players names on the back of guernseys

Seen many Cleveland LeBron or Denver Carmelo jerseys being worn around the place recently? Whether you keep them or not is irrelevant. You can't wear them. If the player leaves and you still wear his guernsey to games the next season, you look like a guy who's been dumped by his girlfriend three months ago and still has a profile picture of them together on his Facebook.

Nah because it's still a sour taste for Cleveland and Denver. I do see guernseys being worn of retired NBA players that have played for 2 teams though.

I wouldn't wear the jumper while Judd is still playing obviously but he was still a gun player for WC and a premiership captain. I wouldn't be ashamed to have the jumper. Look at Geelong, I'm sure plenty of people have the number 29 on the back which can only really be for Ablett. So is their any difference in having the name as well?

If you don't want it then it's a bad investment and buy another one. Or even buy one with no name or number. The AFL isn't going to incorporate people not wanting to buy another guernsey if they decide to bring it in

Daniel Giansiracusu will need to spend time in the gym, his shoulders arent broad enough for all the letters.

Just imagine if one of his parents was married to a hyphenated partner, it could end up being
something like Giansiracusu-Love-Murray, although that would probably be ok for the doggies but he would need to be traded asap if he played for the dons or pies:D:D

It's Cam Guthrie now and he is every chance to be a 10+ year player for the Cats. And I bet when Ablett was starting out, there were a bunch of people getting around in #29, because of Hinkley. That's the cool thing about AFL guernseys. For the most part, they rarely make major design changes and the numbers evolve through the years. You can buy a new guernsey every year, or you can wear the same one (with a number on it) for twenty years. You can have an original yellow peril #3 that was obviously for Mainwaring, but then it goes to Judd and on to Gaff. You wear it to a game these days and people can associate it with whichever #3 they want. Same with Glendinning/Sumich/Kerr, McKenna/Kennedy, Jakovich/Darling and so on.

Never, numbers are enough for me

If you can't recognise your players, you obviously don't watch/go to enough footy

Aww fair go ! If, as I do, you live in Sydney and follow a team from another state, it takes a while before you start recognizing the new players every year. Names on jumpers in the NAB Cup would be useful so that we could get used to the new players. I don't know that they would be necessary during the season proper. Also, didn't they have names on the jumpers in the International Rules matches ?

its a great concept. if you dont want to buy a jumper with a name on it, then dont get a jumper with the name on it.

most sports in world have it and most people new to the game would look for the names. its not just about fans who know all their teams players and corresponding jumper numbers. when it comes to coverage, merchandising etc, afl has always been behind and with this its no different. there is simply no downside to it.

i don't see what the problem is - those advocating to keep names off are doing so from the position of watching it at the game, whereas most of the viewing audience is on TV. the names will be too small to read at the games, so people will still have to refer to their records anyway and people at home, who don't have the record, can see who's playing.

People who know the game only care about their own team, and will have sound enough knowledge of whos important in other teams.

People who don't know the game, arent going to be enticed because we can see their names, they will be enticed because they like the game, if they like the game, and start understanding it, they will get to know the basic players. Jumpers do have numbers, it aint that difficult.

It has been happening for a hundred years, no- one has ever had any problems the way it is. If there was a problem, it would have been fixed already.

Names would still be too small and almost unreadable for TV viewers because the camera is almost always side on and zoomed out, names would only be 100% readable when there is a close up shot looking at the players back which only sometimes happens when their lining up for goal/have taken a mark somewhere on the ground or when the ball is staying in a small area (would still be hard to read because the players are moving and have other players moving around them).

it's not zoomed out at stoppages. i understand the argument of it not having been a problem for a hundred years, which is fine in Victoria, to a footyball going public, but with considerations of expansion into markets where you'd want the audience to invest in players and teams emotionally, you'd want to make it as easy as possible for them to know who the players are, surely?

incorrect. if people can identify with other teams' players better they would have knowledge. noone remembers a number. people rememeber a name. people want to be able to identify quickly the players people are talking about. people dont want to ask, dont want to research. just want instant identificantion.

i find it handy when watching rugby with some mates with the names. then I can say, "hey that Folau looks great" and not "hey that number XX looks great'. who watnts to say it like taht, seriously? next time i watch same game, then i will remember the name, not the number.

and all this talk about attracting people because its a "better game" is crock of idealistic bullshit.

as for whats been happening for 100 years, nearly all other sports reverted to having names. they clearly see thats the better way to go and it was more valid when there was no tv. so it is a problem that needs to be fixed.

Doesn't league only use names on the jerseys for state of origin? Does rugby use names on the jerseys at all? The rugby codes (whichever you want to use) are probably not the best examples. Even more than Aussie Rules, the number pretty much identifies the player anyway, because it tells you what position he is playing.

not even close

I doubt even a great pilot could land a 747 on the MCG because of the high stands. Remember that guy that landed the plane on the Hudson river, maybe he could do it. Maybe Goose too. Top Gun, pretty good flick. Bye.

i'd like to introduce you both to my good friend, hyperbole. :p

Would surely make it a lot easier for the supporters, especially when trying to identify players from opposing clubs.
Purely for television...

Nobody at the game will be able to read the names on players' backs. They recognise players by their physical appearance, their running gait and the number on their back.

Footy fans have coped pretty well without the need for players' names on the back of guernseys, but I suppose we have 18 teams nowadays and half of those teams give games to 1st and 2nd year teenagers

There are more "no-names" in today's game than ever before.

Is there a reason why this is not done?
If people are reading the names on the backs of players' guernseys, they are not reading the advertising signage

Should have been done years ago. I think it'll help modernize our game. Looks more professional. Most importantly, it'll help newcomers to the game. What's funny however is you see more and more fans putting the names on their jerseys anyway.

We don't need modernizing, that is the trap NRL fell into and it lost it's soul. The players there are walking billboards now. The strength of our game is how it has held, for the most part, onto tradition, the club songs, the uniforms (albeit some have undergone radical change) etc...

Not a fan of it at all.
The sport of Australian Rules in it's various leagues has survived long enough with out it. With out getting people off side it seems more this is asked for by youth who's very nature is to strive for change or new fans of the sport.

But if the current PM has a say well...........

Do rugby league have names on the guernseys, I watch a little bit of rugby league and have never seen names on there back. Unless I just haven't taken notice and they do have them.
