Can only assume that he asked for number 2 after Thommo was made captain and was given number 1 but was only captain for a year. By. 1979 the tradition of the captain wearing 1 was abolished with Ray Shaw keeping his 23. We haven’t had a captain wearing 1 since.

As far as tell 1 was vacant in 1979 and then in 1980, Ricky Barham claimed it, handing in his 43.

Apparently on one of Dyl Buckley's pods they gave Perryman a call and asked him which number he's taking. Said he wanted 9 but reckons Houston will get it and didn't mind 12. Says he doesn't want another high number so probably little chance HH gets the tap on the shoulder to vacate the 36.

For what it's worth Mason Cox said he was assigned #46 and kept it because his locker is off on its own, all the way at the end of the room. Mase said he needs 2 or 3 lockers "legitimately" so likes the number because over there nobody bothers him.

Also I suspect once Cox is no longer at the club, #46 will cease to be used permanently by a player due to the reduced list sizes. It'll be used temporarily when there are more players than the max list size due to MSD additions, but Cox will be the last to wear it on a consistent basis.

With 42 not being used, standard list size has us going from 1-43, and then two Cat B players would use 44 and 45, but if we theoretically were to draft an MSD player mid-year before signing Alex Condon as a Cat B, it's possible that MSD draftee could be #45, and Condon would become #46 - Maybe Condon ends up feeling the same way Cox does about the extra room and keeps the number?

Couple of questions around the numbers:

With Perryman sliding into 12 next to HDM, are we quietly developing a 'Harry section' in the locker room, presaging a move to include Dan M as part of a trade for Harry McKay?

Also, I hope the club is doing serious due diligence on any surnames that might take on 45 any time soon. Sliding in between Long & Cox, it is no minor consideration.

(And no, I'm not sleeping well these days...).
