Well im not about to jump about and say Collingwood make a mistake like many people said about the Hawks last year when they picked Roughead over Tambling , but I just want to know why he went so high. Footydraft and Burgatron I believe had him middle first round/early second round - yet he went at technically the 2nd first round pick of the draft?! Who is he , what does he do? Does he have that "X-Factor" that many believe Thomas has with him?

Collingwood have been played big time by the Hawks IMO. Hawks have probably said they would take Thomas at pick 3 so the Pies would be forced to use pick 2 on him, yet the Hawks really wanted Ellis to slip though.

Great gamesmanship if this turned out to be the case.

Exactly! I think they mind f^&*ed us.

It all depends how Pendlebury turns out, but I still think Collingwood could have taken Ellis and Thomas if they had the balls to leave Thomas to #5

Wow this whole idea of the Hawks rumour is spreading like Wildfire! Great way to start the Eddie vs Jeff rivalry. If the Hawks did that , great move by Pelchen , but dont be too sure that this wasnt what Collingwood wanted. Thomas could turn out to be amazing and Pendelbury - never hear of him - so who knows ?!

How so? Hawthorn publically stated that they'd take Ellis at 3. We obviously rate Thomas higher than Ellis, so we took him.

Here is a hot tip which indicates we got who we were after:

I'm happy with Pendles! :thumbsu:

you have to remember that just makes Footydraft and Burgatron wrong. it doesn't really tell us that he shouldn't have gone top 5.

Congrats to the three Gippsland players drafted in the top 5!! Great effort.

I think they are all worthy of their places.

Not at all surprised with Collingwood taking Thomas and then Pendlebury. Both, if realise their potential will be very good players.

The point is they could of got both :thumbsu:

Suffice to say Pendlebury, Thomas and Ellis will be watched very closely over there careers and this draft will be remembered by Collingwood fans with great regret if Ellis is better than either Thomas or Pendlebury

We copped it from all and sundry last year for taking Roughead at 2 and Lewis at 7...It all stopped soon enough when people finally saw those blokes play.

I suppose i shouldn't be surprised at the obsessive morons who stick rigidly to a given draft order (despite seeing very little of the players) abusing the Pies, but given the even nature of this draft I don't see anything wrong with what Collingwood have done this morning.

Outside of Murphy it was always going to be a lottery.

At the very least, Pies supporters will see most of their draftees play next year - we might have to wait a little longer down at Glenferrie...

Yeh its a pity . Out of our lot , only Bailey and Birchall look the only possibilities to play

Actually, it appears pretty obvious that Ellis and Thomas were going to go at #2 and #3 in whichever order Collingwood decided.

If we were too reluctant to leave Thomas to #5, doesn't that imply that we liked him more? As FIGJAM pointed out, Hawthorn had made it abundantly clear that they would take Ellis if he was available.

How can Hawthorn have tricked Collingwood into taking Thomas at #2? Nobody passes on the player they think is the best available.

Obviously if they were going to take Thomas, they were going to take Ellis at #3 - They're both quick, skilled players.

Collingwood obviously knew they wanted Pendlebury at #5, and then sized it up and chose between Ellis and Thomas at #2. Greg Swann said the other day that they had their preferred option already pencilled in, so it leads me to believe they'd already made the decision to go with Thomas.

People really need to realise that the rumours pre-draft are just that. Look at how far Swallow fell after being rumoured to be a candidate for Top 10. Alan Toovey went undrafted again!

well done pies thomas is a gem also hawks made right choice in ellis,The late mail on SEN 1116 was pendlebury could be a superstar. stanley from ocean grove is a good pick, but fill me in on cook and anthony????

Was a suprise, but so was Lewis at 7 last year...

Lewis's debut season was first rate but he had an AFL-ready body. I'm not knocking the kid but how much improvement is there left in him? Just a question.
