Surely we will all learn from the mistakes made with Fraser and the workload he has as a young player. We should be fast tracking Witts and Grundy but also being careful with them.
Grundy needs to be rested from all football next week and then given two games in the VFL. Witts plays the next three then rests and rotates as well. There is too much downside in overloading both young players but they need experiencing leading the rucks. Let's face it 21014 will not be our season so let's start putting processes in place that make sure future seasons are!

I agree with these sentiments.
Given that we won't realistically be in the top 4 this year, or be flag contenders - we are best of using this season as preparation for the next 2-3 years. (which seems to be what our recruitment strategy was all about anyway).

But it is a tough balance to try and get.
When playing, I think we should cap Grundy at 70% of the ruckwork per game (and ideally a bit less).
This may mean playing White as ruck for the rest of the time... which hurts our forward line, particularly without Reid.
Similarly Keefe (who has shown very little ability to ruck) can't really be taken out of the backline until Reid/Brown return.

We could bring Hudson/Witts - and play 2 ruckman each game. (and rotate these three around so both Witts and Grundy play most games, but also get time off) - problem being none of these three is really useful in the forward or backline.... I did suggest playing Witts as FF and the focal point of the attack in the VFL to try and build up those skills a bit more - it would be ideal if he could become a forward/ruck.
One strategy to make this work (and which Hawthorn used a lot last year), is to play 2-rucks for the first 3 quarters, then sub one out for a mid, leaving Grundy to ruck the 4th quarter. (after getting plenty of rest in the first 3/4)

Another option is to bring in Lynch while Reid is out, to play as the 3rd tall forward and 30-40% ruck.
---

At the end of the day, we don't have an ideal solution to this (and it's made even harder with Brown and Reid out)... and there will be plenty more growing pains before Grundy gets much closer to his potential in a couple of seasons.

Gives away some stupid free kicks, but sometimes I feel he suffers from what seems to be a conspiracy against Collingwood players over 6'3. Sometimes he will grab and it's obviously a free kick, other times I can't see ANYTHING on replay, or his opponents will have both hands in his back and clearly be pushing and the umpire will do shit all.

and We don't get any. Just Watch Cloke on Saturday

Yeah right. Dawes had no problems taking contested marks before he was used as a relief ruck.

Well by end of the Season he could not even take a Chest Mark

Then the next season Dawes' marking improved and he looked like he might start to earn the big bucks he's said to be paid by the Demons. The year after, though he edges closer to playing, he's going to miss the benefit of a pre-season. Will he ultimately become a star at Melbourne?:p Or will he vindicate Buck's decision to wish him well and good bye?:D Time will tell.

Reckon the big thing is that Grundy needs some support in the ruck. That's not unique to him, it applied to an established topliner like Goldstein last year.

Different body shape, mentality and style to Fraser, but I'd hate to see us run Grundy into the ground by leaving him one out against older, stronger bodies like we did with Josh.

He does give away too many free kicks. He has an awesome vertical leap however.

Im ok with a big physical ruckman giving away some free kicks there is a plus side to being so aggressive and it comes in team intimidation causing fumbling and the like from opposition.

Have a look at Essendon, Brisbane and Port sides early 00s all were hard tough and crossed the line having a few players out suspended during each season at various times.

Hawks late 80s same thing.

You can already see Buckley is getting even usually timid players to get in the faces of opposition see Caffes game on Johnson he was physically into and verbally at every opportunity.
Adams was smashing in and getting Selwoods face from the moment he came on, I believe given time for the wheel to turn Buckely is going to have a tough, skilled and attacking team it will be worth the wait.

Grundy needs rest through the season and I presume he'll get it from Witts or Hudson. It's not a one man show and nothing I've seen to date would suggest he'll be run into the ground.

On Grundy and Witts playing, I don't think we need it against the the bees this week. But more generally, if Witts comes in, then we would have issues if we plonked him in the square with Cloke getting his kicks up the ground and bombing it in. Would make it much easier for the opposition to run the ball out of defence. Maybe if Witts rucked 60% of the time with Grundy forward, but I reckon it would be a similar problem.

Hard to know what to do though. If Lynch was in form, you could get him taking 40% of the ruck duties and having that three tall set-up as DRF mentioned.

We are not going to win the flag this year. If we play Grundy and Witts together for the rest of the season they may just develop a partnership that turns us into a legitimate threat next season and beyond.

I can't speak for other posters, but I am not ready to abandon all hope of a premiership so early in the year. Let's at least get a few more losses into the season before we start tanking.

I don't see it as tanking. IMO we need to play with two rucks to compete with the best sides. It would also allow White to play solely up forward and take some of the heat off Cloke. I think it would make us a better side now.

It is not tanking specifically but its a relative of it.

I think we need to play a mixture of best 22 and young players, as we always have under Bucks, maybe leaning towards best 22. Playing Grundy and Witts for the sole purpose of developing the partnership for the future and not because its the best we can field, is an imbalance.

Brodie's shown more in his first 11 games than the Kruezer Cup trophy did. The kid's a future gun. He'll make a few mistakes here and there but that's to be expected. If you look at his stats you'll find he compares favourably to all ruckmen in the AFL in at least one category, is ahead of many of them in some categories and behind only Mumford in tackles. He's up for it and will be embraced more and more by the Collingwood faithful as he learns more.

People need to note the difference between criticizing a players game and just out and out calling them shit, which I have seen no one do.

I hope they pump as many games into him as possible, his clearly going to be a legit player in a couple of Seasons. The free kicks are a little bit of a worry, but he'll develop with experience. Love his attack on the ball and offcourse the athletism.
