If he's fit I don't see why he wouldn't.

Hah, it'd be nice if Rayner copped the same treatment instead of being gifted games, should've been dropped many times over the last two years.

That's one way of looking at it. On the flip side I'm pretty happy with how they've played Rayner since he was drafted. CEY is a 27 year old player with quite a few years in the system. Cam is now a third year player who has quickly learned from his errors & looks to be an exciting prospect this year.

There is simply no comparison.

I think this also speaks to just how impressive Robertson has been so far, to oust a guy who we specifically recruited for a role we identified as being deficient in....good to see the coaches backing in this also.

Robertson will be a gun, still amazed we were able to snare him.
He is without a doubt the “next big thing” in the AFL. Imagine ROBERTSON AND RAYNER going NUTS in the same side. Our list is just about a 3-peat list apart from the forward key positions. Get that sorted and we will be unstoppable.

Stephen May has shown the exact way to play Patton. Run off him, intercept and influence contests. He's good at leading and marking, but will be a non-factor around the ground.
Patton’s a big lug. His best football is behind him.

Decided to go with our Round 18 match v North for my 'I can't sleep' viewing. It's easy to forget how good a debut season Answorh had when discussing guys like Rich, Birchall, Witherden and Ah Chee for HBF spots, but jeeze he's a talent. He reads the play very well, isn't afraid to be aggressive when needed and uses the pill at an elite level 79% DE). Short of having a stinker against the Blues, he's a lock for round 1. Of the five players mentioned, he is by far the best small defender among them (purely talking a 1 on 1 sense) and is definitely something our defence needs.

Speaking of defence, Adams played a pretty great game too and probably one I didn't give him enough credit for when discussing him recently. His intercept marking was incredible and also tackled very well. The fact he's come into the 2020 season incredibly fit says to me he'll be a lock come round 1 (if he wasn't already). I'm particularly interested to see how he takes the game on with his increased fitness. He's got great speed and could see him breaking through some tackles in clutch moments this season.

Tell you what though, it's been nice having such a variety of wins to re-watch this off season. Beats the usual 5 a year!

Dont agree with your comment re: "forward key positions". IMO, we have the most exciting Key Forward prospect in the comp with Hippy. The expectation of his performances are way over the top given he's played the key forward since he was 19 1/2 years old with no mature forwards support on the field. He's going to play this whole season as a 22 year old and I can assure you the coaching staff all very much appreciate his improvements from year to year. Maybe accurate with 1 key forward having a cloud over him but only 1 in my opinion.

I don't recall watching any replays since but I was at that North match live last year and IIRC Answerth was a stand out. I've been guilty of forgetting him myself somewhat this pre season but having watched a couple of replays of our wins last year over the past couple weeks I am fully on board the Answerth train again. Deserves a spot in discussions amongst the likes of Clug, Rayner and Berry Imo as one of our best and most exciting young talents. Has similar traits to a young Elliot Yeo.

Hey Mighty Lions. The point I was attempting to make was that if we had our CURRENT best team in all positions bar CHF and FF and we had players equivalent to Lynch at FF and Brownie at CHF in the side we would have a three-peat list. It’s a hypothetical.

It was awful. I hope that Hawks team turn up round 1. Andrews will towel Patton.
I agree about the game error ridden from both teams.
The coaches have 2 weeks to turn things around. Personally i hope the Hawks play as badly in round one.

I know both lots of fans will be saying it's only a trial game.
However these games are different than a few years ago where coaches would run out half a team of kids.
Now it is more like fine tuning your best 22 before round one.

Round 1 for the Lions is a benchmark game for the season.
Playing the Hawks who only finished one game away from being 7th in 2019.
Playing them away at the MCG where our recent record is not good.
Hopefully we come away with the 4 points.

Final practice game done and dusted, my final go at it.

Outs(from final v Giants)- Luke Hodge, Allen Christensen, Nick Robertson.

Ins- Mitch Robinson, Deven Robertson, Brandon Starcevich.

Alex Witherden, Harris Andrews, Noah Answerth.
Daniel Rich, Marcus Adams, Darcy Gardiner.

Stef Martin, Jarryd Lyons, Lachie Neale.
Hugh McCluggage, Jarrod Berry, Mitch Robinson.

Charlie Cameron, Eric Hipwood, Cam Rayner.
Lincoln McCarthy, Daniel McStay, Dayne Zorko.

Oscar McInerney, Zac Bailey, Brandon Starcevich, Deven Robertson.

Maybe they'll go for Birchall over Robertson.

I'm pretty confident about 20 of 22 spots:

FB: - Andrews - Gardiner
HB: Rich - Adams - Witherden
C: McCluggage - Berry - Robinson
HF: Rayner - Hipwood - McCarthy
FF: Zorko - McStay - Cameron
R: Martin - Neale - Lyons

Bailey - Starcevich - Big O

The last 2 spots have to have at least one (if not two) defenders. I think Birchall is pretty certain to be one of the last two spots and I'm between Robertson and Answerth for the last spot. Maybe Answerth given the Hawks might take in a pretty small forward line given injuries.

B Witherden Andrews Gardiner
HB Birchall Adams Rich
C Bailey Lyons Robinson
HF McCarthy Hipwood Zorko
F Cameron McStay Rayner
I Martin Neale McCluggage
I McInerney Berry Starcevich Robertson/Answerth

Ah Chee didn't show enough tonight. Witherden and Birchall were on thin ice but worked their way into the match to earn a chance for Round 1 imo. I think the final bench spot will come down to Robertson or Answerth depending on whether we want an extra mid or defender on the bench. Starcevich should be a lock after tonight.

Stating the obvious, Bailey and Starcevich have made themselves locks for Rd 1. Rayner is a deep forward, don't think he will ever have the wheels to play midfield. Happy for him to be a powerhouse third forward. Any chance he has depth perception issues. Should get his eyes tested

Yep same team for me. Answerth over Robertson. Think we have plenty of guys to run through the middle without him. Rayner, Zorks and Berry for starters with limited minutes to McCarthy, Bailey and even Starc.

Im with you. Standout 23 based on tonight.

Yeah it is a tough one. Robertson probably earned a shot in the seniors based on tonight whilst Answerth didn't quite grab his opportunity. We probably need an extra defender more though and Answerth should have enough credits in the bank from last year to be named in the side. Also worth noting Answerth has had a disrupted pre season so is probably a bit behind all the others in fitness and touch. Robertson earned his spot more than all of Witherden, Birchall and Answerth tonight in my opinion but we need the others in as defenders.

I'd love to see Answerth get a crack on a wing/through the midfield this season and the fact that he has that versatility to play through there in addition to his primary role as a small defender probably gets him the nod for Round 1 and deservedly so.

The only thing I’m certain of is Ah Chee will find himself out. Reckon Birchall plays round 1, given we play Hawthorn; save for a couple of errors early on he was solid tonight. We also didn’t recruit him with the intent of him playing in the 2’s. Robertson showed enough to warrant a round 1 debut but at the expense of who is the question - Answerth on face value but nowhere near like for like. Geez different than 5-6 years ago when some players were pretty much gifted games.

Just came here to post that exact same team. Reckon that's about where our best 22 should sit, and we can rotate bails through at half back if we need an extra defender there. With that said I suspect we'll probably only end up with 2 of Noah, Dev and starc with birch filling out the squad

Funny you should say that.

Someone who knows a bit about the game asked me does he wear contacts or not because the way he goes for the ball sometimes indicates he has a problem picking the trajectory up. And seems to lunge at it at the last moment.

Probably ridiculous but there's something not quite right.

My Round 1 team:

Answorth Adams Gardiner
Birchall Andrews Rich
Robinson Neale Bailey
Martin Lyons McCluggage
Zorko McStay Rayner
Cameron Hipwood McCarthy

Int: Witherden Berry Starcevich McInerney

I couldn't agree more
Answerth had a great debut year and is lock in 18.
Starcevich & Bailey also
Witherden is the one for me who has to go as his defensive chops are still not up to scratch.
People have short memories and Witherden was found wanting in crucial contests in the finals last year especially the last one.
Still doesn't offer much more than a good kick.
One on one defensively specifically physical contests gets beat 8 out of 10 times.
Another average year without progression puts his retention under real scrutiny.
