PAFC NEWS Facebook page has come up with a best 22 Port AFL side plus captain and coach.

Anyone that played from 1997 to 2016 is eligible and some players were picked on potential.

IMO some were picked out of position, too.

What do you think?

Look at that Ruck line. 6 knee reco's among them.

People whinge about not winning enough flags in the 2001-04 period. What would have we achieved if Primus Franco and Wilbur and others only had 1 knee reco.

Nope it's correct.

Lade was the superior ruckman and gave greater/longer service.

Smarter, more athletic, better kick (field and shot), and he overcame two broken legs that threatened to render him the next Sam Bowie.

Primus bullied a few fading and undersized rucks for a couple of years. Overrated.

Lade was a better footballer. I remember when Primus did his knee in 1999 I said to D_One that it was OK because we had Lade who was a better player.

But Lade didn't have Primus' leadership qualities. Primus lead when Waganeen couldn't or wouldn't. He had a rule changed and rule interpretation changed because he was so dominate in his position that he made the AFL umpiring department piss their pants. Lade couldn't do that. And he beat a shit load more than than a few under sized ruckmen who were fading as you wrote. Beating plenty of other all Oz ruckman older than him, same age and yes younger who were more athletic than him.

Anyway Lade was a better forward than Primus and spent more time there.

Likey like. Would argue Boak over Carr. How good is our back 3 of Wanganeen, Wakelin and Wilson. Drool

No Brent Montgomery? Has a B&F and an AA to his name. Would've thought he'd knock out Mead or Dew.

Yea I'd have had Monty and shift P Burger to HF.

Had a crack at it myself....must say mine differs somewhat from the one in the opening post...

FB Michael Pettigrew, Paul Geister, Peter Walsh

HB Darren Pfeiffer, Troy Chaplin, Marlon Motlop

C Jimmy Toumpas, Aaron Shattock, Nathan Lonie

HF Paul Koulouritis, Cameron Cloke, Matthew Westhoff

FF Simon Phillips, John Butcher, Wade Thompson

R Brent Renouf, Steven Salopek, John Rombotis

Int Adam Morgan, Allan Murray, Cam Hitchcock, Ian Downsborough

Cassisi not in my side.

P Burgoyne on the ball (our best ever mid IMO).

If it is about the player (potential ) and not the career I'd be trying to find a spot for Bowen Lockwood...

Dom was great for us during 09-12

This. He had the misfortune of enjoying his prime during the lowest ebb in the club's history, but was quite underrated all things considered.

Between 2007-2011 averaged 20+ disposals and a stack of tackles, won a Showdown Medal and was Best Team Man a bunch of times.

It's a shame we couldn't have had prime Dom in 2013-14, would've been an invaluable compliment - tirelessly combative - to Boak, Wines and Gray instead of running on fumes and getting picked on reputation only. If he'd just been able to stave off the ravages of Father Time for 12-24 months he'd have been one of the first picked for that Prelim against the Hawks.

Obviously we all loved Byron Pickett and the way he went about it, and the Norm Smith just caps his legend off. But did he really do enough for Port at AFL level to make this team? 55 games across 3 seasons going at 11.47 disposals per game/1.4 goals per game. By comparison Angus Monfries has played 60 games across 3 seasons (effectively) going at 15.27 disposals per game/1.38 goals per game and he wouldn't be anywhere near the discussion.
