Seemed like Schulz and Butch both were content to wrestle their opponents, to no effect. Granted our gameplan of bombing it rather than kicking to any sort of advantage leads to this kind of activity.

This is the reason IMO why we get relatively few free kicks also. You get them when defenders have to panic when they are beaten on a lead, rather than the pack situations that unfold with our 1980s playing style.

Our forward entries consisted mainly of kicking it into an empty forward fifty.

Sure, but under this arrangement at least Dixon works hard up the ground to at least provide a contest.
Anyway, Butcher had his opportunities yesterday to provide a contest in front of goal and went in half hearted, including one particularly soft effort at the top of the goal square from a Kane Mitchell kick. Had that been Daniel Stewart or Damon White half this board would be volunteering personally to help him clean out his locker.

A good point and a catch22 that the Coach's game plan should fix. That catch 22 is, you won't get hit on the chest if you do not lead but what is the point in leading if the ball is continually bombed in high? Hinkley has to sort this out.

You are right it doesn't seem to matter if it is Butcher up front or Dixon up front they appear content to stand and attempt a pack mark. Normally Schultz gets a few on the lead but he is still not right. I guess it gets down to a game plan with some system where midfielders deliver the ball to leading players occasionally. In 2013 and 2014 when we had Richardson and Walsh working with Ken to manage the midfield we did this. Now, with Voss and Hart we simply bomb it into our tall forwards.

I am not a great Butcher fan but I felt sorry for him yesterday. The poor bastard waits all year for a chance then when he does get picked he has a terrible day for a tall forward to operate in and midfielders who make the situation worse by kicking the ball to a forward contest. On that score I think Ken has to stick with Butcher next week.

Seriously anyone cutting our tall forwards slack needs to go back and watch Dixon’s game against richmond.

They aren’t good enough without Charlie, and we need to find players that are.

Do our forwards even know how to lead anymore? I know its wet but fk me. Get out in front and take the damn thing on your chest.

Schulz did once, and Boak actually lowered his eyes to find him, in like, the last minute of the game.

Ken was furious.

Damon White played 55 games. Ample opportunity to prove his worth.

Daniel Stewart played 36 games. He was drafted the same year as Butcher and hasn't been on the list for 3 seasons, yet somehow has still has played more games. Once again ample opportunity.

This is what gets me. Butcher finally comes in for one game and because he doesn't set the world on fire against a top 4 team in a monsoon people are calling for him to be delisted. Where's his ample opportunity?

It may very well turn out that he's not up to it, but let's at least give him the chance to prove otherwise.

One last comparison. Jack Watts. Probably the only player in the whole league more maligned than Butcher. Drafted one year beforehand in 2008, but has played 103 more games (132 games total). He's only just starting to show some consistent form as an AFL forward.

We all like a good laugh at Melbourne's expense, but they've got something right that we haven't here by perservering with Watts and are now seeing some results.

Great post.

We can't develop a tall forward to save ourselves. 20 years after developing the last and we are still waiting.

Gotta give them a chance.

The other mobs history with key forwards isn't exactly great either, they've just kept drafting and trying again whilst we haven't
True but since a certain Port man went there I can hardly find a fail amongst any of their shit picks, probably as all were given chances.

Thinking that's where things started going wrong for me.

Our forwards coach is a ******* imbecile. That much is obvious.
How much is the forwards coach and how
much is Hinkley? The defense is more of an isolated unit, having to react to the opposition (although these days all players need to help defend), but the forwards are at the mercy of the midfield setup and entries. Hinkley would have the ultimate say about structure (ha ha!), but the forward coaches have been shit at getting the best from the players up forward. Thumbs down all round there.

We arnt drafting ANY though. Small sample size.

We have drafted a few, they just weren't been developed properly, weren't good enough or are still works in progress.

White
Salter
Butcher
Stewart
Shaw
Harvey
Howard

That's a few bites of the draft cherry. Trading has been quieter but a bit more successful for us.

Schulz
Clolke
Dixon

2 out of 3 ain't bad.
