Player Watch Pick #18 (2016) - Sam Powell-Pepper

I guess Riley Bonner would be grinding his teeth in annoyance. If SPP does crack the 22 early, plus Monfries comes back, it'll be most/all of the year in the Maggies for Bonner.
KB says that the best piece of advice he was given as a young player was that he had to pick himself.

Would he? He plays a different position to Monfries and SPP, so he has just as much chance of regular games in 2017.

The thing I like most about his interview is that despite his apparent ability to carry the ball, break tackles etc he talks about the feeling of knocking people over.

Can't call it now... Byrne Jones to Powell Peppers, it feels like getting a 2 for 1 deal at Coles.

Pittard needs to reinstate JMP

DBJ to JMP...to SPP ... goal!

Sure. Once the rookie draft is past we will be playing on the 'Name your team for R1' thread (or whatever it will be called) and this sort of stuff will get argued about more. It just popped into my head because of the 'SPP will play R1 ' bravado.

Good. He needs to build up a bit more agro in his game. I like what he has to offer but he does need to step up a bit and demand to get picked. Simply having a nice kick isn't enough.

Wat

If an inside mid and a half forward crack our best 22, that'll equal most of the year in the reserves for one of our half backs.

:drunk:

Bonner is still replacing Stewart/O'Shea

Port have picked up an absolute jet in SPP. I've followed his career since he was a junior at the Mount Hawthorn Cardinals.

Quality kid, huge ticker, strong mark, brutal attack on the contest and a proven goal kicker. Great leadership potential and just refuses to lie down

Don't believe what you hear about his kicking being off. He was the only player to kick 30 from 30 at the combine.

If there is any area of concern - and that's overstating it in a big way, is that his disposal by foot can sometimes be a bit awry, but I put that down to the fact that he just goes flat chat the whole time. if anything, he could just slow down a little bit but good coaching will sort that out. And its a damn site easier to get players to slow down than it is to get them to arc up.

Very, very disappointed that West Coast didn't pick him up at 13.

Putting a bet on now for rookie of the year in 2017.

Thanks for taking the effort to sign up to post that. Would you have any inkling as to how he's likely to adjust away from home and to a full time environment - it seems that he's been pretty committed based on his puppy fat/running/yoga comments.

He actually reminds me alot of a young daniel kerr.

EDIT: Funnily enough, Kerr was taken at pick 18.

That's actually not a bad comparison except that Kerr was a true midfielder whereas SPP I think is more versatile. And unlike Kerr, he's not a complete, arrogant tosser with dubious recreational habits.

I think he'll adjust to Alberton pretty well - he's mature and he's had to face some big challenges in his life but he's benefited from having an outstanding support network.

But with respect, I'm hoping that he gets severely homesick, very quickly and wants to come back to Perth

Richmond-era Matt White is the perfect example of a player who used to have poor kicking until he learned to slow down and compose himself before he kicked it. He's now one of the better ball users in the competition. Hopefully Matt can impart that particular bit of wisdom on SPP, because SPP with kicking skills is a star waiting to happen.
