I think you might find McEvoy, Hale and maybe even Ceglar when he played all had better stats ( hit outs to advantage, marks, disposals, goals) than Grunds last year. Hawthorn certainly had a far better centre clearance differential than we did.

I thought McEvoy was a joke last year. But i do remember seeing Ceglar and wondering if we made a mistake letting him go.

I guess probably what I'd like to see is a higher percentage of effective 1 on 1 tackles.

We are a high pressure team that tackles relentlessly, but often it will take three or more attempts before an "effective" tackle is made. This leads to our players being behind the play and others having to leave their man to cover after the missed tackle.

Quite often two or more players would zone off their opponent and commit to a tackle when it was unnecessary. It looked so poor from the stands and even worse on TV - like it was scripted sometimes. You could see what was coming and there was nothing anyone could do to stop it.

I loved watching Melbournes' Angus Brayshaw. The kid has a real appetite for tackling and excellent technique. JDG also showed admirable intensity but his technique needs improving and he doesn't yet have the size.

*We lack crumbing forwards.
*We lack quality disposal and link up out of defense.
*We lack a physically developed ready to go second gun KPF - Moore isn't there yet.

Can't think of much else, we also need Reid and Brown to stay fit, very important.

What we had in 2010 and don't have now are
1. The super confident attacking half backs (O'Brien and Shaw that attacked as soon as they got the ball, assuming they would beat their opponents.)
2. A super skillful half forward (Didak)
3. A mature confident and at times dominant ruck (Jolley) that enabled us to play an extra mobile big forward.
These lacks are weaknesses, but the players we have could well enable us to cover them all (but playing differently to use the strengths of the players we have.)
Also missing the hardest worker in the league (Thomas) and a Brownlow medalist in his prime Swan.

Neither will be Jolly 2010 in 2016.

No but they will be Jolly 2010 for longer. Jolly 2010 only lasted two years, these guys could go for 7 or 8.

In 2016 they could be Max Bailey 2013 though. I don't expect us to win the flag this year but the rucks won't be the reason for that. They'll be competitive all season.

Now now, don't confuse TG with sound points.

I think our premiership window is open. More to the fact, I think we are 1 year off from seriously contending a premiership. Another year into Taylor Adams, De Goey, Darcey Moore, Treloar, Elliot, Marsh, Scharenberg returns etc..

For us to contend, we need dominance in the ruck. First use of the ball, a ruck who can drift forward, strong overhead mark and kick goals. A good ruck combination. Jolly and Leigh Brown.

Now to my question, do you think Witts and/or Grundy are able to fulfill their roles to help us contend next year?
I think our two biggest weaknesses are about to turn into strengths. They are leadership and experience. I'm not having a shot at Pendles here - I think he is a superstar captain but he can't do it on his own. I re-read Taylor Adams article today and he cited how big a hole Maxy and Bally had left once they retired. If you look at our last two seasons, we have dropped off dramatically in terms of W/L after Round 12. That can be put down a bit to the vagaries of the draw however I think in many of those games we just lacked enough experience and leaders on the ground with cool heads to keep things in check and keep the intensity up and then go through our opposition. There is no question we have the talent particularly through the mid field and in transition - we are also a great contested footy team. Hopefully in 2016 we will go back to the side that had multiple goalkickers which Cloke could play the KPF that provided the contest to keep the ball in our forward 50 from where we suffocated teams. Starting to get excited for Round 1.
