’ll be handy but is never going to move the needle in a big way.

If they had those sorts of reservations I doubt they’d have been talking him up they way they did over the offseason. I agree he’s unlikely to suddenly turn in to a star, but from what I’ve seen he should be able to become a solid footsoldier at AFL level. Certainly the idea that he’s “Callum Brown lite” that someone else suggested is pretty unfair. He showed enough in his preseason games to make me confident enough that he’s got much more potential than that.

Dropping somone coming into finals after 70+ games cancels that. You think JFN should not be considered if the coaches thought he had the better pre season. Oleg and him were neck and neck last season and still are. Oleg got the big prize end of last season, that shouldnt be a factor that counts against JFN when they are so close.
Agree. Coaches have a certain fondness for premiership players, but it is a new season.

Expectations for the game? I'm pumped tbh it's a huge match up straight off the bat. I think we could get thumped or I think we could come out guns blazing and get The W. I don't envision a narrow loss for us if we do get beaten but I'm not worried. I see us in the last game of the season again against The Lions. If we remain healthy and have our best players on Grand Final day we will go b2b reversing the trend of 2002-03.

Daicos for The Brownlow. Schultz will have a good year!

UP THA PIES!!!

Our full squad is the reason we won the flag. We are favourites to win again. Fly has shown every week he picks the best possible side for their roles. If Fin or Reef are in that best side for that week then they will get picked. We have a squad to cover injuries too so players should be hungry when they get their chance. How can anyone here second guess the selectors? We won the flag!

During Bucks coaching the bottom few players weren't good enough but we had to play them. Now we have talent missing out. Go pies.

Finn isn't better than anyone named, otherwise he'd be named. Not sure why so many people are upset about it. He'll probably break in and play games this year, whether starting 22 or sub or a mixture of both. To do that his form will have to enable that, and/or injuries.

We're all for winning now and qualifying for finals, qualifying for top 4 and winning finals. We can't gift games to players just because they might be a starting mid player in the next few years.

And at the end of the year if he goes, such is life. I'm sure we'd be looking to bring in an up and coming mid like Jhye Clark to replace him though.
Unlikely we will get Jhye Clark. Had a pearler of a game last week. He is getting a lot of midfield time & friends who know his family report he is loving life at the Cattery, still at home and a lot of his friends are local

He didn’t slip in the practice game. He played very well. The club is more than aware of his talent. He’s not a Cal Brown. If he was offered a contract today, he’d wait. Because there were teams queueing last year. He back himself in as he’d likely have left for someone not as good. Fin will have a career. He just needs opportunity. In the same boat as McInnes of needing that chance.
If he didn't slip in the practice match he would have been in the 22 that started against Richmond. I think a lot of posters don't understand how footy teams work. There isn't a line and coaches thinking its this guys turn next time. Finn gets the next spot only if he is doing better than Allan, Sullivan, HH etc. When a spot comes it will be the player who is performing at that time and the coaches see as the next best. Maybe it is Finn currently but that can change in a week or a fortnight.

As for what I mean by Cal Brown lite is at the same time in their careers Cal was a long way advanced on where Finn is currently. There is no guarantee that will ever change. I think it just helps to see it that way and not look at unproven players with rose coloured glasses

Your last sentence is a bit rich given the way you’ve gushed over Allan for the past 12 months.
And nah, he didn’t slip in the last game, he was among the players outside the 22 pushing for a spot, and arguably had the toughest job given we have a healthy midfield and there were spots for grab in both defence and forward due to injuries. Dean made a successful push, Fin didn’t make it despite being pretty much the best performed mid on ground in the short time he was given. If Pendles hadn’t gotten up I’m almost certain Fin would have been playing this week, but it wasn’t to be so he bides his time again.

The strike rate is about 1 in 20 for his confident b/s turning out as predicted. Don’t encourage it.

lol. Yup may have fed the beast!!

But just calling out what turned at to be true. He/she cops enough crap on here….thought I’d just give some positive feedback!!

Like it or loathe it, we’re a better board for those posts.

Yep I have had hopes for Allen based on potential and always acknowledged that word is one that can turn on you easily. I think Allen has slipped a fair way also. Maybe he is going to be a player but he looked very ordinary in the pre season. I have not given up on Finn or Ed but neither are tracking like good and very good AFL mids do. You can be an exception to that but not many are.

Fin is tracking fantiscally right now pre season. Who is Allen?
Can't wait for he and Edward to rip it up.

Eddie betts one of the best small forwards ever only averaged 12 disposals. It’s a tough gig the small forward role. A lot of what mccreery does is when he doesn’t have ball
In hand. I do agree it would be nice to get his average to a goal a game. Lots to do with confidence in his case
When you're lucky to get 6 possessions in a game, there is more of a need to do more when you don't have the ball. But what McCreery does offer is some x factor. His grand final game rewarded the club's faith in him.

Think I have said enough. Hope the kids and players like Reef and Finn who are fighting for a place come on strongly.
