My point is if Essendon legitimately offered Gresham what he's worth, without being able to manipulate the compensation, it might only spit out an end of second round compensation pick.

Then St Kilda say you know what, we match that because we'd rather you trade us pick 30 than us getting pick 42.
The best course of action would be to get rid of compensation picks completely.
That way, these sorts of trades would be based on fair value, instead of clubs angling to get better compensation.
The McKay compo is an absolute joke.

Yup.
But that option was absolutely still possible.

It was on Dons to either go through with the trade at his value, or take it out of the equation.
So then the Dons decide he is not worth 30 and don't trade.

Forcing it basically removes restricted FA as everyone will just trade anyway....so what's the point of it?

No its not.
It absolutely wouldn't fix the problem.

All that would do is make the bad teams worse and the good teams better....every....single....year.

He's probably a 450-500k player and it's now in the twittersphere that Essendon's contract offer to him is 700k p/a. They don't offer that money without money to burn, so they've essentially overpaid 200k p/a to hang on to whatever pick St Kilda would've otherwise demanded (hypothetically say pick 30).

Anyway, Gresham is getting overpaid and under FA rules the Bombers can't adjust (extend and smooth or otherwise) so it's good for the player.

On the other hand you've got someone like Parish sitting there scratching his head at how close Gresham's offer is to his. And then you have a player like Archie Perkins OOC 2024 who's going to be majorly pissed off if he has a better year than Gresham next year and doesn't get a 700k offer.

That's why I laugh at Essendon's supposed TPP increase war chest because there's only so much money you can toss around before your existing players start getting shitty.

Agree with that.
But that's got nothing to do with the RFA rules around matching....that's just dons being dons!!

Lets be honest though....they have to use a minimum cap %. and they really don't have many players that are able to command a lot of money....so they overpay on middling talent because they have to meet a threshold.
Better them than us.

True. They'd have plenty of others getting paid more there than they would elsewhere. Which is part the reason why they hold onto players (Merrett, Parish for example) but also a contributor as to why they keep treading water.

Gresham is such a Stringer get IMO. Past his purple patch, probably doesn't improve. Another B grader to add to their long list l.

They really need their improvement to come from the bottom (draftees) up. Reid and Cox looked initially like decent pick ups but now trending towards being flops.

I don't understand why the acquiring club doesn't pay for them by matching the compo pick.

exactly this, the afl should have a formula to determine the player’s value and the receiving club should stump up, the current system penalises everyone else who moves down the draft order due to compo picks while the beneficiary pays nothing.

So Jamarra is waiting until next season to decide what he will do.
Just a tiny sliver of hope.

"WESTERN Bulldogs forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan will let things unfold into next season as the gun enters the final year of his contract.

Ugle-Hagan, the top pick in the 2020 draft, is contracted at the Bulldogs until the end of 2024 and speculation has already started about his future.

The 21-year-old's manager, Robbie D'Orazio, said they would wait to see how 2024 progressed."

Given how much of a mess WB are, it's the right move for him

Maybe the Bulldogs’ cap is like Carltank’s though, and everyone is on a zillion dollars because there’s no incentive to sacrifice money for team success?

Isn't that exactly what Brisbane did with Daniher?

Here's a comment from a bloke I know who follows St Kilda:

I feel sorry for Port. They have to deal with BOTH Essendon and Geelong. The only worse scenario would be to add Bell/Freo.

I don't understand why the acquiring club doesn't pay for them by matching the compo pick.
What?

No one would move via FA.
So we now end up with clubs trying to low ball to get players out……then the holding club just ups the ante to force a better compo match.

Either way, same situation as now….or do away with FA because no one will move vie that mechanism because the cost to move is too hard (why would anyone move interstate?!?)
Makes it all too hard for the player to move.

So might as well just do away with RFA.

Ugle-Hagan hasn’t quite set the world on fire like that but the Swans have seemingly spotted his star potential.

However, they’re not the only ones as on Fox Footy’s Trading Day’s panel said every team would likely be eyeing Ugle-Hagan.
Thank God we have journos with the ability to filter through all the noise, and find these crucial nuggets of essential but otherwise inaccessible information for football fans.

They have a formula….which no one likes.
So why would this magical formula be any different ?

Seriously….we are a very lucky club in that we don’t lose many FA…daisy our last one 10 years ago?

Imagine losing one every 2 years….see whether you’d be happy with the current format or not…..

the point of the post was about making the receiving club pay, no so much about if their formula needs revising or not

Nope.
That’s called a trade,

FA is exactly the opposite. To reward a player and give them the opportunity to move clubs….take that away by forcing a trade and it’s not FA.
