ESPN's Brooke Pryor writes Steelers undrafted rookie RB Jaylen Warren looks like he has "real staying power."

"Warren isn’t just a flash in the pan," Pryor writes. "Preseason games will be a big indicator." Warren did not test well at the Combine, but he produced a 256-1,216-11 line in his final college season and looked like a solid back. With no established answers behind Najee Harris on the depth chart, Warren could earn the backup job with a big August.

Our defense has room for improvement tho. Some drives and sequences they look a bit shoddy
Oh 100%. Stopping the run looks to be yet again our biggest issue. I know we lacked some key players on defence, especially the ones up front such as Hayward, Alualu, TJ, Highsmith etc but it looked the same old story on the ground. Myles Jack was flashing around and will be a good addition to this group

ILB corp is our biggest weakness, why our run D is so bad given our front 3 are beasts, double gapping, that means the ILBs are the issue. Myles Jack a very good addition, even if the Jaguars wanted to get rid of him, we've often turned such players around, great coaching/teaching. Devin Bush is a bust so far. Spillane etc are mediocre depth.

Do you trust Pickett (and Rudolph) enough this early?
They all have looked very good. Its tough, and we dont need three. Rudolph has fought hard last season and this camp to make a claim, and not afraid to go vertical. But he probably has less trade value than Trubisky. Investing a #20 on Pickett he's gonna start week 1 or week 4, so Trubisky is the expendable one given hes the presumed starter

Another pre season game and another impressive performance from Pickett in my eyes. I admit I was skeptical on Pickett when we drafted him as I wanted us to go down the OL path but he has done everything he could so far in the two hit outs. The way he stood in the pocket on a couple of those throws on the weekend with the rush coming at him and delivering the ball right on the money is nothing to sneeze at. Even his TD throw to DJ which got called back due to offsetting penalties was a great piece of play. I think Trubisky still starts for us, but geez has Kenny made it a bigger competition than many would have envisioned

On another note, that OL is just horrible to watch. I think I could be double teamed by a couple of our starters and I’d get to the QB no sweat. Just dreadful. If they don’t figure it out soon it won’t really matter who is at QB, they’ll be running for their life

We are ranked 32 in money spent on OL. That speaks volumes. Something we surely will be addressing moving forward.

Yes I did hear that stat. And one of the cheapest offences in general I’m pretty sure? But offset by one of the dearest defences. I haven’t got too far involved in to what linemen will be going early next season in the draft but I’m hoping we invest on the OL sooner rather than later. Not only does this help protect our QB’s (And more importantly hopefully what will be our franchise QB for a long time in Pickett), but also this helps create holes for another first rounder in Najee. Kid is a stud, but you can’t run through gaps that aren’t there

Yep, Harris almost got killed last season, the amount of punishment he took. Sure way to prematurely end a guys career (see long line of Seahawks RBs also killed due to cheap poor OL). With a franchise RB and QB now, and a good platoon of WRs/TE, and a solid D....surely all resources will be poured into OL (and LB) moving forward.

We'll have a new GM too doing this. Don't think we announced a hire yet

Don’t let Nagys mis handling of Trubisky make you dismissive him too early GG.
He’s nowhere near as bad as his final season with us suggested View attachment 1490065
I love that stat. But Pickett drafted #20 overall means hes gonna start sooner than later and Trubisky a backup

Another week and another win. Yes it’s pre season, but winning form is good form. Mitch done what he had to do today I feel to lock up the starter job, especially those final 2 mins before the half. A couple really nice throws there to the likes of Pickens and Freiermuth. His deep ball to Johnson early was nice too. Pickett again looked good when he got his chance after the half. Completing 10/14 for 90 yards I believe (2 of the 4 incompletions were drops). He seems to always put the ball on the money and doesn’t seemed fazed out there.
Injuries to TJ Watt & Johnson were sour notes (Even though they have since been reported minor). It was also announced that Harris has been dealing with a Lisfranc injury through the pre season. IMO the 3 (Or pretty close to top 3) players we can’t afford to have out this season for any length of time would be Watt/DJ/Harris so to have all 3 banged up on the cusp of the season is not ideal. Claypool did not play either today (Undisclosed), watching last weeks game he came down with a catch and got up holding his wrist/fingers from memory and then never seen the field again afterwards. I wonder if this could be the reason for sitting out today, and if so, how serious is it? Our OL still worries me greatly but I feel everywhere else we will be ok, especially if the run defence stiffens up. I’m not expecting to make playoffs in a deep AFC but I think we will be knocking on the door of that wild card spot if our QB play can step up-Especially in spite of the offensive line

Pittsburgh has released linebacker Marcus Allen, cornerback Justin Layne, running back Anthony McFarland, offensive lineman Joe Haeg, and offensive lineman Trent Scott.

Allen, Layne, and McFarland were all Steelers draft picks. Layne had the most experience, appearing in 43 games with no starts since Pittsburgh selected him in the third round of the 2019 draft. Allen appeared in 33 games with three starts for Pittsburgh. And McFarland appeared in 13 games for the franchise.

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers plan to re-sign Allen after the team places safety Damontae Kazee on injured reserve. Kazee is expected to return from injury at some point in 2022, which is why he needed to be on the initial 53-man roster.

Pittsburgh has officially acquired linebacker Malik Reed from the Broncos and offensive lineman Jesse Davis from the Vikings.
