Polak hit by tram?

They go pretty quickly down Dandenong Road and Orrong road is just at the bottom of a decline so it would have had a full head of steam.

So what how fast they go. Don't know what happened to Polak, but surely you have to look out before you cross any roads or tram tracks, besides I live just near there and there are pedestrian lights.

He is currently in an induced coma and lets hope he is ok.

First Kerr, now this. What a shame. I hope he feels okay.

How'd he get hit by it though? Run across the road without looking?

____, he's in a coma! Bruising on the brain. I hope he can play AFL footy again.

Polak stable after being hit by tram

hope to bring Richmond's Graham Polak out of an induced coma after he was hit and badly injured by a tram in Melbourne.

The accident last night left the defender with bruising on the brain and a spokesperson for The Alfred hospital said Polak's condition was critical, but stable.

Polak, 24, was crossing the intersection of Orrong and Dandenong roads at Armadale around 11.30pm (AEST) when he was struck.

While his condition has improved, Richmond club doctor Greg Hickey said Polak would be in hospital "for some time".

Team-mates Cleve Hughes and Jordan McMahon were with Polak at the time of the accident.

Hickey said Polak's condition had improved overnight and he was trying to move his limbs.

"The latest scan, which was done not that long ago, show there hasn't been any significant change in the situation," Hickey said.

He said there had been no extra swelling, which was an encouraging sign. Dr Hickey earlier said Polak had swelling on the brain.

"Initially, they were planing to keep him in an induced coma for two to three days," he said.

"Now the hope is they will be weaning things off this morning, and hopefully he will wake up ... and we will have a clearer picture of where he's at.

"Things are a bit more positive now than they were a few hours ago."

Polak's parents are travelling from Perth to be with their son, while his partner Alycle and Richmond team-mates were told last night of the accident.

Although Polak's condition is improving, he will not play again this season and his AFL career is in doubt.

"In terms of footy, it is unquestionable. He won't play this season - longer term beyond that, we'll just have to wait and see," Hickey said.

"He's certainly been moving all his limbs, which is a good sign.

"It's not like there are signs he is paralysed in any of his limbs. Probably the hardest thing to gauge at this stage is more his intellectual recovery, whether he will regain that - time will tell."

Richmond football manager Greg Miller said it was unclear if alcohol played a role in the accident.

"I'm unaware of that, it's not a concern for us at the moment," he said.

Polak has played 11 games for Richmond this season for a career total of 106 and was part of the team that lost to Carlton yesterday at the MCG.

Tiger veteran Matthew Richardson said: "It's a shock, but I don't know any details at this stage".

Absolutely terrible news, couldn't believe it when I heard it this morning.

I wish him a very speedy and full recovery. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

sad to hear, but the question needs to be asked, what was he doing on a tram track anyway? surely he wasnt just walkin on the tracks? BAC must have been high.

Let us hope it wasnt and was a freak accident, other wise, there will be another thing footballers cannot do

Just said on 3aw he has bruising to the brain and is in a medically induced coma.3aw news just said he is critical but stable and Doctors hope to bring him out of the coma later today.

Terrible news ! I just heard it while listening to the television (it's in another room) coverage of the Brisbane/Melbourne game. They said that he is in a coma in hospital (induced I think they said). I hope that he is going to be alright but, if it is as bad as it sounds, his football career could be over !

They dont know. Richmond said that he obviously wont play another game this season but when he is taken out of his medical Induced Coma they will see the damage. They said that it was looking good so far as there was little to no swelling of the brain.

It is quite possible we will see him playing again next season as long as there are no more complications.

Nathan Brown said on MMM that he hadn't been drinking, so it wasn't alcohol related

He should sit down with Tom Lonergan after he recovers. Tom was close to death, but has recovered to be and play well.

No better place for him on the planet than at The Alfred.

Get well Polly...
