Pick 61 - Dom Barry

I just wished he kicked that goal in the first, Watts Motlop and then Barry kick our first 3 goals of the season...oh boy!
All of those goals from Watts Motlop and Marshall had me scratching my head to remember who our actual goal kickers were over the past 2 years.
Having these fellas in now feels like having Schulz back :) Losing him was massive.
It felt like we were constantly playing with one hand behind our back previously.

Dom is a great story. Melbourne picked him up in the 2012 "minidraft" (remember them?) from St. Pat's Ballarat as "steak knives" in the Jesse Hogan deal. They expected that it might take a few years before he could hold down a regular AFL spot. He's now probably at the top end of where Melbourne expected he'd be at this stage of his career, but of course he's done a whole lot more with his life in the meantime. And clearly there's a lot of upside still to come.

Last night I reread my review of the Rd 1 SANFL game at Glenelg Oval under lights last year as I remember being super impressed by Dom's pace in that game but had no idea of his AFL history. Amazing how much things change in 12 months.

I didn't know his name at the time. Iirc might had to ask you at the time "who is that guy".
I remember in the 2nd 1/2 when the Bays were pulling away from us their crowd in and in front of the stands were
really up n about. It wasn't easy that night listening to those mofo's and boy did they enjoy it or what ..... campaigners.

The Dom Barry I remember from Melbourne didn’t have anywhere near the freak running capacity of this incarnation. That’s a huge credit to him and how hard he must have worked to earn this second chance.
he grew up from about 12 years of age in Bendigo/Ballarat, don't discredit what heat training does to ones Aerobic Capacity, training in Central Australia for 2 years would have done plenty! I am surprised with Burgo's love for Dubai the club hasn't done more stuff regarding training camps here in Alice

Lack of facilities. We went to Dubai because there were 2 world class AIS / State institute type facilities there that we used over the 2 preseason camps.

If it was just heat we are worried about, we could spend 8-10 in Coober Pedy, Oodnadatta etc

Shame Port can't build one in Alice. It could be something like MLB clubs have in Arizona and Florida.

It gets up to 45 Celsius in Adelaide during the summer. We have plenty of heat to work with :).

Exactly. I mean we don't want our players spontaneously combusting.

I know, but I was thinking it could be tied up with the indigenous program. Port's presence there would draw attention, I imagine.

[On a side note, if SA doesn't want to contribute, perhaps NT could step in. ;-) ]

Adelaide has plenty of hot days between 30 and 40 degrees so there is plenty of heat. Training camps are more about bonding so you do them where you have facilities and if you want heat go where there is heat.

A decade ago altitude training became all the rage and half a dozen clubs were going to Arizona, Utah etc for mountain altitude training but based themselves at a US college close to the mountains so they could use their facilities when not climbing mountains.

Port dont have the money or need to build anything in Alice Springs.

28 degrees is hot enough to stress a player. Go dig a trench 2m deep 2m wide and 20m long and I bet you will get plenty of heat stress at that tempature. 45 degrees will probably kill you.

We went to Dubai in late northern hemisphere autumn not mid summer. We went there for a combo of the bonding, the facilities and consistency of heat ie most days were between 25-28 degrees, the humidity was high a lot higher than Adelaide and nights were around 20 degrees. The temperature was consistent. Adelaide early December can have cool days low 20's, low humidity and drop 10 degrees at night and then 4 days later we have 4 days in a row of 30-35 degree weather.

Adelaide's weather is just like here, then. Nice!

Dont forget, its the humidity that is just as important as the heat. When a player trains in a combination of heat and humidity, when he sweats he requires that sweat to evaporate in order to cool off, which requires energy. This evaporation dramatically slows down when humid, which forced the body to sweat more, work harder, and pump more blood closer to skin surface to cool off. The player has to work harder, train harder, thus elevating thresholds, and upon returning to "normal" conditions back home, continues training to those higher thresholds, giving him/her a slight % edge. Heat without the humidity is useless.

Adelaide does have many days between 30 and 40 degrees for sure, Alice as a rule has 9 months between 38 and 44 degrees, dropping to 34 or 36 over night. ;)

NT Gov love tossing cash at sport!

Ain't going to happen.
As REH pointed out our off season is in the wrong time of the year to use the NT.
