Djukerra - Back Pocket
The man has all the attributes to be a good contributor. Looks a dead set back line player to me - I cannot understand why we have never given him a go there. He is pretty accountable. Has good defensive, tackle skills. His one flaw is he does not really know where to get enough of it when up forward or in the middle. This is just a glaring oversight by a club in dire need of this type of player back there.

LAKE - Full Forward: JONES:Full Back/Centre Half Back
Contested marks and marks in general are several times more valuable up forward then down back. This is the power forward we have always had. Once the stay at home Gehrig like forward retired, Franklin and other forwards started running up and down the ground, Lake should have gone forward and we would have had our flag back in 2009. Better credentialled students of the game have called for this move for years. How much more confidence would our young pups have now with the Lakestar in the goal square? How harder would it be for opposition defenses to rebound, how much more accountable would they be? How many of my fellow Bulldog supporters wish this would happen? Not for part of quarter, not a quarter when he is out of form or injured - just play him there.

Sherman - Out ( there is really nothing to say this was a mistake and he is going nowhere really fast)

Smith - Forward Pocket
Showed in his debut game with 4 goals he has some nous up forward. No one is crumbing our talls. This too is a glaringly obvious choice.

Grant
Play him

MID GAME OPTIONS
When Griff is being tagged out of the game, throw him on the half back line , move Murphy up forward or on the ball.
Mix it up a little. DeLeidio for Richmond has in a similar fashion gone down half back and had great games when he has been tagged out of the game in the middle. Again another obvious option.

Cross - forward
Has great marking hands. Body for body, size for size hard o beat. He is a better kick than we have all convinced him to be. Again an obvious option when the forward line is failing.

His ball handling might be a problem in the backline, for a player of his size he isnt as clean as he has to be, would only be magnified with the forward line pressure on him

Agreed. Massive case of the fumbles.

Markovic to the forward line was recruited as a forward and trained to be a defender, worth a shot

And have his opponent continuously turn him inside out and kick 6 on him every week.
Still think it would be worth a try in an attempt to get as much out of Cooney as possible. The half back position is now more of a run and carry role now anyway which suits his pace. Don't forget that in the past great players such as Keith Greig and Doug Hawkins made a name for themselves as back flankers because they couldn't move sideways anymore.

The move of Cross to a forward pocket must be worth a try. With Boyd, Libba, Wallis, Smith..... we don't really need another in and under player. Cross is a great overhead mark. Tell him to start from the goal square and try and take a mark within 30 metres of goal and then kick it.....DO NOT HANDBALL.

There is some merit in skoosh's suggestion, but you are correct that he couldn't play on someone as such.

There's merit in Cooney not needing to have to do any 180 degree turns, to run as straight as possible and to dish it off quickly.

The solution might be that Cooney plays a sweeper role, although Bob Murphy is doing that for us at the moment, but perhaps Cooney could be the plus one, while Murphy plays true HBF and runs off his opponent - that could work. Might be nice having both Murphy and Cooney running off HBF - couldn't be any worse than what we have now.

Dogs fans might recall that Dougie Hawkins often played that sort of role in his twilight years.

The main problem for Cooney is that he would occasionally have to sit in the hole and have blokes like Buddy and Cloke running straight into him, which wouldn't be much fun.

I remember one game in the early 90s, one of Saverio Rocca's early games, and Libba got stuck in the hole, backing up with the flight of the ball, and Saverio came out on a 30m lead, took it on his chest above Libba's head, and planted both of his knees into Libba's back without missing a stride - ouch, that would have hurt - I grimace just recollecting the memory.
