Players weights to no longer be disclosed

I'm going to be that guy here

The world (particularly Australia) has over indulged political correctness on the off chance something might offend someone somewhere.

The more and more it's done, the more and more we will see s**t like this occurring.

Just wait another 5 years and see what it's like then. Only going to get worse.

I for one frequently look up player height and weight for a multitude of reasons. It's hugely relevant for the contested aspect of the game, and I imagine other deeper analysts would be interested too. The argument that we dont technically "need" to know is completely irrelevant. In this context it is a relevant data point to the game of football.

“They’ve decided in this day and age it is inappropriate for weights to public matter, in a publication like the Season Guide.

“They would say that people support that it’s not appropriate to publish weights and that it’s private information now.”

I do find this funny in tandem with their changes to the way clubs must report the injury list this year

Geelong wouldn't report injuries properly claiming that players medical records were private and shouldn't have to be on the public record

AFL have strong armed them on that and are forcing all clubs to report more accurately this season

Then at the same time the AFL are removing weights from publications because it is private information :drunk:

Oh, weights unlike player availability aren't relevant to betting companies you say

Players are all "mass density fluid" now

Your example was a 200cm 80kg ruck - one look at the player would tell you they are not robust enough for AFL.

Also you do know that AFL player weights are not accurate right?
This.

Harden the **** up you soft *****. Its none of your business what players weigh.

is it because they don't trust the clubs to accurately record data on spreadsheets?

you could make an argument that removing the weight info is in support of young men who may have their own body images issues feeling pressure to live up to the standards of athletes. fairly sure it's not woke to discuss men's health.

that in mind, rather than remove weight info the afl could instead use some of their proactivity to incorporate men's mental health discussions around body image. this can keep young men healthy, and keep those worried that young men are left out of conversations about health happy too.

This.

Weird decision. Not a fan and suspect it will be reversed in time, maybe even before 2024 kicks off.

That being said, you should be able to get pretty close to the mark with almost all players just on sight.

Also, it's clear clubs have been pretty half assed about updating heights and weights for a while now.

I expect the NRL to use this as an angle to attack the AFL.

But I also don't think this is going to be the loss some people think it is.

I’m generally for change and not a “the world’s gone mad!” type, I think, but this is ****ing ridiculous. Of course weight is a relevant stat when it comes to match-ups.

There’s not a single overweight player in the AFL and there never will be, it’s not an issue. As if they give a shit about it being public.

Players don't get mocked because of the official weights published by the afl, they get mocked by how they look. Stringer and J McGovern looked out of shape and they have been made fun of. Whether you think that is ok or not, stopping the publication of these stats won't stop it.

How many times have you judged a matchup based on the player's weight as listed on a website or in a footy record compared to just using your eyes? I mean I have never done this so I'm interested if it's something other people do a lot.

If the AFLW PA want this that’s cool that’s what they want.
Surely AFLPA didn’t seek or endorse it.
People got to realise across all facets of the work force the higher your income the more transparent, accountable, open to scrutiny you are.
Imagine the money that would leave the game if the media couldn’t shit can players and coaches.
The players wear it because they understand that comes with the territory of banking 10 grand a week.

I look at weights a bit when thinking about matchups etc… I find it interesting because some players who look skinny are actually deceptively heavy and strong.

It’s mostly around KPPs, but guys at 103kgs are a lot harder to shift than those at 95kgs. None of these guys are carrying much fat.

See how our young players are progressing

Interest in opposition players recently drafted

Comparing match ups of rucks KPP between teams on any given day in terms of match ups

Comparing midfielders and relative size of different midfields

It's not that complicated.

This line of argument has already been refuted, true fans/students of the game want this information well before the game starts, for various reasons

The fact that you can judge with your eyes once they're out there (lol) is irrelevant

We're being deprived of useful information, that we've always been given, without justification

And no "the weights aren't accurate" doesn't cut it either, all we need to know is a ball park idea of their pre-season weight, it's never been a problem before and isn't now
