Pick 14

Of those 5 - two (Crowden, giro) - Speculative, late picks and may not be on the list come 2020. Matera and Ballas are small forwards and Ballas is in his last year. Not sure who the 5th is.

Pretty confident Crowden will be on the list...seeing as he has a contract til 2021...just sayin' =)

Liam Stocker is on Tommorow's Heroes.

Sounds like he's got his head screwed on. Very much in the Brayshaw mould.

Very good video of stocker. I like him. Reminds me a bit of a Blake acres type. I think stocker would be the safer choice with hill having more upside.

I think with where the club is at (a lot of turnover and a lot of young players) someone like stocker would fit nicely as he seems a good leader and strong character. Not saying hill isn’t, but it’s stocker for me, although wouldn’t be disappointed with hill!

Comparison: Jack Steele

I think we can do better at our pick.
Harsh I reckon. Jack Steele is a handy footballer and would be fine for a teens pick.

Got to give a 20% discount for player ability at St Kilda given their coach and development history

Consistency is what wins a Morrish medal. And which team will quell him when he plays behind Fyfe Blakely Brayshaw cerra and hill?

I suspect they way the TAC Cup is organised these days the players who are in the Victoria or Country U18 squads miss less games than they used to; meaning there is a greater chance that it won't be won by the best player playing all the matches. This is what happens here isn't it? The WA squad members miss so many games they can't win it. Or they end up in reserves or seniors. Check out the spuds in this list!

Not sure why some are saying we need a small forward. We have one of the best in the comp in Walters. We just need another midfielder to be able to cover for him
With 3 tall forwards, plus Walters we need some pace in our forward line. I would like us to get 2 or 3 players who apply elite forward pressure, and who know how to score goals.

The TAC Cup and the WAFL Colts both have the same situation with their players, those who are physically mature early will do well against their potentially higher skilled but slighter framed opponents.

The no-tagging rules recently have made the outside runners look better lately though. I'm not sure those rules are in the WAFL colts.

Well obviously, but I highly doubt there are 2 or 3 elite forward pressure forwards out there who can also kick goals.

You also don't need 6 forwards scoring 40+ goals a year.

I agree, but we do need some forward pressure and at the moment we have little.

Also Hogan, and maybe Walters are the only two players capable of kicking 40 goals. If Lobb kicks 20+ we have done well, and the same for McCarthy or who ever plays as the 3rd tall.

I really like Sam Sturt at 14, and then someone like Stack.

Well that does look good for him. FWIW I reckon he goes all right, just has limitations. The main one being he is slow to release the ball at times. Love his hardness at it

2018 Ballantyne 21 goals from 17 (pick 21) and Walters 22 from 18 (pick 53) last year. Betts 29 from 18 (pick 3), Higgins 15 from 20 (pick 17), Stephenson 38 from 26 (pick 6)

Just from this sample of players, Ballantyne and Walters better with forward defensive pressure and over a wider area than the others even as they are getting older, elite crumbing speed will always creat opportunities even in a lower side, getting the ball in and fast more often will result in more goals for the elite crumbing forwards, hence more goals over career particularly when when their side has a strong midfield and higher up the ladder. The time would be right for us to get Hill I would think.

Woodcock.

Bit odd to discount players purely based on height. They're not marking targets, unless you're saying all decent midfielders have to win one out in the air? Walters over McGovern? Waist height for tackles doesn't vary that much. I'd love to understand why you think height makes such a massive difference over other factors.

No, I'm not discounting them purely on height. short people can be guns. But apart from Walters, our short players lack the attributes (bulk/speed/skill/smarts/vision/leap) needed to overcome their lack of height. The only standout is Colyer's speed, but he can't kick.

Isn't it obvious why height make such a difference? Tackling (making/breaking), marking, vision, reach, contested possessions, physical presence, visibility as a target or for blocking space, etc. The cumulative effect of these things becomes a massive problem if we are playing too many who are just average lightweights with no weapons.

Back to pick 14, I'd prefer a bigger body, but if we take Hill, then at least he has speed and skill and might be able to use that. But it would be better for our team if he was the only sub 175cm player on the list. Maybe in a few years that might well be the case.
