Autopsy Our home losing streak and our current sorry state of affairs.

I'm a little baffled here by the emotive response to what was undoubtedly a poor effort. Considering the circumstances, can we really be that gutted that our team struggled to maintain their effort levels today? We picked several less midfielders than we ordinarily would, half the team is recovering from COVID, it's been a taxing opening three rounds of the season and we're playing several underdone players that wouldn't be near the AFL side right now if we had better availability (Edwards, West coming back from injuries). The fact that we struggled to execute any sort of game plan playing a vastly different 22 week to week should come as a surprise to no one.

We need to look at this year as an opportunity. COVID & injury has forced our hand into exposing our youth to games, something we've been reluctant to do in recent years. I reckon there's a bit to work with from what we've seen this year so far from guys like Luke Foley, Luke Edwards, Bailey Williams, Brady Hough & Jamaine Jones. Through necessity, these guys are likely to accumulate games this year and they're likely to be better for that. They're no world beaters but I think SPS, Naish, Witherden and Dixon have the potential to be good solid fringe players in a good side. When you consider that in the context of what we gave up for them, that's a bit of a win. Getting frustrated that these guys aren't better is probably looking at it out of context.

Obviously we'd love to be pumping games into elite talent right now but the reality is we don't have much of that on the list. Our first round draft pick busted his ankle when he first touched the ball in the preseason - that's just shit luck. We can't control that, it is what it is. Oscar Allen is probably the best young(ish) talent we've got, again, unavailable.

I think this year presents as an interesting opportunity for us. We could snatch a pretty high draft pick that we ordinarily wouldn't be bad enough to obtain. I reckon with a fit list we'd be sitting 3-0 right now, but still be facing the same issue of lacking the talent to replace the ageing stars we have. Instead, we've dropped three relatively easy fixtures and are set to regain most of our list back in time for a pretty hard stretch of games. I can see us having a good back end of the season, displaying the quality that I still believe is there, but still ultimately having dropped enough games to nab a top 5-6 pick. Involuntarily, this season has been forced into a development year of sorts, and I think as fans we will be ultimately be happier if we embrace this year as such. With some support from some actual midfielders playing for once, I reckon a bunch of these young/fringe types could really blossom.

On the live draft order we currently hold picks 2, 20 and 21. Realistically, I expect that to blow out to about 5, 25 and 30. We get those picks right, along with 20 odd games into some of the guys I mentioned, this could turn out to be a pretty productive year for us. It may all seem doom and gloom right now, but the transition is coming, and there's plenty we can still do this year to help that process along.
I think that the response has been to a side without Fyfe, Darcy, Mundy, Serong still managed to tear us a new one.

I would have thought our omissions trump theirs, plus the aforementioned 'recovering from COVID' factor. I think the 22 they picked trumped ours on talent regardless.

Negatives
Can’t remember the last time I saw a west player give a handball then block the chasing opposition player to give ther teammate space.

Langdon on the HFF at around 3 minutes into the last quarter is a foot behind young, young runs for the ball and Langdon just peels off to run and guard space instead of running at the contest.

Lazy, weak, unfit players standing flat footed all game watching their opponents run at will without a bother to work for the chase or put in an effort to find space.

Let’s be honest since 2018 we’ve been lazy and not up to any form of challenge. Every year it’s we have something to learn instead of being ruthless and getting the best out of our players. We’re the encouragement award club where you can come have a run and watch and be rewarded with a 3 year $400,000 contract.

A real positive was the great leadership by exampe Gov provided, with back up for turn. Real class.
Darling started to work and gained some respect.
Nic showed what effort can achieve - all be it briefly.
Harry is young and should develop. Better than Glass at the same stage.

Negative- constatnt repetituion of the same errors in game plan, structure etc,
Ryan led the way in selfish play and dummy spitting ill-discipline.
Many capitulated mentally very early in the game - the writing was on the wall after 10 minutes.

Cost us nothing and paid next to nothing, Gaff on the other hand is being paid a hell of a lot
I can see why Richmond didn't have a spot on their list for naish . He has some nice attributes in pace and run carry but if he is put under pressure he just turns it over .

Same as I can see why witherden was let go by Brisbane. He one quality attribute his kicking is poor. Yes he has a beautiful kicking action but the amount of turnovers and coach killers is staggering .
Both have the year to improve or they should be delisted

NEGATIVES

  • I feel like if Liam Ryan wasn't, well.. Liam Ryan he'd be a candidate to be dropped after that under normal circumstances. 11 disposals, 1 tackle, 10 Clangers for a whopping 16 ranking points. I feel like his opponent beat him on just about every occasion. Creativity wasn't really there this week unfortunately. When Langdon and Petrucelle are still running around in West Coast colours he's as safe as houses

  • Which brings me to Langdon and Petrucelle. Petrucelle finished with 3 tackles and 800 credits in Simmo's bank after that. Langdon is just... ugh.

  • Pretty sure Smpson said Kelly won't be available next week. How lovely, another injury/covid ravaged season in that blokes contract coming up. Looking forward to him finally having a proper crack at a season for us right when we are sat plumb on the bottom of the ladder and in a rebuild.

  • Gaff had zero score involvements. How you can play as a midfielder all game and not actually be involved in your team scoring is beyond me, but that shouldn't really be surprising given how much we know he actually impacts a game with his disposals.

  • I thought West was rubbish personally. I'm a big fan of the "At least he has a crack" brigade as much as anyone, but West killed us multiple times with his fumbliness and shit disposal. Went at 37.5DE% from his 8 touches. Tip of the cap he led our team in tackles but gee whiz, we need more at this level.

  • Why Simpson lifted the Brayshaw tag is beyond me. Legit one of the few things that was actually working for us, and his reasoning was "We thought we'd try something different". How the hell does that work? Nelson was actually doing a fantastic job and could've hung his hat on doing his role. Why change the one thing that was actually working? It's not like freeing up Nelson meant we suddently have this impactful player who's going to go full offense or anything. How absurd. Maybe if you want to try something different, try kicking goals or sticking a tackle.

POSITIVES

  • Huge Dixon had a crack. I like this bloke. Isn't blessed with huge talent, but i feel like he competes well against better credentialed opposition.

  • Darling actually marked something. Small wins gaiz. Said he couldn't get any worse on last week and hopefully can continue building. 12 disposals, 11 contested, with 4 marks, all contested, 3 tackles and a goal. That's a solid day under normal circumstances. Pity the supply/synergy sucked, but you can't knock his work rate this week.

  • Hurn was pretty good. Possibly our best player actually. Almost fell off my chair when he went short to the left from a kickout. How risky!

  • Probably Naish's worst game for us yet, but i still feel he was a positive. 22 touches, 9 contested with 5 tackles. DE needs a tidy up, but his expensive offsider Gaff had similar stats and cost 10x as much to have on the list.

  • Naitanui was good, and then he wasn't. Hard game to read, i feel like everyone expected more considering Meek is an absolute nobody, but Naitanui's stats aren't awful. 15 touches, 18 contested posessions, 37 hitouts, 7 clearances and a goal. ZERO tackles though. Again.

  • Props to McGovern again. Leadership on show once more. 21 touches, with 18 by foot, 11 marks, 4 contested at a surprising 81%DE

You could write a thesis on what went wrong in that game but in summary;

1) Midfield - in the battle of our second string midfield vs the Dockers second string midfield ours got flogged. Comprehensively outworked, outpossessed and out-smarted. Nothing else really needs to be said. None of those guys are going to make it and its all on our recruiting team who hasn't picked a decent mid in years and coaching.

2) Defence - other than McGovern (who was excellent) and Hurn who was very solid our defence was diabolical. That is a largely intact area personel wise so its a massive concern that it both leaks easy goals and fails to clear the area when in possession. The midfield killed them at times by letting the Dockers enter the 50 under little pressure (and failed to provide targets up the ground) but even so, to leak over 100 points against that rabble is inexcusable.

3) Other - Some of our personnel need to have their papers stamped. Blokes who have been around the system for long enough like Petch, Nelson, Withereden etc who offer nothing even in games like this against poor opposition. Coaching doesn't help, I mean what a masterstroke by Simpson to lift the Nelson tag on Brayshaw which saw him carve us up and Nelson kill us with his own possessions.

Positive:

We have a STREAK, so maybe we'l get a new DVD?
Another negative to add to the list. Club is so rich but putting out DVD’s in the era of Blu-Rays and UHD download links.

Post of the year in my eyes.

As supporters we have been so spoiled by always being around the mark or near enough, always featuring in finals and being within 5 years of a prelim or flag at any given moment. The club has been ravaged by injury and covid, we aren’t going to be competitive until the back half of the year. Until the cattle is back it’s about the depth showing up and displaying their wares for 2023 and beyond.

Props to Gov.
He cops it most weeks (lately anyway) for being so highly paid, but he stood up this game and was one of the only ones to do so.

NN wasn't at his best but he still has massive credits in the bank given how often he's been the difference between wins and losses (especially the last couple years when the team's been deplorable).

It's not just the "Covid"years that people are upset with. The club has been failing to make any meaningful improvements since 2018.

Watching yesterday's game at the ground, you tell me
  • what the game plan is?
  • What's our structure?
  • What are any of the instructions giving to our players?
It looked like a complete mess and it has for the last 5+ seasons.

Fan aren't upset because we are losing, every club has to take its lumps at some point. Fans are upset because NOTHING is changing to show the club is actively addressing fundamental issues.

And as a member that pays a stupid amount of money to the club, you're goddamn right I expect the club to hold the high standards that have been set. Simpson is in his 8th season at the club, it's not like any of us are having a knee-jerk reaction to one bad season.

Under Simpson we've only made it the Preliminary Finals stage twice, and those happen to be the years we made Grand Finals 2015, 2018. Other than that we've made the second round twice which both resulted in losses.

He has a win ratio of 60% granted but if you look deep into it we've underachieved massively even with a premiership in 2018 with Simpson given the players we've had.

NN getting 18 CPs from just 15 touches must be some sort of league record? The bloke is a God amongst men.

Claiming we've been a complete mess for 5+ years (the "plus" is a bit ambiguous, but if it's the Simmo era we're talking a premiership, a GF, 6 straight finals appearances) isn't a knee-jerk reaction to one bad season?

Good post, agree with all of this.

But I was intrigued with the bolded. Im pretty sure there are no FS or academy picks that will compromise this draft so wondering who we will beat this year to finish 14th? North and perhaps Gold Coast are the only teams I see we could possibly leapfrog given we will almost certainly be 0-6 to start the season with a tough draw there after. Both of which have beaten us already. Crows look to be competitive , unlucky not to beat Freo and Hawks and Pies are looking much better than expected. Even with the return of some quality to our ranks later in the season, I cant see us escaping bottom four and surely we must be first or second line of betting for the spoon.

The club really needs to be blown up . Nisbett and his boys club mates and appointments need to be cleaned out and fresh blood moved jnto the club.
Players need to be told their times up. Kennedy and Hurn shouldn’t have been allowed to go on another year. Naitanui should be moved out at the end of this year.. if they want to play on then we can help find a place for them. No player is bigger than the club regardless of what they have done.. we need to explore the list further.. i dont rate Waterman at all but he should be told you have a place in the side all year. If you go well you stay, if not out you go. Same for rotham, nelson, witho, jones.
Simpson needs to be put on notice that there needs to be signs of a new game plan being shown or at the end of the year he will be moved on… it no coincidence the more regulars we play the worse the game plan goes.. every other team has evolved forward and we have gone drastically backwards.
The s and c department needs a full review as to why our injuries got to such a point before a game was even played..

I had us bottom 4, so no real surprises for me. Yes losing sucks and i dislike it as much as the next person, but lack of effort is what pisses me off more. Too many times yesterday players just did not even bother chasing once we turned it over and if they did it was a half assed effort.

If we are going down the rebuild path do it properly, you only have to look at the Dees and Blues have done with a proper rebuild, and how long it takes, plenty of pain for a while, don't do a Geelong rebuild just topping up each year for no real success. Just rip the band aid off now and start the process.
