I just wonder if either the club didn't want him to take the flight to Perth because it's a long way to go, particularly for a tall guy when we're playing interstate for the first real match - or if they just didn't want him roughed up in the NAB for no good reason.

Maybe they couldn't get him an exit row on the sardine can plans now they're flying with Virgin? :p

We got smashed again in the ruck and centre clearances by North who were rucking with Goldstein and Majak Daw. Centre clearances have been a massive problem in 2009 and 2010 after we dominated in that area in 2007 and 2008.

Is there no solution to the ruck and centre clearance problem? Or are we gonna get a good old fashioned rogering every week this season like in the past 2 years? It's like we have been needing to start the majority of our attacks from half back which is no great strength either.

I reckon the rucks and centre clearance work is at the heart of Hawthorn's problems over the last 2 years and today's performance bore ill comfort.

Does anyone remember the creaming we got from Richmond in the centre clearances in our match against them last year? I mean Richmond?
Really?

Massive issue. Hopefully Hale can be a revelation in the ruck this year. Renouf is just a battler at best. Wonder what the chances of fast-tracking Lowden into the side later in the year are? Bailey holds the key to the year in many respects.

It is the big question mark on us being able to win a premiership. To be a threat you need to have a quality big man division and ours is bordering on competitive only at this stage.

yeah we were smashed in the clearances yesterday against a mediocre combination in goldstein and daw, giving norf first use of the ball so efectively we are starting on the back foot. so nothing has changed from the last 2 years we start our attacks of the half back line , not a way to beat a genuine contender .IF OUR RUCKS DONT IMPROVE another 5 to 8 finish again im afraid.

Is this the same Richmond that we smashed just a week ago?

At that was rucking Twister and Grimley.

Yeah, seems like the club has gone in one ruckman short.

From all reports Max was at the game yesterday with quite a big compression bandage on his knee. Doesn't sound like good news to me.

Goldstein is a very promising young ruckman from the same draft as Renouf but a later pick. He is certainly not mediocre, but perhaps you are referring to the combination of he and Daw as mediocre. it was in fact Goldstein's progress as a ruckman in combination with McIntosh (as well as the return from injury of Petrie) that would have prompted North to trade Hale.
I rate Goldstein and would not have been surprised that he outrucked our guys as many posters have reported. Unfortunately I did not see the game so I can't be certain that did happen.
