What the?

Of course it's a no brainer.
He is in the best 22. This 'potential' you mention isn't, and may well never be.

I agree but its not as simple as that. All of todays player were brought to the club on potential , the GFC must arrange the list in best way possible to maximise today and tomorrow's requirements. Every player that is required to be put on the main list this year requires another to be dropped off , its just about the AFL rules , lists and SC. If we have two picks at the end of this year plus Varcoe for our third. Thats 3 players that must go off the list. Ranga and/or Pods = 4/5

As long as it doesn't prevent him from playing , I don't have a problem which AFL list he is on. If he is prevented from playing because we have no LTI , then GFC will have to move him.

Dasher's last year I believe
Gamble I think will leave to get more opportunities as I think will West
Djerrkura sadly I think others such as T Hunt and Duncan have gone past him.

Then there is the possibility that Gary may head north and there is 5 spots open on the list that need filling I would think Pod's has shown that he is worthy of being given one of those places

Pure , I wonder if it is? It was probably anticipated that this draft would be thin and the picks we would have would be very late. Tactically , we decided to load up on Rookies. We now seem to have a lot of potential talent as Rookies , their are some kids that we would be very happy to have long term on our list , Varcoe2 for eg. Now along comes Pods and he really must be available for any game next year but it sort of puts a spanner in the works because we don't wont to lose talent that we want to keep.

Perhaps , it may just get down to injures. If someone has a bad one from now on (like 12 month type thing) they may just give him the pay rise but leave him on the Rookie list another year

Nah they wouldn't do it. Too much chance no one gets injured and then he can't play for the first 12 rounds. Imagine how much uproar that would cause.

Besides, in the hands of Wells, a rookie pick (which is of course what we get once we elevate Pods) is just as good.

Besides, he can only get his pay rise once elevated, and he deserves both the pay rise and the elevation. Nuff' said.

But you can't move him, once you do your list for the year you're stuck that way, and the club is not stupid enough to take that risk.

Besides I think you're forgetting with delistings and retirements we will have enough spots to upgrade whatever rookies we want (i.e. pods) and take 2-3 nd picks (I doubt we'd take more than that) so there's no problem.

Trade/delist Djerrkura, Gamble, Laidler, West

Retirement Milburn

Upgrade Pods A.Varcoe

There's 3 picks in the draft without even trying. There is no way Pods will not be elevated.

As I said , between now and the end of the year ie List submission deadline , IF a LTI occurs then that will give them another option.
There are advantages of him being on the Rookie list eg. his payments are discounted just like Vets , I think thats why Balme said they would need AFL approval to pay him more.

As the end of this football season approaches, if there are no LTI players that we know will not be playing till R12 then Geelong will have to consider elevating him. What that does for our Cap , recruitment of other players and other Rookies Elevations will then have to be reassessed.

Pods now worthy?

Without his marking power with Mooney up forward, you can forget a premiership, that's how important this guy has now become.
Especially now since Hawkins' has gone lame.

Dashers last year?
I wish he'd justify the idea and stop accummulating 30 possessions a game then, can we afford to loose him? if he was playing poorly I'd say yes, and fact is, he's so versatile.

Sadly Motlop could be gone as well if the club think his shoulder wont stand up to the rigours of footy.

I would hope not.

Given they decided to kill it by putting him out there before his body was ready, giving him time on the list to get it right and show what he can do is what we owe him.

He was truly wonderful today with 5 again. I was so annoyed the ump incorrectly gave the 50m to Chappy or it could have been 6 to Pods.

His tackling and second efforts were awesome, and we truly could not have won the game today without him, I have no doubt of that.

Outstanding performance. :)

Absolutely fanstastic today. His tackling is ferocious and it seemed every time we got a holding the ball decision it was Pods with the tackle.

The roar of the crowd when he finally kicks a 6th goal at Skilled is going to be enormous

Oh and I have to add that the funniest moment of the day was when just after he kicked the 5th, the ball comes into the forward line, poor kick because instead of going 1-1 to Pods it went further towards the square where the 2 ruckmen were standing, he jumps up 4 deep and gets a hand to it and it goes down. Pods deliberately (but fortunately not too forcefully) headbutts the turf as if to say 'poor work, I should've marked that', and we all behind the goals laughed and told him not to worry about it. Shows how much effort he puts in and how much he cares about winning each contest.

Must be rested. And yes it may cost us the game next week.

He will get another 'rest' game - listed as something soreness - but it won't be this week. Maybe the game against Adelaide, by then Mooney and hopefully Hawkins will be back.

Agreed. Won't be rested until Hawkins/Mooney are back. Mitch Brown will also get a game towards the end of the year.

Agree, but not next week.

Yes he is carrying injury, and as I said to SJ, that is obvious from how long he takes to pick himself up off the ground after a contest (that is what is hardest on your groin) but we definitely need him next week, and he made it through today, so with good management he should make it through this week. He's certainly not at the max rooke round 5 stage or anywhere near it, so I would think playing next week is realistic. I have already pencilled in the interstate trip the week after as his rest, so he can be back to his best at skilled the week after that.

You would think that he will be giving a rest inbetween now and the start of finals.... Mind you, we first have to secure a top four berth and make sure we are defintiely above Freo (for obvious reasons!).

He is just becoming a beast in a marking contest - that mark over Jimmy Bartel in the 3rd quarter was the most impressive i have seen all year from any player..... Literrally just put the dukes over two men, crushed both of them coming to the ground and still held it....absolutely amazing, and anybody who can flatten Jimmy Bartel has got some serious bulk.

Thought Pods was fantastic tonight. Faded in the second half, but when it mattered, the second half in particular, was clearly our best forward, and yet again demonstrated that he's the best 1 on 1 marking option we have in the forward half (despite us kicking it over his head a few times). Twas funny I sat next to the Dogs cheer squad and they were giving it a lot to our our players, Byrnes in particular, but no one gave any stick to Podsy, except one lady who wailed after his 3rd "why did you leave us" and I lol'd, thinking, you should've drafted him when he was in your backyard.

Laid some good tackles too, my only concern is that he seemed to injure his leg (maybe the groin again) laying a tackle in the 4th and finished in a tracksuit, so hopefully he's ok for next week.

That would have been one fun night , Pure. The first 15 minutes they would have plenty of vinegar , after that it would have just the sour taste left in their mouth.

On Pods. What he is good at is apparent. I still think he can improve , even at 28. For a start he needs to work on his upfield mark turn and ignoring his right side and being tentative Mark-kick players can be one sided but your really must be better than that in the AFL. I'd also like to see him just polish his ball drop , the goals he has missed this year has all been related to a bad ball drop when under pressure. The pressure he applied was great but it seems to always take it out of him. Perhaps its just that its been a long year , a lot of media and his body has probably had enough Superficially I'd like to see him go for Chappy haircut but thats just me. No matter what , he will be a better player next year because he will be approaching the pre-season as an AFL player for the first time in his career.

Was Pods slightly injured again in the Doggies game ?

If so give him a week or two off - as he will be a big asset come the finals - one we really have not had before in the finals campaigns over the last few years. A true FF who can lead or take a contested mark in the goal square.

Geelong look better to me when he plays - and he is way ahead of Hawkins at this stage as our preferred FF IMO.

So make sure he is right to go first week of the finals - especially against the Saints - as I think Pods will make their backmen more accountable. If they play Zac Dawson him and it is a one one competition - I like our chances.
