It’s been suggested to me that he still has a huge gambling problem.

Could be he needs get away from the game to recover from that addiction.

It’s a reflection on a societal problem that the AFL is fed by through advertising and sponsorship.
a friend used to tell me: gambling is a tax on stupidity.

A sad wasted talent.

Quitting AFL won't help him get over it. If he's a big gambling addict, he'll get sent free bets whenever there's a lull in betting. It's hideous.

And leads to further horrible stuff... witness recent case in Melbourne of horrific crimes directly linked to gambling debt

Haha. It's our fault? 🥴

... 'ex' supporters of Collingwood ??

Daisy is projecting a tad there.

Making the conscious decision to go to arch rivals Carlton as a free agent is a little different to being reluctantly traded to an uncompetitive North Melbourne.

I think we're a bit thin skinned. Daisy's comment is fine. He didn't single us out. As he pointed out, Stepho has been maligned by us, the media and some North supporters, and he's retired at 25 - being maligned has likely taken a toll.

Even so, I think there was a bit of that. Didnt want to do the hard yards, and couldnt adhere to the toughness required.

It's the wording of "mentally weak." Teacher and PC speak is: "He needs to work on his resilience." It means the same but doesn't get push back.

It’s a tough sport these days.
Passion wanes for a variety of reasons.
Physical toll, expectation, scrutiny and confidence.
The rewards are great but the capacity of the player to overcome all obstacles has never been greater.
Good luck Stevo.
Enjoy your retirement and the spring carnival lol. (Its you who ultimately judges life in the end).

Hopefully he discovers his love for footy again. Maybe he needs to go back to playing local footy for fun, sometimes it helps recapture why you fell in love with the sport.
Good luck to him wherever his life takes him.

Daisy said as much, just needs to find that spark again. Its a shame this is where it ended for him. Just goes to show, talent isn't everything. It gets you in the door, but after all, its hard work and drive that separates those who will succeed or fail.

The history of the game is littered with examples of players who had the talent but not the application.
Sier is a good example.
Nick is an example of a player with huge talent and the drive to be the best - and he already is at 21.

Yeah, for sure.
I definitely thought about Sier too. Talented, but not the drive. Gotta have both to succeed.
