A modest Ansett Cup win over the reigning wooden spooner is hardly likely to strike fear among supporters of rival teams, but as a long-suffering Pies fan, I’ll accept any win, thank you very much.

Chris Tarrant was really our only ray of hope last year, and tonight he was a joy to behold. It was great to see Molloy in the action too, particularly in the second half. We desperately need some creative forward work, and there were a few promising signs tonight.

As for St.Kilda … their fans need not reach for the cyanide bottle just yet. Sure, they were diabolical tonight, but the season is very young. And their coach is as cunning as a shit-house rat. I’m sure after a few more dismal efforts, he’ll throw one of his legendary tantrums and get them going.

Great crowd. 30,000 or so. And a terrific atmosphere … particularly at the Collingwood barrackers’ end. The newly revamped Cheer Squad sounded quite impressive at times.

Did anyone listen when Collingwood supporters told the world we would win? As is always the case they didn't. I am looking forward to the excuses that the saints fans and others will come up with. You can be sure that only a very few people will say that the Saints were just not good enough.I would never blame a Collingwood loss on injuries no matter who was out of the side. We have right now had one more win in this comp than any other side. Too easy.

Once our skills lift a bit that running game plan of ours will rip many a team apart.

It felt great today when we went into the forward fifty and there were multiple targets.

Should have won by ten goals, but the umpie had a few set shots for the 'aints midway through the last term!

Like I said before and I'll say it again; Chris Tarrant will be an absolute-star. He has the potential to kick 100 goals in the Matthew Lloyd vain. His kicking lets him down a bit sometimes though.

I owe "Stunning" Steve McKee an apology for an earlier remark (he was pretty good!) and Wakelin was damn near the best Saint on the park (former or present).

Oh yeah, a Nathan Buckley had a couple of kicks and I think that he might have a future in this game.

Steven Mckee, is, according to the best traditions of our game, a march champion. Plays well in the pre-season comp, but does little to nothing for the rest of the year. If he plays more than 10 games for Collingwood this year, i would be surprised to say the least.

Well, clearly the Ansett Cup and the day premiership have been decided. Collingwood were awesome against one of the weakest sides in the comp. They will definitely win more games this year.
Starting to look a bit like last year really - will probably fizzle out by April then.

Look if Collingwood fans did not think that the world (and it doesn't) revolve around them, then perhaps not as many neutral fans wouldn't hang crap on them. My friend starting talking about collingwood flags after rnd 3 last year, and they ended up finishing 2nd last for the year. They are in for a big let down, as once again, they will prove to be a false prophet and fail to deliever the goods. The talent isn't there Collingwood face the facts.

What apalling syntax.

And what, might I ask, is a "neutral fan"? Sounds like an oxymoron to me.

Is this what the once proud Collingwood empire has been reduced too ? Grovelling and boasting over one 'meaningless'practise match - yes i am devaluing your win because at the end of the day, collingwood has not one single premiership point in the bank. St.Kilda played shockingly, and i honestly doubt if they even tried. Mal Blight has been known not to give a contential about pre-season matches.

I didn't see much from either team to suggest that they will play a significant role over the full year. I must agree that Tarrant is looking pretty good and has class written all over him. I was also impressed with Beatham? from the Saints.

Get a grip everyone. On win doesn't make a winter and neither does a loss mean long days ahead. Its only February!!!

For those long suffering Saint supporters, remember the Crows in 1997 lost 4 of their first 6 games and went to win the premiership in Blights first year (also Geelong played off in the GF in Blights first year as well).

To Collingwood fans. Seen this all before and we will see it all yet again.

i have to admit coll looked pretty good last night with their running game but their problem will always be keeping their opponents from kicking a score less than thiers.their spine is nothing to crow about when u look at it closely as for the saints do be too dis heartened by last nights result.you have a new coach and it may take a few games to get the game plan set in the players mind.
cheers!

Whenever we won a 'little' match, and opposition bagged us : 'It's a preseason match', 'it was low opposition' etc ...

My usually reply would be : Well, its better winning it that losing it.

Pies fans should rub it in wherever possible. I would have. Saints fans would have.

it is the middle of february. last night the pies played better footy than the saints and are obviously more forward in their preparation for the season. why would anyone bother making excuses for a practice game? as a saints supporter i'm a little concerned that last night looked very similar to every game last year. i'm hoping by about round 8 or so there will be a significant improvement in the execution of a game plan and the saints move up the ladder. any improvement before then will be a bonus. i haven't forgotten how painful a season of only two wins is yet, if the saints can win 8-10 games and be in the mix, that will be a huge step for us. any more wins than that will be the miracle the press keep writing about. i will still hang on the the positive fact that we have a lot of players to come into the side and blight will eventually get the team to gel and play a decent brand of footy. hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.

I was very disappointed last night. I'm sick to death of losing. However, like Alf said, I'm not about to reach for the cyanide bottles just yet.

We were playing against a side that were far too good for us on the night. The final margin of 3 goals flattered us a great deal.

One of the things that disappointed me more than the final result was the lack of application shown by Peter Everitt. It is one thing to be beaten on the night but it's another to put your head down and not apply yourself. Hopefully Blighty will be able to turn him from a confidence player to a consistent player.

Most people won't agree but I thought Hamill was fantastic. True, he didn't take too many marks and kick too many goals. But what he did do was ferociously attack the ball, chase the opposition, shepard his teammates and other one percenters. Something Spider could learn. Of the rest of the team, Cadyn Beetham, Lenny Hayes and Chad Davis all showed a bit.

It goes without saying that players like Harvey, Gehrig and Lawrence will strengthen the side. And along with the early draft picks Koschitzke and Riewoldt who will get their chance later in the season, things are not too bad.

Congratulations to Collingwood though. Far too good on the night and surprised a lot of people.

Good effort Sainter, for me personally this is what is pissing me off the most, a lot of these guys just refuse to give any respect to the Pies.

We'll suprise a lot more teams this year.

On a serious note, Is Tony Shaw associated with Collingwood at all this year, maybe going back as runner or as a mentor somehow? I wasn't too sure If he was still around at the club for this year or will be concentrating on media committments.

I don't think Tony Shaw is involved any way at all. Tony has been a bit "against" Collingwood of late, I believe/think it has something to do with Mick Malthouse axing ALL hhe players/rookies he recruited during his time at Collingwood.

To Sainter, Alf & Mobbenfurher; bloody well put.
Unfortunately the ******* maggies deserved to win on the night. Those buggers have every right to enjoy a win, just like almost everybody has a right to enjoy a bummer loss

It hurts to write, but good to see Shags Wakelin play well, I suspect he's still got a fair bit of good footy left in him.

Next week Sainters.
