Haddin ruled out of the one day side so it looks like Paine will be first choice.

I hope they let him open, he is not suited coming in down the order and chasing quick runs.

For team stability/structure, I'm guessing he would bat at 6/7? ALSO - anyone know why Dane Anderson was sacked? Does anyone think he will make it back?

Haddin ruled out of the champions trophy as well.

Paine's going to get a good shot to show what he has.

i disagree - unfortunately, he won't get a good shot... for tasmania, he opens. for the a team against pakistan, he opened.

particularly in the one-day game, a wicket keeper no longer demonstrates what he has by his wicket keeping. his batting also comes into consideration.

but paine is not a number 7. i don't believe he's a guy who can come in and shore up an innings. and whilst he's capable of coming in and bashing late runs, i don't really thinking it's something that he's going to be able to do with any regularity.

not that i expect anything else... barring injuries, haddin doesn't open. with the champions trophy coming up, which 'we' are trying to convince ourselves is a prestigious tournament, i don't think now would be the right time to start experimenting.

He's been opening? As was Haddin last one-day series?

Anyone know what happened to Tom Friend? Left Arm Fast Bowler from The Knights, made the Tas Under-19 and Under 17 team in the same year. Then selected for Aus Under 17. Reminds me a bit of Mitchell Johnson actaully..
But any news? Last i heard he had stress fractures in his back but that was 2 years ago..

I am hoping that Cleve Hughes was a better cricketer than footy player

Interesting to note that very few of those players have kicked on with it really.

Good signs from Cowen and Wells, we need to be stronger at the top of the order this year.

btw what was it Diva scored in county cricket the other day? Double century I think? How I miss him.

Anyone want to take a stab at Tassie's starting 11 in the Shield?

Wells
Cowen
Bailey (c)
Marsh
Birt
Paine (W/K)
Butterworth
Krezja
Geeves
Griffith
Denton

Anyone find it weird that Tassie are on the mainland playing practise matches, and Birt is playing a futures league match in Fremantle, WA?
Coming back from injury? Surely he's in our best 1 day team!

*Assuming Paine is back from India and Hilfenhaus is in the test team...

He is playing the futures league, because he has averaged about 10 for the last year of shield cricket. Sure he is in the best 1 day team, but give him the opprotunity to score some runs in the longer version so he can get a game in the Shield team as well.

It is in Tas crickets best interests for Birt to be scoreing runs in both formats of the game. Over the past 2 years, he hasn't done that. He has killed it at 1 day cricket, and been pretty average at two day cricket.

I'd imagine their will be a real battle for the all-rounders spot between Butterworth and Faulkner this year.

Good to see plenty of depth pushing up for spots, particularly in the bowling department.

I think my team would be the same as yours hotdish. Important we get some early points from our first three on the road.

* Squads as named, batting order my guess with extras left below...

Some good competition there: Doolan v Irvine in shield; Faulkner v Butters in 1dayers...

No Marsh in the 1dayers - great to see the kids get a go...

Can anyone tell me much about the new keeper? How strong is his batting?

PS - I'm spewing that X Doherty didn't make the 1day squad to India ahead of Holland from Victoria!

From a fellow expat I give the following report given to me by a Kingston resident.

Knows which way to hold the bat but could take time to mature into the Shield, not in Paines class but will be fine behind the stumps to the quick men.

SA squad for this game, there is some talent there but it's also very inconsistent. A good score on the board should see us be too strong.

Daniel Harris, James Smith, Michael Klinger, Tom Cooper, Mark Cosgrove, Graham Manou (capt, wk), Aaron O'Brien, Dan Christian, Mark Cleary, Jake Haberfield, Peter George, Chris Duval, Cullen Bailey.
