Opinion Paddy Dow, can you see a pathway for him to break into our best 22 or are we resigned to losing him?

What are Dow's chances of breaking into the best 22?

I havent given up on him - he is one injury to Cripps or Kennedy and he'll be playing each week and you never know, he gets a block of games he may show what he is made of. He played some reasonable football last year for about a month and then dropped off again (along with the whole side)

If i was him and i was sitting in the VFL for the rest of the year id be looking to go elsewhere, be crazy not to.

Paddy Dow isn't small, size wise, compared to the average mid in the competition.

If Dow is contracted for next year, then the only way he gets traded is if he asks for one.
He's an extremely important player for the VFL side and very handy depth for the seniors. Doesn't matter whether he's 1st, 2nd or 3rd in line for a call up.
We all know his limitations and strengths. He's midfield or bust and his point of difference is his burst speed from stoppages. Problem is, his POD has been lessened this year with the addition of Cerra. Add Hewett who runs both ways, and Cripps and Kennedy now also have more pace and mobility compared to the last few years, plus we obviously have Walsh who went straight past him and can do it all. He can't be blamed for all of that, but it's combined to deprive him of the chances we would have expected him to get before all this happened.

The fact that it's taken him this long to dominate VFL games week in, week out may just mean that he's one of those slow burn players that takes a bit longer for it all to click.

Walsh looks like a beast compared to Dow who has been in the system longer.

He was a decent player in an awful Pioneers team.

Playing in by far the worst team in the TAC Cup that year probably made him stand out more than he would have in a much better team.

We drafted 2 players from that wooden spoon team.

Three. Dow, LOB and Schumacher.
And it's not like we've had great coaching the last 3 years
Coaching didn't help, but a player like that should have been dominating VFL much earlier IMO. Especially with his early exposure to AFL level. Pick 3 who debuted round 1 and played 20 games in his first year, averaging decent numbers. Should have been tearing the VFL apart on a regular basis.

Too much should.
Sometimes it takes time, especially when there isn't good coaching and support. Kennedy is a great example at our club. Darcy Parish would be another.

I think Paddy is playing his best football this year. Which means he is still improving. Delist or trade at our peril. I see no value in the move. He’s apparently not wanting to leave. He would be low value trade wise. He’s contracted for next year. A little more improvement and he’s right there for mine.

Keep. Persist.

They’ve stamped his papers.
What a waste …
He’s midfield game this year has gone to almost simply winning the ball and hand balling straight off to an opponent, gone is some of the creativity of stepping around & weaving through in/out of player congestion displayed up until now…

Not anywhere as much run overlap or taking the opposition on anymore which should have been an important part in strengthening this part of his offensive game & development as well imo…

He’s almost a little safe & robotic at times, lost the mindset to taking it on…

Good point. Now that I think about it he hasnt been doing those runs like he used to in the early days. I assume the instruction is for him to extract and pass out to runners like walsh and cerra.

Obviously the coaches are working with him to improve on a few aspects of his game, obvious few we know all about…

I does look like the way he is playing as more of a inside extractor this year seems to be by instructions from the coaching group, just seems to have taken away from some of his offensive attributes…

He’s had a really good consistent year in the reserves so far, looks to have improved the tank/endurance but on the other hand hasn’t got the chasing/rundown efforts to the level required yet…

Dow is getting a heavy tag every week so is not getting as much space as he has in the past. He has been kicking goals every week and had 3 shots on the weekend that he was unlucky to only come up with 1.

Unless he gets a sustained go in the 1s we won't know whether he can make it. He is not going to learn much more playing 2s
