Perth Stadium (Optus Stadium)

This is incredible. A Dockers purple haze game is going to be particularly cool.

I’m expecting the pre-games and possibly post games in Perth to be very spectacular. The advantage of LED lighting, it can all be integrated and controlled from a single source. So with the stadium lights, the screens and the advertising all being LEDs it allows a fully integrated show.

Hopefully they go and find a gun lighting/video person/company to come up with something amazing.

Something tells me Freo will have a much better light show/pre-game display than the Eagles. Having Purple as their colour, its going to look bloody awesome at night compared to yellow and blue. Although blue might still look pretty darn cool.
Royal is gonna work better than navy too.

So the Eagles open the stadium for the AFL with a club they have some history with and Freo get to host the first showdown.

Seems to be a pretty decent result.

Looking forward to the game against Fremantle, works great because the queens birthday is the next day. Will be great to experience the new stadium.

Clear idea of what that is worth ? $0 ?
any publicity is good publicity I would have thought.?

personally I don't want the ground sponsored - but if I was optus or bankwest, it would be annoying, particularly if it was essentially a signed deal and there was politics involved in not announcing it before the fixture is released.

I know several years ago kardinia park changed its name (from skilled to Simonds or one of the sponsors), and it happened after the draw (may have been mid -november) and all thru the season the old name was mentioned still in official fixtures (other than the online AFL.com version which had the correct new name). of course, supporters called it the old name for years...

So there is all up 6? night games at the stadium?

5.

Disappointing TBH. They've got the best lighting system in the world and the AFL doesn't want to use it. Early in the season when it's likely to be still pretty hot night games are a no brainer, but they scheduled the first 4 games as day or twilight matches.

The WA Government requested no night games until around June-July due to the footbridge not being ready.

No. They requested no weekday night games (Thursday or Friday) night games for that time. The reason was the load on the train system with commuters still needing the public transport.

Saturday night games would be fine.

Oh, I was under the impression it was all night games. My mistake then.

WA very rarely gets full night games anyway due to the time difference. It’s stupid but not a lot we can do about it unfortunately.

We can bitch and moan about it like every other club does.

Given our games are usually covered by Fox, there's no reason why we couldn't have 7pm or 7:30pm starts. Fox would probably prefer that given it means less clash with the other Saturday night game, and 7 Perth would prefer it because the later it is the higher it will rate and wouldn't clash with their beloved news.

Fox have 7 channels to work with so they’re not too fussed about a clash I wouldn’t think.

End of the day it comes down to eastern seaboard ratings, because that’s where the bulk of their viewership is. Our ‘night’ games get scheduled as twilights because people over east don’t want to be watching a game with a 10pm bounce down unfortunately.

I guess you'd have to ask Fox, but 2 games on at the same time does cannibalise each games' audiences. And they did campaign heavily for the Saturday twilight slot for precisely that reason - it was an exclusive timeslot.
In any case, I doubt they'd be opposed to it.

Well, it would be 9pm starts with a 7pm WST start, but in any case those people on the East Coast are probably watching the other game anyway. Perth Fox audiences are not insignificant as we found out this year when city by city numbers started to get published.
I mean really, you think Fremantle v Gold Coast isn't at 7pm because the AFL are worried about Melbourne audiences?

Do you have any links to the city by city numbers, or know where to find them?

Freo sports lounge allocation is reportedly already exhausted.

Although the club is quite clearly more concerned with accepting overs from corporates rather than cater to members who have been around for years and enquired first. The ‘family’ nature of the club is more and more a myth these days unfortunately.

I’m not sure why even make a big deal advertising this category when they don’t really have any intention of selling to Joe Public. It’s pretty much the Medallion club I suppose.
