I'm thinking this will be our team r1. There's two spots up for grabs in my opinion - 2nd winger and last spot on the bench. Those spots will be filled by two of Pickett, Aarts, Ross & Ralphsmith. I'd go Pickett and Ralphsmith personally but I have a feeling it'll be Aarts and Ross.

Fb: Broad, Grimes, Gibcus
Hb: Short, Tarrant, Vlastuin
C: Kmac, Prestia, XXXX
Hf: Baker, Balta, Edwards
Ff: Riewoldt, Lynch, Castagna
R: Nankervis, Dusty, Bolton
I: Graham, Cotchin, Rioli, Soldo

Edit: Forgot Soldo :drunk: so 1 spot left between Aarts, Ross, Pickett and Ralphsmith.

Graham? Hasn't played 5 minutes much less joined full training.

Yeah he's questionable but Burge said he's still been able to do alot of conditioning so if he can get two more weeks of skills training in I reckon he'll play.
Even still he would have no touch not an easy side to fit into with only Lambert missing given he has missed a good chunk of preseason with about 3 or 4 different complaints. Silly to rush him back.

After the praccy im thinking this is the lineup for r1.

Fb: Broad, Grimes, Gibcus
Hb: Short, Tarrant, Vlastuin
C: Kmac, Prestia, Ralphsmith
Hf: Baker, Balta, Edwards
Ff: Riewoldt, Lynch, Castagna
R: Nankervis, Dusty, Bolton
I: Graham, Cotchin, Rioli, Soldo

Ross in for Graham if he doesn't get up.
It's a bloody strong team on paper.

Selected R1.

B: -Vlastuin - Tarrant - Broad
HB: Rioli ----- Grimes - Short
C: -KMac ---- Prestia - Ralphsmith
HF: Bolton --- Lynch -- Baker
FF: George - Riewoldt - Balta
R: -Nank ---- Martin -- Cotchin

I: -Ross - Edwards - Gibcus - Soldo - SUB: Pickett
EMG: Stack, Dow, Miller

Carlton's Fwdline is pretty small (No need for Miller) it was actually their small fwds that caused Melbourne all the grief. Rioli's Pre-season has sucked and to be honest I rather Pickett play wing, Ralphsmith at HB and Rioli be the sub but thats not going to happen.

No way graham is playing round 1
Looks like Jack Ross will have his spot for now

On what I've seen so far - including first hand evidence today - there's no way Rioli should be playing round one.

Unfortunately, he seems to be the coach's pet so it is what it is.

Ralphsmith would be incredibly unlucky not to be playing against the abominables.

3 tall marking forwards will make or break us this year. Putting aside injuries of course.

That will be a key differentiator for us against most other teams. All are good marks and good movers who can cover the ground pretty well.

Our backline is good. Other teams have good backs so nothing stands out on this front. Note that if Rioli continues on from last year in that running hbf role, we will be improved.

Our mids are solid. Martin and Bolton are very good and genuine match winners as they roll forward. The key for us in the mids is Cotchin and Prestia. If they're not on the park, we are in trouble. We are seriously exposed. A lot has been said on here about RCD, Ross etc but I just can't see the depth myself.

So our key imo to a gun year is the 3 key forwards gameplan. Obviously for it to succeed, it will need:
  • Supply
  • Marks being taken
  • Smalls applying plenty of pressure and kicking goals. Those smalls will be critical in providing pressure and run to cover the big boys. Baker will be key for us in the forward line this year. Edwards will also benefit from playing off the big boys (who likely won't be out marked and hence ball will spoil to the ground). His smarts may be a standout for us.

Note: I think Nank and Soldo can work well together. Obviously they play differently but if they're taking marks, we will have plenty of run around them.

Three forwards hasn't worked for us previously, but two of them were Vickery & Griffiths. Interesting to see how it works this year.
My main question is who is the best replacement for the Lambert role? If it's Aarts or Castagna - then they are in the team.

My round 1 team. Rioli will likely be in the real one, but he shouldn't IMO

B: Gibcus, Tarrant, Grimes
HB: Short, Broad, Vlastuin
C: McIntosh, Prestia, Ralphsmith
HF: Baker, Castagna, Edwards
F: Riewoldt, Lynch, Balta
Foll: Nankervis, Martin, Cotchin

Int: Soldo, Bolton, Mansell, Ross

EMG: Rioli, Pickett, Aarts, Brown

When Graham's back, he replaces Ross. When Lambert's back, he replaces Ralphsmith/Mansell

Seems like Baker is the Lambert replacement to me

Ralphsmith should be round one a inclusion and well before some others I think.

He is still learning but he is growing before our eyes and better than a number of others at the level in terms of impact and contribution.

Playing in the ones will only improve him and help us be a better team especially at the pointy end. He covers the ground well, disposal is good and he has more upside the most so well worth the investment

This is what I’d like the round one team to look like excluding Graham and Lambert who would be selected if fit.

FB:Grimes Tarrant Short

CHB: Vlastuin Broad Ralphsmith

C:McIntosh Prestia Ross

CHF:Edwards Balta Bolton

FF:Baker Lynch Riewoldt

Ruck:Nankervis Martin Cotchin

Bench: Soldo Rioli Gibcus Castagna

EMG: Pickett, Stack, Sonsie, Nyoun

I'm assuming that Vlastuin will be the only absentee from yesterday who will play Rd 1, so with that in mind;

B: Grimes Tarrant Vlastuin
HB: Short Broad Gibcus
C: Ralphsmith Cotchin McIntosh
HF: Edwards Lynch Balta
F: Baker Riewoldt Bolton
Foll: Nankervis Martin Prestia
I/C: Soldo Ross Castagna Rioli

Personally, I don't think Rioli's form warrants selection, as I would much prefer Mansell in the side but I'm not optimistic.

I can see the sub being one of Caddy, Pickett or Collier-Dawkins.

On Rioli, is it possible that he could make a return to the forward line now? It was the game plan that killed off our small forwards last year more than anything. Oppo were getting too many intercept marks leaving no chance for them to crumb and impact the game offensively.

Now we've changed things up with our tall forward line not allowing easy oppo intercept marks, blokes like Bakes, Bolton and Shedda are feasting on the crumbs.

Surely this is an environment that Rioli would thrive in, playing his natural game up forward with renewed offensive freedom?

Best 22 (+1)

Tarrant. Grimes. Gibcus.
Short. Broad. Vlastuin.
McIntosh. Cotchin. Edwards.
Lambert. Lynch. Balta.
Baker. Riewoldt. Bolton.
Nankervis. Martin. Prestia.

Soldo. George. Graham. Rioli.

# Pickett.

Graham and lambert sound cooked. Not sure of vlastuin. Pickett either dropped or not fit.

Would expect ralphsmith. Ross. Aarts etc. Next in line.

Round 1 guess -

Tarrant. Grimes. Gibcus.
Short. Broad. Vlastuin?
McIntosh. Cotchin. Edwards.
(Ralphsmith) . Lynch. Balta.
Baker. Riewoldt. Bolton.
Nankervis. Martin. Prestia.

Soldo. George. (Ross). Rioli.

# Pickett.

I was wondering the same thing earlier. It's good to have options.

Unfortunately, he seems to be the coach's pet so it is what it is.

Only getting a 1yr contract extension would suggest that although we all know Dimma loves Daniel, he's on thin ice and really needs to perform this year.

Time to unleash the Three Headed Monster

👹👹👹 Lol

****ing finally, I thought I'd never live to see the golden rebirth of 'Terry's Triangle!' ;)

Love my teams being filled with pace where possible

I've chosen to give Vlastuin an extra week, Stack comes in for him

Pickett in for Aarts

B: Grimes Tarrant Gibcus
HB: Short Broad Stack
C: Bolton Prestia Pickett
HF: Baker Riewoldt Edwards
FF: Balta Lynch Castagna
FOLL: Nank Cotchin Martin
INT: Kmac Ralphsmith Rioli Soldo
Medical Sub: Ross

... just on that 3 headed monster, thought the starting 6 fwds looked like a great combo: Jack, Lynch, Balta, Baker, Bolton and Shedda. Will be round 1 starting fwd line.

Looking forward to seeing Cumberland breaking into the fwd line, as the season plays out, for that 7th fwd spot.
