Players you hated to see retire?

All players I hate seeing the retire as they all bring something unique

......

Except Stephen baker

Good riddance to him

After layering to his open mike interview I have very little respect for this man....sorry none

Everyone else I hate seeing retire

Robert Harvey and Matthew Richardson are the 2 that hit me hardest so far. Harves in particular was my hero and had been playing for St Kilda since before I was born, I just couldn't imagine the team without him.

On a different note it's also disappointing to see blokes retire before their time e.g. Aussie Jones in 2005 having just turned 29 and still in AA form.

Unpopular opinion alert. Can I nominate Luke Ball. Guard of honour. Praised by every single person in the media. Collingwood fans acting like he's one of their greatest ever players despite the fact he stunk in the drawn grand final. Fantastic person. But if we carried on every time a player of Luke Ball's calibre retired we'd only have retirement threads on bigfooty.

Ball's situation is somehwat unique though because of the work he does as part of the AFLPA. Enormously respected by all players and is regarded as the patron of the football fraternity. As a result has close links with a large proportion of the footy media.

When you consider on top of all that, the fact he was a very good footballer who gave two clubs excellent service the reaction isn't so surprising.

Yep this. Plus what he went through with injuries (OP in the early days and an ACL later on) yet still forged a very solid career makes him even more respected, IMO.

Glenn Archer because I was always that annoying 6 year old kid down at training in my woollen number 11 North jumper bugging him about everything. Never said no and was brilliant to me and my family. I remember watching Port tear us to shreds in the 2007 Preliminary Final and I was almost in tears (I was 10), pissed off because we lost, and to see my childhood hero, favourite footballer and such an amazing person retire.

Jason McCartney. Well it goes without saying.

The 2008 final series was special. Three long-serving club champions were having one last dash at the premiership that was missing from their CVs.

Scott West, Robert Harvey and Shane Crawford.

All three had played over 300 games without a premiership. Only one would make it. It was sad seeing West and Harvey miss out while Crawford lived the fairytale. They all deserved a premiership.

Bit of a different tact but the one that hit me harder than anything was a bloke I'd played Ammos with for nearly 7 years. Was there when I first got to the club and in my first season really helped me through it (Teenager playing against men and was targeted as such.) Won premierships with the guy and was one of the hardest campaigners I've ever seen pull on the boots.

Got the honour of chairing him off the ground in his 307th and final game while the members/supporters cheered him off, will always be my favourite footballing memory above anything else I've achieved in the sport.

Except that West didn't feature in the 2008 finals.

Nicky Winmar, Andrew Krakouer, Michael Long, Gavin Wanganeen, Peter Burgoyne, Ronnie Burns and Leon Davis to name a few.
