Pretty much 4 major things that can flip the entire look of the team - If Rogers, Haddin and Harris all retire and if Doolan/Marsh can hold form.

Gonna go a head and say Harris will play after his surgery, Pakistan/India spin will get the better of Rogers and Haddin will retire on his own terms after the WC.

Thus:

Hughes
Warner
Watson
SMarsh
Clarke
Smith
Wade
Johnson
Harris
Siddle
Lyon

Faulkner
Bird
Pattinson
Doolan
Silk/Lynn/Maddinson

Paines not coming back because Nevills form and captaincy is making him the better option, for the back up position at least. If Cummins is fit to play Shield next season, mark my words he will be taken apart. Starc same ol'. Outside of the Golden Trio only Bird and Patto are really up to not getting flogged at Test level.

Could be anything. Would be good if he kept scoring shield runs so we wouldn't have to bring the likes of Henriques on tour.

If he finishes this season strongly with the bat they'll take him to the UAE as the all rounder. That way they can play the two spinners and keep Johnson, Harris and Siddle all in the side.

Been a Doolan fan for a while now. Marsh might've cemented himself and Hughes might not ever.

Here's what I'd predict for England considering Marsh's resurgence and the fact that I don't think Hughes is gonna make it…

Warner
Maddinson
You realise there's only one more Sheffield Shield season between now and this series, right?

off topic but when do we play Pakistan in tests? and is that our last test series for the year, it seems like ages since we played the west indies and the kiwis as well

Warner
Hughes
Doolan
S Marsh
Clarke
Smith
Wade
Johnson
Pattinson
Siddle
Lyon

Bird
Faulkner
Nevill
Maxwell
Watson/Silk/Lynn/Maddinson

Only question is Wade and Pattinson for mine. Is Wade good enough? Do we pick Pattinson if Bird is tearing it up? Hughes will interesting as well.
Bird is the natural replacement for Siddle, Pattinson for Harris and Starc for Johnson (when we get to that stage)

Um, yes...
So what do you think Maddinson is going to need to do between now and the middle of next year to open in the Ashes?

Averaging 35 in the current season so it's not like he's pressing his case currently.

I'm basing this on watching cricket with my eyes. Maddinson has the game to succeed at test level. Don't particularly care what his FC average is. Guy can seriously bat.

Would be very surprised if he doesn't absolutely destroy the shield next year.

Needs to calm down a fair bit though. Gets out to aggresive nothing shots far too often.

Needs to go to 4 IMO.

I don't want Hughes in the side,

I'd be keeping him at #1 for the time being. Selectors should be in his ear about "Rogers only having so much time" etc.

Agree he has some things to work on, but I'd be very surprised if next year isn't his breakout year.

Silk is the natural replacement for Bucky because he compliments Warner much better than Maddinson who can also bat at 4. If Dave ****s up again and misses out then Maddinson opening

That's fair and tbh I haven't seen much of Silk at all. I'd still have Maddinson opening in FC though. He's so organised and compact, shot selection is generally spot on, and he leaves the ball well.

Wade would have to improve a lot. The standard of fielding has been so high recently, having a poor keeper would bring the whole side down. Plus Lyon would end up in and out of the side again as he is very dependent on good catching behind the pegs.

OK. For a second, let's base it on his performance. He's going to need to score a shitload of runs next season to force his way into the Test side.

Don't particularly care what his FC average is.
In other words, you consider his actual performance to date to be irrelevant.

Would be very surprised if he doesn't absolutely destroy the shield next year.
OK, great. You're clearly a very considered fellow.

Look, stop being a toss.

Basically the thread is predict a team to play ages away. I think Maddinson has the game to be a test player. That's all there is to it. I've watched him bat. I also know that it's very rare for someone in their late teens/early twenties to average 50+, but also that around Maddinson's age players get their game together and hit their straps.

If you consider 18 months to be "ages away".

Maddinson is 22 now. He'll be 23 by the Ashes. So hardly an eon.

Not really. The question is whether he will be in the Test side for the Ashes.

Otherwise the thread would be "List players who could play Test cricket at some point".
