Can anyone justify why Chapman has Dews spot ?

PS I like Chapman bu fairs fair
U r joking. Where did Dew play on the weekend? Chappy would never be in the 2's. Dew is handy. Chappy is brilliant and close to Cats' mvp! Fair is fair and they are in different leagues.

My effort, based on a combination of 2009 form and proven ability:

B- Sam Gilbert -- Matthew Scarlett -- Tom Harley
HB- Brendan Goddard -- Sam Fisher -- Luke Hodge
C- Joel Selwood-- Sam Mitchell -- Nick Dal Santo
HF- Cyril Rioli -- Nick Reiwoldt -- Jarryd Roughead
F- Steve Johnson -- Lance Franklin -- Stephen Milne
Fol- Brad Ottens -- Jimmy Bartel -- Gary Ablett
IC- Joel Corey -- Lenny Hayes -- Brad Sewell -- Robert Campbell

I think you've included a potential element in their as well because otherwise some o the selection don't make sense.

Enright was AA last year and would be right in the mix this year for AA I'd have him ahead of Gilbert, Corey, Hayes, Sewell and Harley (though different type).

Chapman surely has achieved more in his carreer than Milne and he'd be 2nd in the B&F behind Ablett at this stage though Milne is having a cracker as well. I reckon 9/10 people would take Chapman over Milne and he's clearly ahead of Rioli on any measure though Rioli has massive potential.

Throughout his career and also this year Gardiner has achieved more than Campbell though Cambell offers more in years going forward.

I reckon Milne and Chapman would have to be rated at least the same. Over their careers Chapman has averaged 1.3 goals a game and Milne has averaged 2 goals a game. People forget that Milne kicked 60 goals twice in a season (a brilliant effort from a crumbing forward). Peoples hatred of Milne gets in the way of how good he is at his role.

I'd personally have a forwardline of:

Johnson, Riewoldt, Roughead
Chapman, Franklin, Milne

At this stage I would have Milne over Rioli however it will probably eventually change.

Dew was dropped for disciplinary reasons, not form. But. Chappy is unquestionably a better player. Dew was brilliant and a matchwinner in the GF, but Chapman is probably one of the top 3 players at Geelong this year.

No, he doesnt. This is just a Hawthorn myth.

He is hard at it, but so are most players in the AFL, and opposition players would be far too concerned with their own application at the contest to worry about Campbell Brown being around rather than any other Hawthorn player.

False.

You're right... I wasn't picking this side based on the traditional AA format so much as picking the side most capable of pushing for premierships over an extended period of time... After all that's what all supporters want to see their team do.

In regards to Enright, based on my above selection policy I'd only really drop either Gilbert or Harley for hm because the other three play very diffrent roles. As you mentioned, I do see Gilbert as having more long term upside then Enright and I beleive that at his best Harley is in the top three medium defenders in the league... That said he would be unlcuky to miss if the AA side was named tomorrow, I really admire the way he goes about it.

I'll pay Chapman over Milne, extremely tough choice in the end... Both having absolute blinders at the minute. But yeah, on second thoughts: Chapman by a mosquitos chest hair...

Rioli is a similar case to Gilbert, just can't not select someone with so much potential...

Gardiner has been impressive so far this year but I don't think his form has been outstanding enough to justify choosing him over a bloke who has been solid for the past few seasons. Gardiner has been out of the game a long time and has a way to go yet to prove he is the geuine article in my opinion...

Good points though :thumbsu:

Enright Scarlett Brown
S. Fisher Croad Hodge

Ottens Bartel G. Ablett
Bateman Mitchell Selwood

Chapman Riewoldt S. Johnson
Rioli Franklin Roughead

Int: Koschitzke, Corey, Sewell, Ling

Emergencies: Birchall, Hayes, Gilbert

It was tough.

B: Hudghton (Stk) Scarlett (Geel) Gilbert (Stk)
HB: Hodge (Haw) S.Fisher (Stk) Goddard (Stk)
C: Dal Santo (Stk) Bartel (Geel) Bateman (Haw)
HF: S.Johnson (Geel) Riewoldt (Stk) Chapman (Geel)
F: Roughead (Haw) Franklin (Haw) Rioli (Haw)

Foll: Ottens (Geel) Ablett (Geel) Hayes (Stk)
Int: Gardiner (Stk) Sewell (Haw) Selwood (Geel) Montagna (Stk)

Emg: Mitchell (Haw) Enright (Geel) Koschitzke (Stk)

I see from the above that you barrack for StKilda and don't rate Geelong at all. Good for you!

Alright, this is extremely tough, but here is my opinion:

B: Enright Scarlett Gilbert
HB: Hodge Fisher Goddard
C: Montagna Bartel Mitchell
HF: S Johnson Riewoldt Chapman
F: Roughead Franklin Milne
R: Ottens Ablett Hayes
INT: Gardiner Dal Santo Sewell Rioli
EMERG: Lewis Ling Birchall

In reality, everyone is going to have a different opinion. Nobody is really wrong, 40-45 of players combined from the three lists could all have valid claims at being selected in the 22. This 22 is comprised of a combination of 2009 form, and past history and achievements.

Formidable looking line up, would probably be better than the All-Australian side that will be named.

When it comes to choosing Milne and Chapman I think most coaches in the league would choose Chappy because he can play on ball as well as up forward and is better on both sides of his body.

Although all teams have players that do specialize in an area the game has become such that versatility is highly sort after. Take for example a game where Milne is being shut down by the opposition, what do you do with him? I guess he can run through the middle but he isnt the same caliber as the other midfielders - chappy is.

I would choose Hodge on career, the guy is a gun backman but this year Enright, Gilbert, Goddard and others have been much better as Hodgy is injured. Might still make it though.

I would probably choose Kosi over Campbell again because he can go forward and back, although with Rooey, Roughy and Franklin he probably isnt needed. Gardiner is probably again a better ruck than Campbell and is coming back into his AA form.

I love Rioli, quality player. Dont know how the Hawks and Cats will keep their teams together with the likes of him coming through.

Ling is the most underrated mid in the competition. His ability to shutdown the best in the league is amazing. Will pick an attacking side though!

B: Mackie Scarlett Gilbert
HB: Enright Fisher Goddard
C: Corey Bartel Mitchell
HF: S Johnson Riewoldt Chapman
F: Roughead Franklin Rioli
R: Ottens Ablett Dal Santo
INT: Gardiner Hayes Sewell Ling
EMERG: Lewis Milne Birchall

Good thread and most people have had a fair crack at it but lol at anyone rating Milne or Dew above Chapman. Deluded. When fit, Chapman, is awesom, can play as a damaging forward or on the ball, steps up in the big games. Should have had the Norm Smith in '07.

Double lol at the deluded hawks who want Campbell Brown in the side. The backman who couldn't even get a gig in the backline last year...

I reckon the 3rds in this team would beat the bottom 4 this year and take down a couple of others. Some names in theb 3rds: Dawson, Kelly, Muston, Tuck, Dempster, Armitage, McEvoy, Mumford, Steven, Ray... Have named maily Saints cos i don't know enough of the bottom level players from the other 2. I'll plug in a 3rds, see if someone else can add to it - can add and change as see fit.

FB: Ray, Dawson, Dempster
HB: R Clarke, --. --
C: Armitage. --, --
HF: Lynch, --, --
