I'm not about to cast a vote one way or the other as the guy hasn't coached at AFL level so none of us can accurately predict whether he'll be successful.

The only thing I'm not happy about is that if we are going to go with a "non-Essendon" man and a first time AFL coach, I would like them to have some proven experience in - and building - a successful culture. Does Knights know what the culture, environment and expectations need to be like to win a premiership? He sure didn't experience a successful team culture at Richmond.

BTW, does anyone know why Gary O'Donnell was never mentioned as a possibility or (as far as I know) even express interest?

Peter Sumich

I saw in another post someone mentioned that Sumich has rejected our offer as Senior assistant coach...?? Is this correct - haven't seen it in any other media???

Talking to someone in the know today said Hardwick may know a lot about tactics but was not ready to be a senior coach in other aspects...

Since you posted this in two threads I'm guessing you are keen for a response:p. In what other aspects was he not ready?

Unfortunately, you've also missed an even more important point.

Namely, that those in charge of this process stated from the beginning that they were very firmly focused on hiring someone who had been involved in a successful club or been exposed to a club with success.

Knights has been involved at a successful club. Essendon.

When I heard of the appointment I was shocked. Was listening on the radio. Thought gee hope we get Judd to cover this. (And I don't want Judd.) Ironically mused about 1995 and Gary O'Donnnel, that sort of thing.

Then heard his press conference on the radio later on and unexpectedly his voice went straight into my heart when he spoke about the club. Staight away decided he was the one to follow Sheedy.

Can only wait and see what happens from here. The only possible criticism of all that has happened is that Voss caused the timing of the Sheedy annoucement. That could have waited another two weeks.

However the club was bereft of experience at how to move on into a post Sheedy era. They knew they had do and for better or worse blazed into action when a fight for the services of Voss looked liked ensuing.

After that, got no problem with what has happened what so ever.

As long as Gary O'donnel is nowhere near the midfield i will be happy.

can i ask why you believe in this?

Personally gary o'donell was our midfield general in his playing days, he had the tactics and nous on telling what plays to set up and where the plyers should position themselves which is why he was made captain. It also didnt go un-noticed by leigh matthews who had grea admiration for him, hence why he got him to brisbane, where he was assistant coach to one of the greatest midfields in the past 50 years.

I admit Knights wasn't my first choice, but I have come to realise it is a very good decision by the board.

Matthew Knights has my full support.:thumbsu:

Thats pretty much my thinking also. Bomber supporters should instantly get behind as they do with players who are first drafted, its the same thing. We get behind our boys and give them our full support.

I already answered that above

He has been in charge of our midfield.

They are lazy, sloppy and have no accountability.

Too many stupid people to correct on BigFooty these days, I'm just about over it.

I don't care if Knights only played for Richmond, or coached poor lists in the VFL and SANFL.

Success DOES NOT always breed success and vice versa.

He could either be a very good senior AFL coach or just another average one, who know's? NOBODY.

Everyone get behind him and hopefully we made the right choice.

Very true, I can't seem to remember Roos ever winning a Premiership, his record isn't too bad and was appointed from within the club.

Think the criticism has been of the board initially saying they want a high profile winning culture coach. (Read we'll replace 59 year old Sheedy with 32 year old Sheedy.)

I think the board would admit that they found that wasn't necessarily what they were looking for after they got started on the project. They had no experience at replacing a coach of 27 year standing, just knew they it had to be done, and said that.

Once due diligence entered the process of selecting a coach, they came to realize high profile winning culture was superficial.

Due diligence ended up with a low profile Matthew Knights. How many clubs have had a captain and a coach with the same christian name? (joke)

How long before Richmond starts a "get Knights back to Richmond" campaign?

I like it.

Agree entirely.

Take a look at the one successful team and era that has produced many coaches: Hawthorn in the eighties.

Schwab, Judge, Eade, Wallace, (Peter) Knights, Buckernara, Ayres, and I'm sure there are more.. some have had their moments but there not exactly the worlds great collective of coaches.

The only Hawthorn 80s player who has gone on to experience ultmimate success as a coach is Leigh Matthews.

A good playing list suprisingly enough makes a good coach. Funny that.

agreed.... Coaches are overrated.

But Knights' defining moment will be when (and hopefully If ) he Tells a club stalwart in Mark Bolton to retire gracefully....

he has to make the HARD decisions at the club...and That is one of the first
