Pike - The one we need

All these quotes from the 1989 GF ! I got to get a hold of this - I've got the picture of Leon, Mick and Ross holding up the cup.

If it's possible to get a VHS copy, I'll pay big time.

BTW What Martin P needs is LOVE and acceptance - I reckon he'll be a gun. I can see Akers, CS(cott) and Pike fixing those Bomber big noting forwards with steely stares sowing the seeds of fear and doubt.

May the spirit of '89 live on !

Hey all you FITZROY maniacs!!!

I have a copy of that 1989 Reserves GF on tape. (on VHS!).

Not only did we win, but the fights are great too!! Doc Wheildon gives out a couple of absolute rippers, as does D.Lupson, G.Osborne, R.Thornton (of all players!), R.Bolzon gives out a top hit on some Geelong nut.

If anyone is looking for a copy, e-mail me on p.olm@ugrad.unimelb.edu.au and I'll see what I can do!

BTW Pike will be great!

Don't waste your breath (or typing fingers) on arguing over the guy now. Wait and see what happens. My bet is he will stuff up, but not for 6 months or so.

Anyone thought of running a book on this one?

If you all you Lions fans really believe that Pike will be a better player, in Brisbane because his wife is expecting a child. Think again, he already has a son about 3 years old, and it didn't stop him playing up off the field at North.

When i first saw this thread title i thought it was a reference to the post-Leigh era. Anyone know how Pike is doing with his current coaching role? Is he still down at Mornington? Was it mornington?

I'm on the same wavelength, Dr Pea. Would love to see him back with us in a coaching role. Steely in his approach to the game and a terrific mentor to the younger guys. I reckon he was the best surprise recruit of all time.
(I think he was still coaching Hastings (?) this year.)

Know what I like most about this old thread?

The good old days you had everyone just responding in kind to posts without having to copy what they're responding too. I'm sick of everyone just copying another post so we have to read everything twice or three times and taking up valuable space.

Love this thread though!:thumbsu:

Yeah that really sucks... :D

Some food for thought for the Doomsayers. ;)

You have got to be joking, what do we need a player who has been delisted for off field behaviour problems.
I don't care that he is an ex roy.He has serious problems. Why burden ourselves with more problems.

What are you guys on.
He may be a good, not great player.
We need a disruptive off filed player like we need a hole in the head.
We need cohesion, not another year of continual off field problems
As for the rubbish about him being settled now, because his girlfriend is pregnant, pleeeease. They are due next month, his delisting from North was the end of this year, his off field behaviour this last season was poor. He was an expectant father then as he is now.
Pike will only gethis act together if he wants to. He should have professional guidance.Plus no freebies at Adrenalin or Rowers.

A note of concern, Lions.

If Pike is 'reformable', why would North have just dropped him with NO trades ? North aren't overly endowed with resources so something BIG must have happened or been said.

I suspect he will play some solid games and then the coach will get the early morning phone call from some lock-up, asking for assistance. And then what ?

2000 Martin Pike:

Age - 28
Matches in 2000 - 20
Off-field controversies - alcohol, arriving late to compulsory sessions
2001 Brisbane Lions premiership window - wide open
Reason for shaved head - baldness

2008 Ben Cousins:

Age - 30
Matches in 2008 - 0
Off-field controversies - substance abuse, avoidance of booze bus, involvement with underworld figures, charged with possession of prohibited drug
2009 Brisbane Lions premiership window - open the smallest crack
Reason for shaved head - ?????

2000 Martin Pike:
2001 Brisbane Lions premiership window - wide open

Not so sure I can agree. We were pretty disappointing in 2000 and would have only been rated an "in the mix" chance of making the finals. Essendon had swept all before them in 2000 and were premiership favourites for pretty much all of the 2001 season (and rightly so, as they still did manage to finish on top of the ladder after a very good season). It wasn't until we got on a massive streak of wins that people started to think of us as a premiership contender (perhaps the win over Collingwood at the MCG might have been the point where people thought we might be in with a show - but a lot of our own supporters still didn't rate us a show against Essendon even late in the season!).

I actually think there are some similarities between where we were back at the end of 2000 to where we are now. On both occasions, we have underperformed, despite being in positions to do better with the list of players that we've had and various good patches of form throughout the year. Both seasons really saw us put in some insipid performances when it counted, leaving observers wondering whether or not the desire and determination required to be successful were really present in the team.

Likewise, the team of 2000 had a great list of midfielders and small/mid-sized players, but seriously lacked in tall players, namely enough ruck options, a centre-half-forward, a key defender and another tall utility who could be thrown into the mix. With the return of Keating, and the additions of Brown, Michael and Pike into the team, we covered those deficiencies very effectively.

Our team of 2008 is almost the reverse. We've probably got a good enough list of options for key position players to be up there with the teams like Geelong and Hawthorn, however, outside of Black, we have virtually no-one of top-quality note in the midfield in comparison to these teams.

Whether or not the addition of someone like Cousins proves to be a good option or not, I don't think the difference between the Lions of 2000 and the Lions of 2008 is all that great, to be honest. Although I predict that Voss may need a year to fully get a grip of things, I'd certainly be hoping that he views the strengths on our list as being something that is capable of building a successful side on over the next 2-3 years.
