Don't really hate rugby league but after fifteen minutes of State of Origin last night:

Happens every time.

American footy is based on how wars were fought hundreads of years ago, if that helps in the way of viewing the game. Interesting how many people don't like soccer, yet like footy. They way footy has evolved (structures, patterns of passing between players), it's pretty much soccer! Soccer with an oval ball, use of hands, no offside and no top bar. Just saying...

...tackling, bumping, ruck contests, comparatively no diving, no send offs, scoring, a game that ends when the time runs out, on an oval field, players who try and get up and walk on broken legs and to my knowledge no player that has ever been stretchered off with a blood nose.

So in other words, a completely different sport.

"tackling, bumping" - Plenty of tackling in soccer, it's just a different kind. Bumping? Plenty of that as well.
"comparatively no diving" - Some footy players have a bigger reputation for diving as any soccer player I know of. (Stevie Jay, Lloyd)
"scoring" - I've never understood this criticism. It's hard for me to believe that there are people who don't recognise that scoring in soccer is many, many times harder than in footy. Hence, the lower scores.
"a game that ends when the time runs out" - How often do 20 minute quarters go on for more than 1/2 an hour?
"players who try and get up and walk on broken legs" -
"to my knowledge no player that has ever been stretchered off with a blood nose."- To your knowledge doesn't count. You have to know for certain.

Just to be clear, Simple Jack. I am not, not getting into a s***fight with you, on a thread. Kay?

American oval-track motor racing would be close to the most boring of all sports. You might just as well spend three hours spinning a top on your kitchen floor and watching it go round and round and round and round and zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Soccer shits me to tears, tried watchin' it once. 90 minutes for a nil all draw, a couple blokes (apparently MEN) cried cos a ladybird touched his shin and sent him flying through the air, which apparently dislocated his shoulder and ruptured a spleen. Then they send the offending ladybird off with a beautifully coloured card.
They then call it football because only the feet are used, Hmmm, they use their heads, their MIGHTY chests, knees, hands (when they throw it in from the side and of course the goalie can do what ever he likes) and of course they can use their feet, truly football, obviously.

Sorry, I should have just said soccer is a sport I hate, but I gotta give a reason don't I lol.

For those who hate car racing, yeah I agree, but I would sit down for half an hour if it was purely just stacks and pile ups and of course a few fires.

Basketball is an awful ego fueled sport. NFL doesn't appeal to me much either. For much of the same reasons. Of the American sports I find baseball and ice hockey the best. Ice hockey is terrific to watch live. Otherwise I have very little time for most motor sports aside from the occasional peak at F1 if Webber is doing well. Rugby I struggle with also. Union is bearable. Internationals only. League just doesn't appeal to me at all. I struggle to watch it. All my domestic football attention span is very much dedicated to footy. As far as sport I enjoy are concerned. Its football by a country mile. Followed by tennis and soccer (all international and European domestic). International cricket (involving Australia). Golf majors. I enjoy watching squash and ski racing also.

As I said, completely different sport.
"comparatively no diving" - Some footy players have a bigger reputation for diving as any soccer player I know of. (Stevie Jay, Lloyd)
Sure, that's why I said comparatively. The diving levels can't even come close to being compared. As an aside, I was shocked when someone posted a 6 minute video in some other thread showing Messi not diving. Great effort from him, but if someone makes a 6 minute video just to show a player not diving, you know there is a huge culture problem with a sport.
"scoring" - I've never understood this criticism. It's hard for me to believe that there are people who don't recognise that scoring in soccer is many, many times harder than in footy. Hence, the lower scores.
I don't mind low scoring, but a game where no scoring is exceedingly common I'm really going to struggle to deal with.
"a game that ends when the time runs out" - How often do 20 minute quarters go on for more than 1/2 an hour?
When the official game clock reaches 0 the siren is blown and the game ends, not some completely subjective manner where a ref just decides 'yeah that'll do'. And considering the horrible standard of AFL umpires thank christ.

"players who try and get up and walk on broken legs" -
"to my knowledge no player that has ever been stretchered off with a blood nose."- To your knowledge doesn't count. You have to know for certain.

I'll explain these ones;
2010, in a world cup game against Nigeria or something, one of their players got a gentle knock to the nose and literally sat on the ground and waited for a stretcher to take him off (wasting time, but still appalling). 2 weeks later, Michael Barlow has his leg shattered and tries to stand up on it only to have the bone wobble and be forced to sit down. He then proceeds to make no fuss whatsoever on the stretcher.

Just to be clear, Simple Jack. I am not, not getting into a s***fight with you, on a thread. Kay?
Not at all, I just find the statement that footy is basically soccer to be intolerable.

I think one of the problems with F1 is that it seems to be marketed as the elite of the elite, or the best drivers in the world. However, as far as I'm aware many of the drivers are just guys that can bring in big sponsorships and are not necessarily great drivers. That said, unlike NASCAR where you go in endless circles, I think there is plenty of skill involved in F1.

You know nothing about the sport then. Would take every bit if not more skill to drive a NASCAR stock car as a F1 or any other racing car.

An ex F1 and V8 Supercar driver are currently in the series and haven't exactly set the world on fire. Yeah.....real easy.

One thing I'm glad of.......being able to enjoy watching other sports and the various skills on offer. My goodness, some of you must live some extremely boring lives.

I really, really dislike horse racing. Why is it a sport? Who is the sportsman? The jockey? The trainer? And no, I don't care at all about 'Australia's favourite mare Black Caviar.'

What defines a sport? And if there were some kind of formal recognition that it wasn't, how would that change anyones perception of it?

Who is the sportsman
The horse, of course.

The jockey?
Captain.

The trainer?
Coach.

And no, I don't care at all about 'Australia's favourite mare Black Caviar.'
It's well over done; the coverage she gets. Shame that despite that, not everyone will ever fully appreciate just how good she is.

See - it's just like footy... :D

Actually it's more a case of divergent evolution. Codification and uniform rules for a league are a relatively recent innovation. For example; a number of the founding clubs of the English FA today are members of the Rugby Union. Aussie rules footy did not evolve from modern soccer as we know it today.

You are referring to the book "the art of war" I take it? Absolutely fascinating stuff, the principles are 100% transferable to gridiron. That's why I love the game so much it's so unique the way it's played and coached...already pumped for the start of the season and it's 2-3 months away!

The thing I dislike with horse racing is that it's almost entirely driven by gambling. You won't go more than 30 seconds on a discussion of horse racing without betting odds being included.

So to go with your comparisons of trainer -> coach and so forth, then the fans/supporters are gamblers.

Cricket - it's 20 blokes standing around in their PJ's whilst two play in the middle. What sort of sport stops during a game to eat cucumber bloody sandwiches? Can be played for 5 games over 25 days and still not end in a result AND stops for a bit of rain.

Its probably easier to just say what i like...........AFL, Tennis, Horse Racing (yes it is a sport).

Hate
Golf, Cricket, Rugby

The rest i am impartial to.

One of the most ignorant anti-football posts I have ever read, though I will agree with the bolded

Most American sports I dislike - too much stop-start and time-out crap, just let it flow ffs

Also rugby league and equastrian - RSPCA says hi

Probably no sports I hate, but motor sports are right up there

Are you saying that rugby players are animals? :D

The intelligence of your average NASCAR or NFL fan says alot about the standard of those two sports.

NASCAR is without question the worst "sport" in the world. Some motor racing I can see the appeal, but driving around an oval track for hours, I don't see how it appeals on any level.

Grid iron comes a close second. Just a poorly conceived idea where fat guys whose skillset stretches to blocking another fat guy are able to label themselves elite athletes. Commercialised garbage. Very American. Rugby league is a more entertaining version of grid iron, and that's saying something.

I find alot of criticisms of soccer in this thread to be incredibly ignorant and dismissive of the nuances of the game, but in saying that I'm probably opening myself up to the same crticism from an NFL fan. Each to their own. I do however understand why diving puts so many people off, and seeing it creep into the AFL a bit more is a genuine concern.

You bag NFL and then say anyone who doesn't like Soccer is ignorant and dismissive???

I actually double checked to see whether I wandered into the bay.

Have you ever watched NFL? I'm not going to try to sway anyones mind including yours but if you've even seen even a quarter of it you'll see a little more than fat guys. Sure there a big guys in the side to 'block' but did you know most of them can run the 100 in sub 14 seconds (at 130+kgs). Then obviously you have the Quarterback who is tall and athletic and can throw a ball 80 metres into a waste basket. Then there's the arguably most talaneted group of wide recievers and running backs and to a lesser extent tight ends who catch, block, run and score. This is just on offense. Then you have people who are given the job of stopping them.

You round NFL into fat guys who block and then say critisms of soccer are ignorant and dismissive? Yes you did open yourself up chief.

For those saying that American Football is boring, go and play Madden on a console. I guarantee you that after a few days you will fall in love with the sport as it teaches you all about the tactics and strategies used.

ha this is exactly how I found and fell in love with gridiron.

Really surprised how many don't like car racing. Wow. I thought every male loved it. Evidently not.
To be fair I don't think very many men frequent Big Footy!
I get the impression the main demographic are pimply faced Melbournian teenagers who either know or played on a Brownlow medallist and should actually be playing AFL instead of the guys with the real talent.:D
