At the end of next year we will see Oscar hit restricted free agency if he doesn't sign a new contract.

What are peoples preference out of the following?

1. Sign short term contract (2-4 years)
- protects us from possible injury issues (knee degeneration)
- allows other options (Shanahan/Reid etc., to develop and potentially replace)

2. Sign a long term contract (5+ years)
- locks up a gun forward long term
- exposed to injury risk

3. Leave in Free Agency
- lose one of the gun key forwards in the competition
- removes injury risk, frees up cash
- opens up space for young forwards (May/may not be ready)
- Potentially gain pick 3-5, giving us two top 5 picks, plus Hawks F1
4. Wait till end of season
- have him prove he's healthy and tailor offer accordingly
- risk upsetting by not having offer in place
- risk another club getting in his ear so that lose even if want to keep

I'm really not sure of what option to pick. At his best he's a gun, and think the type of player/age profile that could play with us through the rebuild. Would be a firm no prior to Waterman coming on last year, and us picking up some quality young options (noting they may not pan out), so open to the potential.

What makes 3 hard is well, is that he's an awesome bloke and captain of the club. Having said that, Tom Barrass was similar but we let him go, so who knows.

If west coast wanted to be brutal, they would only offer 3 years which will force him to explore FA.
But is this the club we want to turn into?

I think a 5 year contract is the maximum we should be offering. If he's not happy with that then look around for a better offer.

its just laughable players like mac andrew and max king are on massive long term contracts because clubs fear losing them.

I want him to be an Eagle for life, but also conscious about his knee.
If he wants a long term contract, the tail end needs to be performance based or with triggers (e.g. 5 yr contract with triggers for yrs 6+7).

It will all depend on how much time he's able to spend on the park this year.
Too early to speculate but if his knee is as bad as it seems, it might be a challenge.
At the conclusion of the season, we should offer him a contract depending on his viability to play consistently.
Have added as an option. There's pro's and con's on that as well.

The most realistic option is to wait until mid season and see how he goes. Most move decisions are made just after Easter. So agree to have realistic negotiations around April - May

That would allow his manager to discuss options with other clubs. From that, Oscar will know his alternative options in terms of length and value of contract.

By then, we will have a much better idea how the young talls are developing

Remember we hold significant advantage knowing we can match and have the cap to do so.

I would rather fully fit and roaring Oscar that any single draft pick. Question he has to answer is will he ever be fully fit. If we have doubts, let him know we love him but cannot justify the $$/duration combo

Come end season, we are
A. Happy to go long
B. Happy for him to get a club that has suitable currency for a trade
C. Make sure he gets an offer that will trigger band 1
D. Oscar is mates with Tom Harley and it is a pretty even deal trading places with Chad

So Happy Mastenator - can I have option 5 please

Pretty open to a range of options here. Certainly wouldn't be rushing into signing him up though I thought he basically has a 5 year offer on the table and him wanting something longer was the hold up.

A huge amount rests on whether he makes it through the preseason unscathed and is cherry ripe for round one, and whether his team mates [very young group now which to me don't seem all that enthralled in his personality] end up voting him captain again over the pre-season.

Happy for him to sign up on 5 years or less, preferably not on stupid money as we have far more important contracts to get over the line over the next 5 years.

Happy for him to sign on at 3-5 years then get traded end of year for Warner or for a multitude of high end picks.

Perhaps less happy for him to go as a free agent because if we have that 6-10 win season that nets us just the one first round pick [maybe as low as 6-8] when he's probably worth 2 first rounders if under contract.

Probably what I'd be most happy with is he signs up for 5 years on modest [think Barrass like] money, we go down to single captaincy model under Duggan or Jake, and Oscar just gets his body right, plays mostly forward this year but switches to defence longer term, where I think he'll stay healthier overall and be of most value to the club.

The five year deal currently on the table is borderline given his injury history. It's carrying too much risk for the club to take on. Going beyond that would be negligent from a list management perspective, and a high risk that it would turn into a junk contract for the club.

The contract needs to benefit both parties, and needs to strike a balance. If the length is the sticking point, you'd have to let Oscar explore opportunities.

Depends money we can certainly match you would imagine he would want to go to a contender so that probably limits him to 1 mil pa. Expect Brisbane to come hard at him and make it a difficult decision

I'd be keen for a front loaded 4 year contract. Removes the injury risk, and retains flexibility that if we agree at some stage that he's playing well, but he can/should move on, we get high picks in trading him and he gets a bump in salary (as we'd have paid upfront).

Worst case, he ends up injured and we don't have the long tail of high salary on the book for years.

This is all subject to getting through this season. Don't think we should be offering too much just now. Even if he has a down year, i'd imagine a team would come hard and offer enough for Band 1, based purely on his potential.

Would be crazy to not consider FA compo for Oscar. Gun, but another first rounder before Tassie would be super handy. We are stocked for big forwards

We might be stocked from a volume perspective, but not from a proven over time perspective.

By mid to late 2025 that perspective might shift if Jake and Jack continue their rise, and we see the green shoots of Archer and Jobe, but to this point it's still fairly speculative.

It will be an interesting watch around the Captaincy next season. Barrass missed out on the Captaincy in what I suspect was a co-ordinated move as he was looking around again. History may repeat in that regard.

I wouldn’t want anything more than five years. I also wouldn’t table an official offer until two months into the season. We can gauge his form, shanahan & Reid’s form, our form (for FA compo) and which clubs are interested (trade scenarios)
Yeah i really think we should draw it out a bit before making an offer. Need to see him back, fit and firing, and then work out where he sits in pecking order.

19 for Buddy - food for thought.
That's cause it was linked to Hawks finishing position.
If we're ever going to benefit from FA compo, it's while we're down the bottom end.

That said, if rumours that we tried to get Band 3 compo for Graham and AFL said "no chance", I wouldn't be surprised if we get a similar outcome for OA. They wouldn't want to be giving the Eagles a leg up.

The thought crossed my mind that they might play tough considering the outrage this past trade period with the Battle and Perryman compo (and the McKay compo the year before) but if a genuine player like Oscar wants to leave a bottom 4 club for what will likely be a 1+ million a year contract, I cant see any situation where we dont end up with band 1 compo in that situation. Even if North look to finish bottom 4 again and LDU wanting out netting them band 1 as well. Even if there is media outrage over the possibility.

Would rather he stay tbh, we'd get more out of Oscar playing for us these coming years than who we'd likely get with pick 3.

Nah just a vibe. Seen too many of those podcasts he's done with thumper and those poor young lads. I doubt anyone dislikes him or anything but would think there are senior players who the under 21s see differently and have a bit more reverence for. It'll be interesting to see how they vote.
