Oppostion supporters thoughts on Eddie Betts

I was wondering if there is any positivity about this kid?

I've seen a lot of people be very negative about this kid, why? As a 17 year old, his first year was better than average, in fact quite surprising. Won't he improve his game because of the stereotype that he is only a small pocket forward player, or is it because he plays for Carlton and that suddenly degrades him and his ability?

I'm not saying he's up there with the best kids, I'm just wondering if any opposition supporters actually rate him and whether they think he will be decent for the future.

He's got enthusiasm and pace - you can't fault that.

Long term he probably needs more than one string to his bow, but for now he's the sort of live-wire Carlton's forward line needs.

Carlton's best performances last year came when the forwards were providing defensive pressure. The Wizard Cup campaign and the final in particular, were in large part won on the strength of that. Eddie helps the forward line with this as his closing speed is very good.

He's worth persisting with at least until he's fully developed.

18 year old.

Isn't he only a small forward pocket player?
He didn't show anything in the TAC Cup to suggest he could make it as a midfielder there, nor has he at AFL level.

A goal a game is a fantastic return when you look at averages, but in more than half of his games he didn't score a game. Now for a player that struggles to find a lot of the footy, that is where the critisism comes from.

Obviously as a young player he is afforded the time to develop his game and he probably has copped more than his fair share of flack. But at the moment he is just a forward pocket who can't play from the square and mark over head ala Moorcroft, and can't win enough ball to consistently hurt oppositions sides ala Davey/Lovett.

I think it is because he plays for Carlton that he played so much footy this season. He had a lot of quiet spells that wouldn't have seen him get games at performing clubs. For his own development it was a positive that Carlton gave him the opportunities, from the outside looking in, you see a kid who did very little in a lot of games.

I think I'll wait 12 months. I don't think he'll be as good as Lovett/Davey/Moorcroft, because I don't think he has their skill set. And I don't think he'll make it as a midfielder. As Carlton improve, he needs to find more of the footy, otherwise he may well go the way of Marty McGrath.

the guy got drafted top age, he started at 19 years, not 17 as u stated. not a bad first year, considering the ball never comes to carltons foward line a hell of a lot. needs to improve his edurance so he can run out games, not only in burst, and also to be tried on a wing, to use his pace and evasive techniques to advantage

JD, you've actually said something that's sensible. I'll bookmark it for future reference. :)

Yeah, I want feedback - good or bad. Just as long as it's honest... and the main board is the best place to do it.
History shows you will get more misses than you will hits. Still if you get it out there that you are expecting poor replies early, people will go out of their way to prove you wrong. ;)

Zeke gets usual marks for getting a Whitnall jibe into a Betts thread.

I forgot to mention the administrative blunder by the Blues short-changing the kid. ;)

Oh, and Pagan being a pr*ck and not taking him to Perth.

Probably a 150 game player, has got a bit of X-factor about him but I doubt he will ever be anything more than a forward pocket.
30 goals a year I would think would be a good return from him each year.

Eddie Betts has a number of things going for him, he reads the play well and has good goal sense. Probably the key positive for Betts is the way the Blues fans respond to him.

During the tough times a club needs a player that can drag people through the gates and Betts is this type of player..an exciting goalsneak who bring the crowd alive with a brilliant snap.

Eddie Betts will never be the cake but he could become the icing.
