Hi all (I come in peace,,,)

I've noticed a lot of talk on the Richmond pages about Pat Vezpremi as a potential trade (I understand he is currently under contract...) and I just wanted to get an honest opinion on where people see him at...

Not meaning to stir up anything - just thought i'd get a realistic appraisal of his first two/three years on here...

Also - If you were to trade him, what would people feel acceptable? Pick 11 in 2008... What's his value three years later?

Thanks in avance!

Hi there Tigers84.

To the best of my knowledge, Vezpremi has had various injury and fitness concerns over the past few years. If he stays injury-free I'd imagine/hope that he'd get a game some time this year. There really hasn't been that much opportunity to evaluate his ability in the top level.

As far as a trade goes, I don't see it happening, unless Vez desperately wants out. As you say, he was a high draft pick, and we haven't even had a chance to see how he performs at the top level yet. Also, given our fairly depleted stocks when it comes to forwards, Vez is not really a player I'd be comfortable losing, certainly not for draft picks in this coming draft.

We'd need a player, and I can't see a trade that would be acceptable to both parties. The only way I think it could work is if Roos (if it is even him who would make this call) has spotted someone who isn't getting regular playing time at Richmond, who he likes the look of. But I don't know that much about Richmond players outside the main group.

As much as all Sydney fans want Vez to be a cult star, the reality is that he hasn't come on as thought. There's been plenty of speculation as to why this has happened, but nothing conclusive. The real story lies in the inner sanctum of the club and will probably stay there. My guess is that if he's not doing what he's being asked to do by the match committee, he'll be traded. My wild wild guess would be anything between pick 30 - 50.

I don't know how accurate this is but word around Melbourne is that he is homesick and not coping too well with life in Sydney.

Because he's had injury problems and is not getting Seniors time? I'm sure that has an effect on it. I would love to see him fight through the adversity though and come out on top for the Bloods. If that's not his will then It will show in his attitude around the Club and I'd be surprised if he gets a game at all if this is the case. Purely hypothetical of course.

Pat's more than happy in Sydney. Not homesick at all. He has a girlfriend in Sydney and Cartlon tried very hard to lure him last year but he was not interested.

Those posters that know me know I am reliable. This information is pretty accurate. If you want to evaluate my sources then PM me and I'll tell you and you can evaluate its credibility for yourself. It's not 100% because its 2nd hand, but I'm confident it is close to the mark.

Pat however is extremely frustrated. He has been told by his coach to play as a small forward and kick goals. This he has been doing with ease in the 2nd's. However, you can't evaluate his form based on games at this level because the competition is hopeless. But he frequently is kicking 5 or so goals and racking up the stats.

Those who know him have told me that he has never been fitter. He perhaps had work-rate problems when he came to the club, but now he does extra sessions.

He had some injury concerns pre-season...but now is over them and is in tip top form.

However he is very frustrated guys like Rohan, Jetta and Campbell are playing with Sydney and not contributing much in terms of the scoreboard...yet still have a spot.

McGlynn pushed him out a bit, as did Hanneberry. Poor Pat is in total disillusion as to why he is not getting a game. The coaches are very keen on him, but he is extremely frustrated. His form warrants a game.

He is not going to leave Sydney. He knows the side is ageing and Kirk and Hall who were the big earners have left. Guys like Bolton and O'Keefe are a closing in. Pat knows at Sydney he has the potential to be one of the highest earners. If he went to Carlton or Richmond, he'd have too much competition with high draft picks for the big contract.

And contrary to what is said above...he likes Sydney. He would not leave because it would mean leaving his girlfriend.

He definitely deserves a game. He can play any position the coach wants. He has shown small signs at AFL level as well.

Currie is the other one. This guy deserved to be in over Mike Pyke. His form is ridiculous but has been excluded.

Dave

Thanks for sharing that with us. It is most Sydney fans' worst fear that our most talented young players will choose to go back home and it is heartening to hear that this isn't the case (for Vez anyway). I remember the first time I saw him play in RWO - in the pre-season scratch match against the Rams outside the front of the SCG - and he oozed class, despite having had a limited pre-season.

I haven't seen him for the last month because we haven't had a reserves game in Sydney for that time. A month ago, though, he looked like he was physically labouring. He looked to be working hard enough, but didn't seem to be able to bend down with ease, and also looked like his breathing was laboured. And that is despite looking trimmer and more toned than in previous seasons.

So from the outside view, it certainly seems like he might be physically restricted in some way.

Really hope he can find his way into the team because he certainly has loads to offer.

(Also agree with you on Currie BTW, though can't really fault what Pyke has delivered to the senior team in the last couple of weeks.)

fitness was no doubt his issue. He was a bit too big and didn't have the biggest motor. He suffered a number of annoying injuries as well.

But from what I hear, he is over all those now and he is dominating the 2nd's. He has trimmed down so much. He was never in contention early in the year because his pre-season was interrupted. But he's been fully fit for months now.

I understand Roos wanting to get games into Rohan and Jetta and Campbell...but they are not scoring many goals, and that's what Vez is doing at the moment.

Surely he gets an opportunity.

There is obviously something holding the coaches back. Perhaps they want him even fitter, perhaps they are protecting him for the 2nd half of the year, perhaps they are giving him time to adjust to his new role which is a defensive forward/goal-sneak as opposed to the lead-up forward role he was getting groomed in last year. Perhaps they just don't rate him. Whatever it is, it is unknown to Pat. Coaches are asking him to do things...he is doing them all.

But the good news for Sydney fans is that it is not an issue of him wanting to go home. If he leaves, its due to lack of opportunity...not homesickness.

At the start of the year when everyone was up and running and it became clear that senior spots were going to be hard to come by, Roos specifically mentioned a couple of players he wanted to get into the team because of their talent level. One was Vez (think the other was Hanners). So unless something has changed, they recognise the talent is there.

Disappointing if he doesn't understand what he needs to do to win a spot. Maybe they are just intent on making him work ultra hard to earn it.

Everyone, possibly aside from AG, is really keen to see Vez play in the seniors as from even the small glimpses we have seen of him in the 1's, we can all see he is loads of talent and is a smart player.

I cannot wait to see Vez, Rohan, Jetta, Hanners, Jack, Bird, Jesse all up and running in the same team at the same time.

Haha. Just not a fan of guys who go nuts after kicking a goal. He reminds me of Ballantyne who is probably the most irritating player in the league. Part of me wants to see him play because he obviously has talent but I doubt he'll ever be one of favourites. Sometimes you just don't take to players. I wasn't a fan of Moore before this season though but he looked good in a few games before he was injured, so I might start to like him.

Didn't the coaching staff have trouble finding his best position? Played some games in defence last year? Rohan is a utility type, Jetta is a winger so I don't think those two are taking Vez's spot if the coaching staff see him as a small forward.

Thanks for the info Dave.

I can understand that Vez if fit should have been given a crack but in all honesty, no one is really kicking goals. Gaz kicked one in each of his first three games, Jetta well fair enough, Cambo you wouldn't expect any from him. The team as a whole is not putting many through the big sticks and form from Ressies isn't that great. It doesn't always translate. Otherwise MOD would have racked up 40 or 50 possies last week. I can understand him being frustrated but that's the game. You keep your head down and bust your arse. If he is good enough to be picked they'll pick him. If guys like MOD and Bevan fail to contribute, guys like Jetta and Rohan drop off or there are more injuries then if he needs to stake a massive claim and show the team what his commitment is like.

He's played 6 games in '08 and 4 in '09 and averaged 10 disposals, 1+ goals and 1+ behinds and just under 2 tackles. He's 21, he's had a few injury issues and overall has been inconsistent. He just needs to keep doing the right things. If you're that good, it's hard for Coaches to ignore that.

Yeh he has that sort of brashness/arrogance about him. Hopefully he understands that quality doesn't endear himself to the coaches all that much.

I really hope he gets rewarded soon for his good form so he doesn't get too frustrated.

Not saying i disagree with Bird coming back in at all cause i think he is quite crucial to our teams fortunes over the next 2 years in particular and thus needs to be in as much as possible, but Vez and co. in the 2's must be scratching their heads a bit that he gets to come in straight away but others are slaving away in the 2's and not getting rewarded.

I would have thought with McGlynn and Moore out it would have been perfect for Vez to get a spot.

Thanks for the info Dave.

I'll hazard a guess and say we'll seem him not too long after the mid-season break. But, it would be hard to fathom he can't get a game if he is doing everything that is required of him.

He looks a real talent in the flashes i've seen of him in the seniors. Maybe it could be a consistency thing. Isn't working hard enough for 4 qtrs?

Interesting to hear an outsider's views on Vez, particularly someone who has insight a lot of us don't have.

I really want to see Vez and Currie play senior football sooner rather than later. Currie, in particular, should have been given a run by now, whether for Pyke or Playfair, and that's not dismissing the efforts of those two since their elevation.

Interesting that Rohan has been played in defence a bit recently; maybe he should get a back flank spot ahead of Mattner, maybe allowing Vez to be picked in the forwards where it seems he would do most good.

Rohan is a great tackler; Mattner is also a fine tackler but his general defensive accountability has waned. I've posted here in the past week about concerns over too many attacking halfbacks ignoring their defensive responsibilities, so maybe this is something to ponder.

As brave as Mattner has been, and can be (same as Richards), we need to start weeding out players who continually make mistakes and bad decisions when in possession.

Every function I go to I ask all the time and I hear "he's really close" so I'm hopeful this is true and we will see him soon.
I think we would have if we hadn't had such a crappy run with big injuries and they seem to have wanted to select the taller ressie players to cover for Bolts, Bradshaw and Seaby.

no way Pat will leave his two best friends are here (Currie & Mez) plus his loves Nicola way 2 much idd think he was stupid if he were 2 leave them

I'm sure if he thought he was being presented with a better opportunity somewhere else you wouldn't hang around because of your team mates/friends. Most of the Swans players have left their families to come to Sydney. Vez has already left his Family behind in Vic. I'm sure partners move about in support of the players too. You do mostly what is best for yourself and your immediate Family. You play footy to play Seniors, not to hang out with your friends. : )
