"CROWDS at next year’s AFL matches could be scaled back until the controversial Perth Stadium footbridge is complete."

Only WA could stuff up a thing like this, its meant to be a bridge not an art project.

The Romans could build a bridge for 40,000 soldiers in 10 days................

So rather than fix it in the next, what, 6-9 months, you watch them let it drag on for political pot shot reasons.
They could easily scrap the design and do a sinple concrete bridge using the existing work to date. Add some leds that change colours, plop an art installation from an artist who had something in sculptures by the sea, and voila, its done

There are three of those already in existence. So we can live without it.

If we really need a fourth, roll out a military floating but temporary solution. It'll give the army something to do.

So as of now it looks like a 60,000 seat stadium and a multi platform train station are going to be built in less time than it will take to build a foot bridge

What a **** up the bridge has become

As someone who isnt in perth, wtf is going on with this bridge?

Cant they get the army or similar to erect a temp structure while this is completed?

A complex artwork more than a mere bridge, not a single straight line in it anywhere. Not designed for ease of construction. Apparently the type of steel needed and scope of the engineering involved was too much for local firms, so the contract went overseas. Seems it is too complex for the winning contractor anyways, and they are months behind schedule.

It is a typical Perth thing...

Buildings that are intended to be a landmark more than a mere building always tend to run over time and over budget, and cop heaps of criticism for it - eg.. Perth Arena.

Buildings that are designed and constructed for more practical purposes over aesthetics get slammed for being too dull and boring - eg.. Perth Convention Centre.

Can't win either way.

No. That has been rigorously debunked. Also the contract went to a local form that placed the order O/S.
It was perceived as an expedient way to make money.
I see no justification for the government shelling out more than the contracted price for this construction.
That is the whole idea of tendering.

The Perth Arena was widely criticized before the final cladding which changed things drastically.
The Convention Centre is literally a tin shed and as such is an eyesore.
A much simpler design with cheaper construction would be more appealing.

I took many photos during the PA construction.

Whilst the cladding hadn't been installed (horiible multi-coloured metal first cladding had been), a truck driver on Wellington St yell at me asking why I was taking pics of such an ugly building. Shows the problem with people who have loud opinions who don't know what they are talking about and/or jumping to conclusions. Shock jocks & some pollies are examples.

Maybe, but it's a brilliant facility. Even if it is facing the wrong way.
So is the Arena mind you, but the Arena did have a 200% cost blowout.

that makes sense re an army temporary solution.

the reason why the bridge is an art piece and taking longer, is we have three existing footbridges. given that's the case, it really isn't a big issue that the fourth footbridge isn't ready yet.

I guess WA does mean wait awhile

I don't know if it is considered a "cost blowout" as it was caused by a change of scope of the project. I.e. the parking was moved from over the railway to under PA.

It's still a tin shed that detracts severely from the view at Kings Park.
It has no design features whatsoever unless you call a lack of windows to the Swan River a feature.

Horrible cheap looking building that's taken up absolute prime Perth real estate, the thing is a disgrace.

pull it down and build it over the train line with a serving station underneath.

this could be anywhere. Including along the freeway, Subi, East Perth or burswood.

That's the point though, it was a plain and simple design where the highest regard was given to it's actual function - a convention centre. To that aim it achieved it's objective, and it was broadly built on time and on budget. Start ****ing around with the design and it can get complex - which adds time and cost.

That's all great and it wouldn't be so bad if it was tucked away over in near Northbride or something but it occupies an absolute prime spot at the bottom of the best views of Perth's skyline, the thing looks like junk and is an eyesore.
