The AFL really needs to start considering a relegation system. The talent pool clearly only reaches as far as 16 clubs. This SANFL proposal by Port Adelaide for another lower National League needs to happen. relegate WC and Norf until they're completive.

But how would the AFL know in advance who is in what position?

They probably wouldn't need to know for this round. As it is effectively a bonus 23rd round of footy, and 90% of teams are on neutral territory, it could just be written off as a one-off round of orchestrated clashes. Make it a Showdown weekend as well, as then 100% are on neutral territory.

The only problem is that doing it this way might create a situation where two teams meet in successive weeks, but that could be avoided pretty easily.

The fixture is so contrived anyway, what's one more tweak.
