Interesting story but the story is getting clearer that Polly didnt have much to drink and was returning home after a post-match RFC function.
Still that bit of alcohol may have had its influence in Pollys awareness he wasn't blind as a bat. Still it's a realistic extreme story of how simple it is to be unaware of such things.
In Polaks case he was also dodging cars which may have compacted into not seeing the tram.
So many variables right now though as we dont know the complete story.
A club spokesperson said it was still unclear whether alcohol contributed to the accident about 11.30pm, after Polak had returned home to change his clothes.
"We're not completely sure if alcohol was a factor," the spokesperson said. "It was more the staff and the former players that were drinking at the function beforehand because the boys had just suffered a pretty bad loss and were in a terrible mood.
"They were certainly not at the this function getting blind, I can assure you."
After leaving his house, Polak was running for a taxi with teammates Cleve Hughes and Jordan McMahon across Dandenong Road, near its intersection with Orrong Road, when he was struck.
One teammate made it into the taxi, but Polak was hit by a number 64 tram travelling towards the city.
The impact with his head shattered the tram's front windscreen. But Polak, who is 196 centimetres tall, did not break any bones or suffer paralysis to his limbs.
Doctors put Polak in an induced coma because of bruising to his brain and were encouraged by some scans yesterday that showed there was no additional swelling since Saturday night.
Although Polak's condition has improved, he would be in hospital "for some time" and his AFL career was in doubt, he said.
Pissoff Pav for AA you moron, hopefully this alias gets banned as well. One trade Freo cant get wrong.
I've nearly been hit by trams many many times in my trips to Melbourne. Not because I'm being careless, but not growing up with them, you just don't get used to them.I'm surprised people aren't ____ed over every week by them to be honest. Granted melbournians are used to them but you'd think tourists and visitors would be there in sufficient numbers to have someone stuff up once a week.
sad news....i live off orrong/dandenong and saw the ambulance etc but didnt think to much of it until the morning when news broke it was polak. I suspect he was drunk because the dandenong tram line is straight for afew hundred metres so if he were sober he surely would have seen the tram...Lights are pretty good around the line aswell...Hopefully he makes a full recovery!
