usually id be over the moon when someone re-signs at my club - but my reaction was '6 yrs....wtf?'

Hoping im wrong, but his form the last 2 years has been pretty diabolical for the player he was up to 2019. Hasnt been anywhere near the same player he was over that period. 6 years is way to long for a bloke whose body looks shot from carrying the side for so many years at a young age. Might come back to bite us on the bum.....again, i hope im wrong.

According to ITK's this deal was agreed to months ago.....

Given their plight and the need for a good news story I think Cripps and his manager have squeezed everything out of the clubs current situation and you can't blame them. Now for the ridiculous claims it's all front loaded and the big name FA's are still on their hit list. 🙄

It’s irrelevant what the terms of the contract are. Despite having an identical playing style to Cripps JPK is still playing good footy at 33. No reason Cripps can’t do the same if he’s managed carefully, and the club can develop some support around him.

Plenty of inside mids still playing well over the age of 30: Fyfe, Dangerfield, Cunnington.

JPK's form has dipped and the extension was not automatic. He may end up capt/coach of the Ressies on a similar deal as Mummy's at the Giants.

Haha what?

The whole point is that while Cripps may be a good player now, you'd expect a significant drop in performance when he's 31/32, which makes the quality of his contract (in terms of length) very debatable.

You will be paying a high salary for Cripps at the age of 31/32 after he's regressed significantly. If anything Cripps has already worsened over the last 2 years. Hasn't been an A grade midfielder for the most recent 2 years.

Like Merret it’s a great signing. Lock away your best player on long term deals.

Merrett is worth it

Cripps? Has played 22 games in a season once and as I’ve been widely vocal about, to keep a gun you often pay 20%ish under what he could command on the open market.

Both points Carlton have again mis managed imho

He’s the club captain and has carried this team for the past 5 years. He deserves every cent he is going to be paid.

His form slump has been greatly overstated too, he is still a very good player.

Cripps can barely run out a game at the age of 26/27 without fading badly late game.

Boak has outstanding endurance, and hasn't had to carry their midfield as long as Cripps has.

Mundy has also played a lot of forward this year to preserve his body. Difference is Mundy is at least serviceable up forward.
Trust GUH to add a like to something that’s just not factual....
Cripps is obviously carrying injuries at the moment, endurance hasn’t been an issue when he was a top three player in the comp a couple of years ago.
Please outline where Mundy is more serviceable than Cripps up forward? just something, anything factual.
Shouldn’t make stuff up to suit your narrative.

You'd think with Merrett's playstyle his durability would be far greater than Cripps.

When Merrett is 31/32 he could always focus on endurance and transition to a wingman. How is Cripps going to perform at the same age when he is incompetent literally anywhere else on the ground when he no longer has the physical presence to dominate clearances?
Carlton will be starting another rebuild by then anyway so doesn't really matter. They couldn't afford to let the captain walk.

All players go through dips in form, you’re also assuming he’s getting paid the same for each year of the contract which rarely happens.

Given the to and fro with the contract itself I’m skeptical he’s getting paid anywhere near what he would have at the start of the year, and more than likely the terms of the contract revolve around performance clauses.

Players don’t just lose their abilities. Cripps has never been an athletic player, and he has always been a slower lumbering mid. No doubt his form is down at the moment, but injury and the general malaise of the squad haven’t helped.

And he’s fairly old now, that’s the point. We’re not paying Cripps a big salary, he’s betting 6 years because that gives him security and he can’t command as much due to his formline over the past 18 months.

2 years is not a “DIP” in form lol

Only had a longish injury lay-off in 2017.

Played every game last year, and has played every game so far this year. Doesn’t miss much at all.

I’d say the exact scenario you’re envisioning is playing out with Cripps. Could have signed at Freo for more money (less years?) but chose to accept less at Carlton.

I love Cripps, one of my favourite players. Last year I thought was an aberration and he was injured. This year, I'm not so sure. His body definitely looks broken. Has little explosive movement through the stoppage and has been terrible defensively. Previously it didn't matter if he was bad defensively, because around stoppages people were following him. Now they don't, they run off him and exploit him.

If he plays at the same 2020 and 2021 standard for the next 6 years, this will ruin Carlton for this period. If he gets back to the real Cripps, it is brilliant for them and will mean he gets to lift a cup at some point as captain of a very promising list.

He has also played at a higher level than Merrett.

What is his getting paid? Its not like he is playing 5 games a year - 20, 21, 22, 20 & hasn't missed a game this year.

Well I wonder after this bit of news how many rival clubs are setting up a list of Carlton players to target - there is no way they will be able to keep all their better players under the salary cap legally now.
Didn’t you hear? Every single one of their contracts is front loaded and Marc Murphy is retiring, will get at least 2 big free agents this year

He can be a perm forward if needed. 6 years is a maybe 2 too long but a great reward for 9 years of service. I would be happy if we had a Cripps and did the same thing.

I would be shocked if any Blue poster saw this signing as anything but exciting.
We should have moved him on for Band 1 compo. He is not the player he was pre-2019 and doesn't look like ever getting that form back. I guess if we are going to pay Williams $800k, we need to pay Cripps more. Carlton FC is officially broken.
