Pick 6 - Who to take?

i can see it now.... (in Andy D voice)

"Pick 4. Greater Western Sydney. Player #231234.... Will Hoskin-Elliott"
"Pick 5. Greater Western Sydney. Player #223213.... Billy Longer"
"Pick 6. Port Adelaide. Player #2376343... Other, Specify in post"
"Pick 7. Greater Western Sydney. Player #311232.... Chad Wingard"

Top ten is still reverse order isn't it? So unless Wingard is taken AFTER our pick (like in the scenario you suggest), we won't know if we've got him until the announcement is made.

Top 10 is stupid. What is wrong with having the number #1 pick getting their name called out first?!

When are they going to realise that fans really don't care who gets pick one but actually who falls to THEIR club. Hence working from one down is actually much more suspenseful.

Tall, fast, agile, good overhead mark, dancing around opponents, kicking long goals and hitting teammates lace out?

Really?

All I'm saying is a good highlights vid does not a good player make.

Cale Mortons highlights were him getting cheap possessions on the back flank, and delivering well. He doesn't look nearly as impressive as Hoski-Elliot. That said, Cale Morton is still very young and could become a very good player yet.

WHE's are him taking pack marks and INSTANTLY kicking it long to the right spots. That torp from 60 odd was brilliant too. He also has highlights of him running a long way and delivering it lace out. He looks like a bloody brilliant player.

One of the main lessons Hoskin-Elliott took from the championships came in the match against South Australia in Adelaide, where he played on Nick Amato.

"Normally no one keeps up with me; he just ran with me the whole game," Hoskin-Elliott said

With an opponent matching him for speed and endurance, the Vic Metro star resolved to develop an inside game so that he had more avenues towards getting the footy.

This bit concerned me about WHE. He has been able to simply outrun his opponents at junior level and hence get easy, outside ball. He is going to lose that advantage at AFL level against opponents who can keep up with him .

Can he handle that?

should be an option for best midfielder left after gws pillage.

well general concensus seems to throw up 8 names for the top 6 spots,

patton, coniglio lock for top 3,

with tyson, longer, buntine, wingard, hoskin-elliott and kavvanagh.

longer has to be a lock for top 5. so that is 3 definite picks.

leaving tyson, wingard, hoskin-elliott, buntine and kavvanagh, five players and they have 2 more picks. so we should have a choice out of some combination of 3 of those players.

all of those players are quality. i dont consider any of them us being anything other than a win to pick up a player of that quality,

however, im very much hoping we dont pick up buntine ( flanker/ midfielder), kavvanagh ( very good but has had injuries).

obviously wingard ( homegrown talented midfielder) is my hope and ild suspect the clubs as well but hoskin-elliott and tyson would offer us something we need.

i think gws have alot of good inside ball winners already and will be looking for speed/ x-factor mids. i strongly suspect that despite our hopes that wingard will be there for us that it may go this way.

gws 1-5 patton, coniglio, longer, hoskin-elliott, wingard,

6 port, tyson/ kavvanagh

7 gws buntine/ kavvanagh

this lets them get an awful lot of talent on their list, some very good run there and miss out on tyson but they have coniglio, scully, shiels and ward who are all very good on-ballers with speed and delivery on the wings with golds, treloar, hoskin-elliott and wingard.

our best bet is probably if kavvanagh or buntine push their way into the top 5 ( particularly kavvy if they think we may take him if wingard is gone).

i do wonder if they would leave wingard to us knowing then who we will pick and allowing them to play around that?? leaves them feeling quite safe about whichever player they want to take at 7. but i suppose if they really want wingard than they will take him.

anyway, if i had to rank my preference it would go like this

wingard>hoskin-elliott>>tyson>>kavvanagh>>>>> longer>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

>>>>>>>>>>>> greene>>>>>>>>>>>>

>>>>>>>>>> buntine/ sumner>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

>>>>>>>>>>>>crozier.>>>>>>>> wtf????

If Wingard is there would love him, otherwise Taylor Adams really intrigues me. From Knightmare's Mock Draft..

#10 GWS - Taylor Adams (VIC – Mid/Fwd)
Height: 181cm, Weight: 80kg, DOB: 20/09/1993
Recruited from: Geelong Falcons
Style: Nathan Foley
Player comparison:
Range: 5-20
Profile: Really impressive inside midfielder. Has really good pace and agility. Has great burst speed and moves really well. Don’t think he would look out of place at AFL level now to be honest. Seems that class above. Good tackling ability. Stands up strongly in tackles and has the strength to break away. Strong mark and can use his body well in marking contests to beat his man which gives him so forward potential as well as midfield potential. Has a great work ethic and is a future leader at whichever club he lands at. His handball ability even under pressure is very good. Looks like an immediate fit who can play at the next level sooner rather than later.

OK, but look at what is and isn't said.

Almost the entirety of his talking up is based on his physical attributes. Speed, pace, movement, uses body well. But watch his highlights and the thing I'm not seeing is particularly smart football. As far as disposal, he looks overly reliant on his handball, using his kick only as an inaccurate punt to space - pretty much like a young Simon Goodwin.

He's also not an easy pick because he's 181cm and 80kg - thats a powerful combo against 17/18 year olds, so sure he is a machine at junior level as it puts you at a good level for power compared to the competition. But at AFL level you need something more to bring to the table, because thats an unexceptional combo. The most comparable current player that I can see would be Sam Mitchell and he had to do some hard yards to even get drafted. Hell, even Knightmare compares him to Nathan Foley, who is an OK player but again he came through the rookie list.

TL;DR: He's probably too vanilla to go top 6, or top ten even. You would really want to see something exceptional, because every elite AFL player needs an edge.

All good

Tyson has terrific peripheral vision and a good skill to pin point at an early age. I believe Tyson will be a star one day because he has 0.30seconds more than everyone else.
Tyson is light years ahead of the others

I rate him ahead of Wingard who himself looks smooth and I'd be happy with him but he just doesn't have the X-factor in comparison, although he appears to have supreme endurance so young which is outstanding

I certainly like WHE as well. He goes in and gets the ball and has a terrific kick on him that would put him top 5 in our club

Tyson > WHE >> Wingard

But do you take a star future Ruckman every time if he is there? I would

Longer then Tyson > WHE >> Wingard

Can I also add, how good will it be next year when we have picks #1 & 4!

True enough Porthos but in that brief clip he also shows he has good awareness in traffic and quick/clean hands. Would be a reach at 6, but his hardness and ability to win clearances really stood out at the U18 Championship.

I'd prefer Wingard or Tyson but if there gone, I think he would be a better fit than WHE.

I think Adams showed he's proficient at set plays, but that part where he gets the ball and runs forward in a group of guys going forward, but gets run down and has to do a dump pass...not great.

Oh and boydman, we won't get a pick earlier than #2 next year. GWS will tank it more than Gold Coast, and they will probably have another dip also, and there will probably be another serial tanker like Melbourne trying to get in early on the superdraft.

IF we get a priority pick it will come before the first round aka #1. If Gold Coast and/or Brisbane also qualify for a priority pick, it comes down to ladder position at the end of the year.

So if GWS finish bottom, but we win less than 4.5 games, we'll get the number one pick. If we finsih with less than 4.5 wins but GC and/or Brisbane do as well and are below us, our priority pick will follow theirs.

Nope. 17th wouldn't surprise me, but there's no way we'll finish below GWS. They'll make 2011 GC look like 2011 Geelong. Probably won't win a game, even if they don't tank, which they probably will.

The only way we'd get the No. 1 pick is if GC win more than 5 games and we don't, in which case we'd be 1 and 3.

There will be no need to talk about priority picks in the second half of the season.:thumbsu:

Actually, we'd get No.1 pick if we finished lower than GC and finished with 4 or less wins. So if we win 3 and they win 4, we would get pick 1. It doesn't matter about where GC finish as long as we finish lower.
