Pick 14

While Hill is still my first preference at 14, I won't be heartbroken if we don't take him... I just want whomever we pick to kick as well as he does. Looking at our current midfield, there' really aren't that many truly precision kicks in there (Cerra aside, but I'm expecting him to be tagged his entire career going forwards).

Hill may not have height or strength, but he does have both the speed and skill to provide some more promising I50s to our revamped (and far taller) forward line. Langdon and Colyer are both fast but I Hill is probably not only faster than them both, but a better kick than both by all accounts.

S Hill used to be such a beautiful I50 kick five years ago... we really miss those lazer like I50 entries he and suban used to deliver once upon a time.

Skills are overrated if you’re 175cm. How many short people did West Coast have again? How many in the midfield?

I’d only call Jetta and Gaff elite kicks from their midfield tbh and Gaff didn’t even play the Grand Final. Shuey and Yeo are about average kicks going across the league for best 22 players but their size and strength whilst still being reasonably athletic makes them arguably better players than Gaff and definitely better than Jetta.

Point I’m making is a powerful 185-190cm mid with satisfactory foot skills will make far more impact on a game than a 175cm, 65kg winger with the best skills in the world.

That’s what Ian Hill is too - a winger. People have turned him into a small forward because he’s 175cm but he’s not a small forward.

I hope we take someone else.

Rioli and Ryan?

Does help that Shuey is pretty darn good on his left foot & Yeo is a weapon in the air.

Both are small forwards. Ian Hill is not.

We have way too many short people as it is.
I

Ian Hill has played the majority of his football as a small forward.
I don’t think I saw him play one game of colts on the wing.
He pinch hits inside as required.
I'm probably half way in between u guys.

Of those 5 - two (Crowden, giro) - Speculative, late picks and may not be on the list come 2020. Matera and Ballas are small forwards and Ballas is in his last year. Not sure who the 5th is.

Selective data is selective.

Neale still shows up as number 0 on our website so he probably included him on accident
Travis Colyer = 175cm

I consider myself little and i’m 177cm. Most of the AFL blokes measure themselves in their boots I reckon.

Obviously a list management strategy to have heaps of really tall guys and heaps of very short guys.

If Ian Hill is best available at our pick 15/16 then go for it. As mentioned above it is likely we will sort out the overweight position we have on the rucks and the miniscules at the end of 2019.

Let’s not get all consumed with just Ian Hill. He might end up being 5th best in our order of preferences available.

Yep. I included Travis Colyer.

Tried to do it by 2019 lists. The numbers would actually be a lot higher if they were 2018 lists as a lot of players under 175cm were delisted.

I somewhat agree with what you’re saying (hence my tongue in cheek Docker73 comment above)

But to be fair not a lot of difference between someone who is my height at 177cm and Travis Colyer at 175cm. With his man bun he probably has me covered.

Anyway if he is best available at our first pick then call his name out. If not call the other blokes name who might 185cm. There are heaps of factors that need to be considered aside from height. What I have seen from Hill 2017/18 (under some Injury duress in 2018) is elite skills. I rate that pretty highly.

I doubt he would make it past WCE first pick (which will end up being 22 or 23).

You are spot on with your midget analysis. It would do my head in going to games and seeing the liability that our short people were.

Walters is the only midget we should have on our list heading into this draft. Poor list management to be dealing with the others.

The games record holder measured in at 1.72 metres, lets move past the point of writing off players due to their height

I don't mind short midfielders so long as they can tackle and slip tackles aka not be bullied by opposition size
ian hill can do both
sometimes as mark twain stated it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog

cal Twomey said hes the fastest player in the draft which saying something with rankine in it
his words were “He’s probably the only player in the pool that could actually kick out and then run to the other end of the ground. No one could catch him, he’s that quick.”

one of the best midfields ever cousins kerr judd had two players below 180 cm
fyfes the kind of player who would protect ian hill in the middle he wouldn't be thrown in the deep end like brayshaw, cerra and banfield have been this year.
hed be developed in wafl then would graduate to small forward then to a midfield position like walters

Bit odd to discount players purely based on height. They're not marking targets, unless you're saying all decent midfielders have to win one out in the air? Walters over McGovern? Waist height for tackles doesn't vary that much. I'd love to understand why you think height makes such a massive difference over other factors.
