Just wondering how the new turf will hold up from all the concert goers. Sheeran's concert is on the 3rd of March, I guess the first game will be 3 weeks later. Will that be long enough to recover?

I had the same thought when I saw the announcement. Can't see it ending well.

Adelaide Oval hosted its first AFL game 7 days after the Rolling Stones were due to perform (the cancelled concert) - the stage had been set up and removed which left some marks but it was already repairing quite well. Three weeks between Sheeran and the AFL will mean you'll hardly be able to tell that it happened.

Gee I love stadiums. This one is looking like it's going to be a beauty. Love the design. Having never been to that side of the world (It's further than NZ is to Melbourne for crying out loud!) now I've got even more motivation to head over there for next season!
Kinda makes me wish they'd pool a whole bunch of pointless money into revamping the G, reckon they could do some incredible stuff with it. Not like the current form is historical or special in any way really.

Sports Minister Mick Murray is playing hardball with the West Australian Football Commission in talks about the new Perth stadium, signalling the State Government could pull a funding offer.

In comments that reveal the State’s frustration with the WAFC over the stadium negotiations, Mr Murray said there was “no guarantee” a multimillion-dollar proposal would stay on the table.

The warning follows what Mr Murray said was the “disappointing” decision by the commission to cancel a meeting with the minister as well as Premier Mark McGowan and Treasurer Ben Wyatt.

Ed Sheeran opening the stadium is a ******* joke after this stadium has been pushed so hard to be a "WA" stadium. So we get some English prick who has no connection to this country whatsoever, to open the stadium? A hallmark of this city and the state?
Don't think it matters, when the first footy game is there that will be the opening of the new stadium for footy, same goes for cricket.
The first timer You or I go there will be the opening of the new stadium for us.
I don't get what the big deal is.

Because tax payers just paid $1.5 billion dollars for this stadium and it would be nice to have something on that resonated a bit more with the WA population.

Do you have a suggestion of a WA artist who will sell-out 65,000-odd tickets? I don't have a lot of knowledge in this area but is there a WA born-and-bred artist/band who'd pack the place?
As much as anything the timing of Sheeran's tour made it a good opportunity to have the concert there and not at Subiaco; if he wasn't coming then odds-on it would have been AFL Round 1 or the cricket. I doubt they'll get Ed to cut a ribbon or something like that. If the place was ready February this year there's a good chance the first event would have been Adele. Purely by timing.
"This stadium officially opened by Mr Edward Sheeran" won't go on a plaque anywhere.

The Government and Venueslive will be in no position to turn down the millions of dollars they will make from this one event. It may not be ideal but money talks and the stadium needs to be paid for, they need as much additional content on top of AFL and Cricket as they can get.

We pay tax all the time be it for hospitals, roads, education or sports stadiums. An opening of a stadium is obviously a big deal to you and thats fine, the opening for me will be the first time I go there.

How is it not ideal? Sold-out world-class performer putting the venue on an international stage first-up.

But will they sell out a 65,000 seat concert venue? It'd be pretty shite if the place was only half-full, just to say a WA artist did the first gig there.
