The emergence of Hansen as a 10 year CHF has made me rethink where our spine is going to be next season.

Black and O'Keefe are going to make strong claims for FF

I honestly see Drew's best position at CHB marshalling the defence.

A lot will come down to how Tarrant and Delaney shape up.

I worry how all these injuries will question his mobility. He's not getting any younger or quicker.

If Hansen, Grima and our ruckman continue on their good form of this year, and 1-2 of Tarrant, Black, Delaney and O'Keefe emerge next year... I'm not exactly sure where that leaves Drew. We certainly need his leadership, work ethic and good attitude around the club.

Perhaps he could play the old Fridge Roberts tall utility role?

Black and O'Keefe will be HFF's/FP's until they develop physically enough to hold down a Key Position. Realistically thats still 3 or 4 years down the track so I think at least until then Petrie should remain at FF. By that time he might be looking for retirement anyway or at least a reduced role.

Drew will get one of the KPP roles, I can only see Grima and Hansen pushing him out.

I can't see it. Drew is 7cm taller than the Fridge.

O'Keefe looks a likely pocket type, but he'll be fighting for a spot with Milky and Azza.

Black is not a flanker type, he is definitely a FF and if he hits the ground running in 2011, then he and Lachie should probably nail the 2 KPF spots.

Some of his best work was as that 3rd man up in the backline.

A CHB/ wingman ala Richo type could be an option as it would help the backline out but it can also free up Thommo to be more of a rebounding defender and not have 2 take the gorillas.

I still reckon Petrie could be an AA ruckman.

His tapwork is actually very good, and around the ground he would dominate anyone in the league.

Keep him at FF, at least for the moment. If someone else does step up (say, NOK or Black), then we consider the backline, but at the moment, it's obvious that our forward line is struggling most. Defensively, when fully fit, we're well off.

He is a monty for FF; Hansen out at CHF with his huge tank. He could also play as 2nd ruck or CHB.

As much as we can get excited about guys like Delaney, Black and NOK they are not proven at this level (yet). Drew is a gun.

Some people here are in fantasy land. As if Black and O'Keefe will play 22 games next year. They'll be lucky to play 15 between them. Our forward line has huge gaps that Drew will help feel.

In Brad Scott's first long interview as a North man, last October, he was asked "Drew Petrie's been played all over the field previously, do you have an idea where he should play in your best lineup?"

Without hesitation he said "Yep, Full Forward!"

End of/

He had one good year in the ruck, he had one good year up forward and one good year down back and there has been a lot of time in between that has been fairly average.

He did run and compete in the ruck but far too often he wasn't remotely in the contest and we got crushed in the ruck in those big games, in his good year.

He just doesn't have the height or the leap, he could relief ruck against lesser ruckmen but there is no way he should ever play against a top class ruckman again. I'd rather see Daw elevated than Drew back in the ruck.

I reckon I could see him playing the Gary Busey part in a remake of Big Wednesday.

Failing that, yeah, Full Forward probably sounds like the go.

I fear that if he did play that role Mick Malthouse would snap him up and get much more out of him. At least we'd be left with Matt and Jack though I guess, with Bear running the show.

As good as Petrie will become i really think the playing group of 2001-2003 are nothing but transitional players. By the time we will be competing for a flag in 2 years, Petrie, Firrito, Pratt will all be too old. I even think wells is a transitional player.

I don't understand your line of thinking.

It seems, you're trying to say, Petrie, Wells, Pratt, Firrito etc, will have nothing to do with a serious finals tilt in just 2 years?

If so, you're dead wrong. You only have to look at the 1999 Grand Final to see that we had players over 30 within the squad. John Blakey (33), Mick Martyn (31), Craig Sholl (31, closer to 32), Brett Allison (31) etc. Wayne Carey would have been around 28 years of age at the time, meaning in 2 years as you suggest, we push for finals heavily, Petrie would be (29), Firrito (28), Wells (27).

If they are just transitional players, then in 2 years, who do you suppose will fill their void, if they're too old to play?
