The National Rugby League’s two-day Nines festival could be the surprise event to open the Perth Stadium.

The NRL is considering staging the pre-season carnival-style competition, featuring its 16 teams, over a weekend in early February. The stadium’s official handover is scheduled for February 22.

Cricket Australia and the WA Cricket Association have said they still hope a one-day international between Australia and England could be the blockbuster first sports event at the stadium on January 28. They are willing to delay a decision on the venue.

It is still to be decided which of the State’s AFL teams will play first at the stadium. But rugby league could steal a march on the “traditional” WA sports of cricket and AFL with its short-form carnival.

The WA Government is in talks with the NRL about hosting the event to showcase the stadium but would have to pay around $3 million to secure it.

“Event announcements will be made in due course,” VenuesLive chief executive Mike McKenna said.

WTF.

Why would you play RL at the new stadium, which BTW RL claim they hate playing at football/cricket grounds.

East Perth ground is more than suitable, except for SOO.

It's not a bad idea on the NRL's part.
An oval gives the teams areas to warm up/down between games, where players can also interact with spectators over the fence. (On the other hand they do have additional seating to go inside the oval to make it a rectangular stadium.)

It would also give RL a lot of publicity as people will go in order to get a look at the new stadium, knowing that it's going to be easier to get tickets than for AFL in the first while when everybody wants to go.

From PS's perspective it'd be a good soft launch and they can bill it as an opportunity to have a look around while the place isn't jam-packed.

Plus, it gives them bragging rights that they had the first sporting event at PS.

Question is, will the people who hated the idea of a Pom of questionable ability (according to them) opening the stadium feel any better about RL opening the venue? :D :p

As long as they are going to pay the $1 million rental that's fine by me.
At the moment rl cannot afford anything.
The NRL only had 6,000 attend their last Perth game.
WTF is interested in rl9s ?

Yes, plenty of space at Subiaco.

It would also give RL a lot of publicity

And when has the perth stadium authority been interested in giving out charity ?

The idea is to get some income to PAY for the new stadium not give freebies away.

Not you clearly, but RL9s isn't one RL game, is it? It's a number of fast-paced short games featuring all teams so it's not like it only appeals to fans of two teams.

Oh hi Subiaco, I didn't know you were part of this discussion.

Charity has gatecrashed the discussion too!

Again nobody said anything about giving out freebies...

RL and soccer fans both say they hate playing at oval stadiums. It's the administrators with $ signs in their eyes who want to play there.

Bear in mind it will cost the stadium $3mil upfront to stage the game - cost benefit analysis?

Surely the RL pre-season comp would find other grounds more viable for the expected crowd.

Reading an article on it earlier today they were saying that the NRL want the WA State Government to pay them $3 million to bring the tournament over. Presumably they (NRL) get a fixed return and then the risk falls on the state government to recoup the costs.

The NRL pre-season comp is currently played in Auckland but there is some wrangling over renewing the contract due to dwindling crowds over there. I think it is an NRL bargaining chip to try and leverage better deal somewhere else.

Only 6,000 NRL fans attended the last NRL game and you more people to attend non-NRL games?

Why not. subiaco would be cheaper.

Charity has gatecrashed the discussion too!

NO. Certainly not freebies in this case it's COSTING WA taxpayers.
The idea of a stadium is to CHARGE money FFS.

IF ANY EVENT IS GOOD ENOUGH THEN IT CAN AFFORD TO PAY RENT AND MAKE A PROFIT.

First edition of the 9’s in Auckland drew 50,000 people. It’s a carnival atmosphere. People go to
Drink and dress up and there’s football on the side.

Yes the numbers have slipped the last two years, but it’s probably better as an event that you move around every year.

Do you think that would happen at Perth stadium?

I never at any point said it should be free and I would appreciate if you'd (A) reply to what I'm saying and not argue against something I didn't even say, and (B) not use all caps and yell at me, just because you have a strong opinion which you want to push over my "wrong" opinion.

It happened with the Union 7's tournament at Adelaide Oval. First year was good and then it declined. With PS you'd have the added curiosity factor of people going for a look at the new stadium.

Maybe a one year deal then?
$35 entry and $7 for a bucket of chips - they might just cover their costs with enough curious fans wanting a look at the stadium

Yeah I think these "festivals" (the 7s and 9s from the different codes) should be on one- or two-year rotations. Keep it fresh. One year for the excitement of something new and one running off the coat-tails of a good day/weekend at the football.
I went to the first year of the Sevens in Adelaide and loved it, went the second year coz I loved the first, and then never got around to going again.

Are you serious ? That's like expecting 50, to go AFLX in Sydney.
If NRL can only draw 6,000 in Perth how many will go and see non-NRL event.

You don't seem to grasp the facts that a stadium needs to charge rent. Somebody has to pay for the stadium, why not the users ?
While would you want to pay $3 million for somebody to play in your stadium ?
If you want charity then why not WAFL games or international games of Australian Football.

You don't seem to grasp the fact that it wouldn't be charity, it'd be business. They'd be a sponsor in the same way as Telstra or Toyota. It's a business arrangement. We give you money (or pay for your venue hire) in return for on-field and perimeter advertising, TV advertising, and having people from Sydney etc come to Perth for the event and also they get to play tourist for the weekend. The NRL "pay" for the venue by giving WA those things. Charity is giving and getting nothing in return. Business is giving and getting. Good luck getting that kind of business deal going with the WAFL (pretty sure nobody from Sydney gonna fly over to watch Peel play East Perth at any venue!) or New Zealand vs Fiji international Aussie Rules - that WOULD be charity.
