Opinion Paddy Dow, can you see a pathway for him to break into our best 22 or are we resigned to losing him?

What are Dow's chances of breaking into the best 22?

Been in Dow’s corner the whole way.
Pretty clear now that he’s not in the MC plans.
Apparently contracted for next year but if he’s not traded, he’d have to have the biggest summer’s training of all time !!
We managed to turn SPS into Young and it’s looking likely Austin will have to get creative again at seasons end …

I hope MC try something different with Dow in the second half of the season. It seems pointless sending him back to the VFL to play as a midfielder.
Where would you suggest he be played ? His problem is he is mid-field or bust , cant play another position.

Can’t play wing won’t run both ways.

Can’t play back has no defensive skills.

Unfortunately isn’t part of our midfield structure.

Gone.

I dont disagree with your analysis here but why do you think he got a 12 month contract extension ?

After his first few games thought we had found a goodun…. What has happened to him from there has been perplexing to say the least.

If he was worth his chop at the club would have been breathing fire and brimstone against the filth but barely fired a shot.

I think Voss doesn’t rate him as he is not in any way shape or form a midfielder in his mold.

I think a new club will do him good but just don’t see he will ever justify his pick 3 status.

Disappointed beyond belief with him. He and a few other past few recruitments just show that talent only takes you so far …. competitive drive and a hard edge take you a lot further add talent and you have Sam Walsh or a Cripps.

Seen it time and time again junior players who carve it up in the junior ranks based on talent alone and then think AFL will be no different. Yet these fools throw away something they have been aspiring to their whole lives, and the rest of us die hards would give a lefty to put on the jumper and they just piss it up a wall.

The worse thing is 5 years after their AFL career is over (prematurely because they coasted on talent), when they are in the real world like the rest of us they go to bed every night wishing what could have been. Such a waste.

Dow seems like a nice kid, would hate to see this happen to him …. pull your finger out son ….. DO!

I have been a Dow fan since his first game. There was something and I have kept on waiting for it to materialize into a genuine player.
Right now I am wondering if it was just that we had nothing at the time and a slight bit of something was all it took to get excited. To be honest we havent seen it since.
Its a real shame but being dropped summarily you have to wonder if thats it for Paddy.

And to think THAT draft a guy by the name of Aaron Naughton was available. That’s what hurts.High pick.Massive bust.

Harry-Charlie-Naughton=Premiership.

That’s the difference.

Yes is the main knock I have on our drafting and footscray game plan -- he is an all Australian CHB --was the best performed key position of his year by a long way .. Maybe SOS fell to the
Jungle drums of cripps need help ..

I think you can only consider it a drafting mistake if the player was in contention to be picked where we selected. Dow over Cerra and LDU was a clear mistake because it was a lineball decision between them. Plenty of clubs would have picked both over Dow so they were realistic alternatives. Naughton was never going top 3 in that draft so can't really fault SOS for not picking him.

St Kilda or Collingwood probably should have taken naughton ahead of their picks though.

Maybe .. but I always values talls that will be hit no miss -- he was never goi g to be a miss .. we were so lucky Harry and Charlie fell with the cards .. Naughton was always a safe bet .. But I understand doubling down following SPS and Fish who couldn't make an impact we went heavy in the middle .. swings and roundabouts

There’s a bit of that, re excited to see someone show something.

He’s basically only got burst speed from stoppage which is eye catching, and ok at stoppages, but is pretty much below average or worse at everything else.

I’m not even sure if he has the football IQ either as he doesn’t really get involved in chains of possession around the ground.

Been waiting for him to grow into a man but he still looks and feels like a boy out there. Anyone know what I mean?

Yes. Is definitely bigger than he used to be but still got pushed off the ball quite easily. Agree still looks more boy than man and he's had 5 years in the system.

Just look at Cerra for comparison.

Curious to know if he was like this in juniors? He was widely tipped to be taken in the top 5 so it's not like we reached.

As you say, he's got 1 exciting part to his game...and nothing else. And he hasn't shown anything else in his entire AFL career to be truthful.

Isn't a strong 2 way runner, isn't a defensive tackling machine, isn't a good overhead mark, isn't a great kick, doesn't have great footy IQ, can't play any other positions..

In hindsight, with so many weaknesses in his game it's surprising that he was rated at pick #3. I guess recruiters saw a lot of 'upside' that never really eventuated.

This is why imo Richmond do it best. They recruit on a players mental fortitude and drive as a priority along with talent.
Happy to take a player less talented but more driven

That is what we should be doing …. All the talent in the world without drive is just wasted talent in the AFL.

Was a weak draft and only a few of the top 20 I would say have reached their mark.
Brayshaw and Cerra maybe the most consistent so far - both considered dare I say a bit vanilla. Going to be 200-game mids.
Naughton was raw - great pick by WB.
Dow had elite traits - the burst from stoppage - but like many others in that draft the potential exceeds the output at this point.
The most interesting part of the debate is that he’s contracted for next year. If we do trade, we are much better positioned than in the SPS situation to ask for a decent pick. I think there’s a good chance he will still be on our list next year.

My post was not a flag for anyone to get personal or player bash. Leave the obvious bias out of it mate.

He needs to add size to the upper body and build his tank to run out games better as well. Tough doing both at the same time.
