Dixon, Watts, and Marshall are all better KPFs than Howard. So if people are insisting on him being a forward: he plays SANFL.

Having him as a KPD gives us that flexibility of chucking him up forward for a spell to mix things up or if Dixon goes down mid game with an injury.

No one to my knowledge has ever said Howard should be taken out of the back lines and placed forward

I’m not sure where the idea that there is these people advocating for that comes from.

1. Before he was brought into the side and given a run in the back lines people did call for him to be brought in and played forward

This wasn’t because anyone thought he was a better forward that chb, it was because we had Trengove failing to impact games as a forward and Dixon fighting against a lot of attention while we had a talented young kpp who could be getting development games in the afl side.

This was before we had watts and Marshall looked some ways off getting selected.

I was one of those that wanted him to come in, not because I thought he should or would be a better forward, but because we needed a forward, he looked more capable than the option we had, and I’m really really pro- developing kpps in the league side when we can. Those of you that watched the Maggie’s would remember he wasn’t being played as a chb in the sanfl side, he played a different spot every week, even in games.

2. I’ve seen people mention him being used as a forward but not in the context as a positional shift but rather as an in game option. Ie he looks more capable to swing forward if we needed someone to do that than clurey/hombsch/jonas if the need arose.

I think this is where the confusion is coming from.

How many times do I have to tell you I'm not an advocate?

Situations evolve. Between the 8 goals for the Maggies and a few promising cameos forward in the seniors (the clutch goal on 3QT against the Dogs in 2016 stands out) he did look like a viable second forward option once it became obvious the coaches had drawn a line through Eddy.

Now he looks like the most dynamic key defensive prospect since Alex Rance.

What a shame.

Dougal is probably already better defensively than Rance. Rance's strength is his ability to peel off and intercept - but if his team's having a dirty day or particularly his defenders aren't helping him out, he can get badly exposed a la Jenkins last thursday.

If Dougs can learn to peel off and intercept mark... hoo boy.

He was a very effective intercept marker at SANFL level. No reason he can’t bring that to AFL level as he continues to gain experience and confidence.

To think he's played a total of 12 AFL
games. There's more upside to come that's for sure. A scary prospect for opposition teams

And only 6 as a defender. Yet he’s already broken the all-time one percenters record. Twice.

People on here were definitely crying out for him to be bought in as a forward against Brisbane in Round 13 last year after he kicked 8 against Wests and there were definitely melts when that didn't happen.

Sometimes, the coaches do know more than we do.
Recruited on the back of playing as a CHF/FF checkout his highlights clip back in 2014.
We trialled/trained him in ruck as well. In another universe Logan Austin might have cemented CHB leaving Dooogz as a fwd.
With Butch out of favour Eddy not enjoying Ken's confidence Dooogz future direction was pretty fluid.
Our game v Norwood at the Parade that we won by a kick Logan Austin was playing fwd at times.
The way things have panned out has not always been about the coaches knowing more than we do ...... of course they do just
doesn't make them faultless. Things have turned out great and Dooogz'll get better just like Marshall will.

Interesting that Ken called him "Doug" in his post match. Mentioned already by someone. But interesting to hear Ollie call him "Doug" too in his interview, so I presume that is his nickname that the boys use.

Doogs is better imo:)

And these are genuine "impact the contest" 1%ers, coming off his direct opponent to help team defence, or staying right on his opponent and effecting the spoil / tackle.
Not the "oh dear Ive been caught ball watching and now I have to make a desperate attempt to get to the contest otherwise Ive conceded a soft possession / mark / goal" type spoil.

Hard to get away from a fast jet with a 200cm wing span, it would be a forward worst nightmare, that reach!

The boys do call him Doug... However Doooooooooogs will never die in the crowd.
Is that Dug as in Doug Hawkins or
Doog as in Dougal ?
