Players weights to no longer be disclosed

Probably best to discuss that on Bigweightliftingy or Bigboxingy as they are different sports.

Didn't say it was irrelevant, just that you don't need to know the specific number to be able to judge a player. You would have no idea how accurate the published numbers were to begin with.

Yeah, don't know how the average fan is going to survive next season groping around in the statistical darkness, absolutely clueless how heavy a player is.

The fact that individually it's not going to make a great difference to fans isn't really the point. There are endless stats that they could do away with that wouldn't make any significant change to people watching at home but it doesn't mean they should

Who really cares about players weights? Should we have their IQ and the size of their wang up as well?
That's like saying who wants to see MMA fighters or boxers weight, obviously for their weight class. The fighters will even come out and say they want to lose or gain weight for fights. Very similar, there's fans who do want to know players weight progression. Definitely another case of political correctness gone mad hiding relevant player attributes.

Nah, height is still relevant without weight seeing a fair few positions are height dependent. I.e. you won't get a 195 cm small forward, as much as you wouldn't get a 178 cm ruck.
Height is relevant with weight. A 200cm 80kg ruck would never succeed in the league.

Kornes just said that AFL are banning the disclosure of players weights.

So commentators or spectators will no longer be able to tell the difference in weight between say a Jefferson and a Curnow anymore.

Would AFL be the first sport globally to come up with this soft s**t?
I'm going to be that guy here

The world (particularly Australia) has over indulged political correctness on the off chance something might offend someone somewhere.

The more and more it's done, the more and more we will see shit like this occurring.

Just wait another 5 years and see what it's like then. Only going to get worse.

I for one frequently look up player height and weight for a multitude of reasons. It's hugely relevant for the contested aspect of the game, and I imagine other deeper analysts would be interested too. The argument that we dont technically "need" to know is completely irrelevant. In this context it is a relevant data point to the game of football.

Does anyone else think this has the whiff of a Laura Kane decision with a subconscious female bias for the AFLW? She can't politically do it for the women's game only, so she needs to do it across both leagues. I can see more AFLW players finding it concerning (particularly the "overweight" ones) moreso than AFL players.

Coincidence this comes out the first time we have a female leading the football side of the game or is this driven elsewhere?

Height will be next because the Lachie Neales and Zach Merretts of the world might develop a little man complex.

And then finally gender because in 2024 what is a woman and a man anyway…?

Spent last night at a drag bar and even I’m not sure anymore.

Dillon if you are reading the term “women’s” football offends me, tidy that up while you are at it please and thank you.

Other than silly analogies, no point has been made to support removing weights being listed.

It's a contact sport with a number of different positions to which a player's height and weight is imperative.

It gives significant insight into a player's strengths and weaknesses. I.e wines is 100kg, for his height that's well above average, it makes more sense why he's hard to move off the ball. But you'd think with that weight he should or could be a damaging resting forward (this is an example, please don't respond saying why I'm right or wrong about Wines)

On Pixel 6 using BigFooty.com mobile app
I’m pretty sure you could deduce all that stuff just from actually watching Ollie Wines play.

Ahh classic AFL. Let’s not focus on the bigger issues like the rampant recreational drug use that’s rife through the league, instead let’s focus on not publicising player weights!

Seems like a top priority there.

Wonder if any player has ever even raised this as an issue or someone sitting in their office was just upset on their behalf.

To be fair, “let’s not publish player weight” is an easier thing to do than “let’s fix recreational drug use”.

We’ll have peace in the Middle East fixed before we have recreational drug use fixed.

I think they've pretty much fixed recreational drug use anyway, just ignore it unless game day and if anyone is silly enough to get caught outside of that then send in the PR unit.

If Laura Kane is anything like the female bosses I’ve had, she would have canvassed and consulted appropriately …

  • Been told that published weights aren’t accurate anyway.
  • Been told that published player weights rarely if ever contribute to public or media discussion.
  • Been told that banning it in the darkest hours of the off season would generate content and discussion that’s a welcome relief from the monotony of “player X is training the house down”.

… and she would have felt that it was probably the easiest decision she’d made that day.

Goodbye to "Player X is training the house down and lost 3kgs over the preseason" articles? :'(
Jurnos can still write the articles, they will just need to get the info directly off the club or in an interview with the player it’s not like they would of used the dodgy info that was provided for the afl app/record that is wrong half the time anyway

Some seem to think that the clubs won’t have the information available but it’s just that it’s not being provided to the public via the app

It’s been this way in the AFLW since its inception.

Bizarre decision. I've always enjoyed reading up on which young players have put on some extra muscle in the off season.
What's next, disclosure of players date of births to be made secret?

But the weights are not accurate, do you enjoy reading fiction about football?
