Review Port Adelaide 2023 Intraclub Match @ Alberton

Just watched the two quarters that are up on the Port site...

2nd was very scrappy, but players from both sides were strongly competing, so didnt mind. The 3rd qtr really lifted a notch ot two, esp after around 10 minutes. Some great plays and individual efforts from both sides.

A lot of posters have panned the match, but IMO it is as good, or bad, as any intra-club match previously played. Great chance for the boys to see what they are up against, and what they need to do.

Watched jhf positioning at centre bounce and he seemed to stand well away from the ring, and opponent went to him like looking to check him. Was confused by this. His running pattern was more of a jog than gut running. Could understand that as his fitness prob not there and prob looking to pace himself. Anyway just one game sample so look forward to viewing against west coast.

yes was odd, never seemed to move closer in under the ruck/ball drop. Seemed to be worked over by a tagging opponent, deliberate maybe, to prepare him for the future?

It’s pretty standard of C cornes to not cover shit with glitter. He cops a bit of stick on here but it’s why he was a pretty good coach for the magpies. He isn’t going to blow smoke up the players bums that’s for sure, so his comments were actually refreshing to hear rather than the usual “best pre season ever” nonsense you often hear every year.

My biggest takeaway from the comments was less about players individual skills etc and more about gamestyle. Clearly they didn't play as the coaches envisaged. That's either a poor understanding of the gameplan, poor gameplan or because old habits die hard - and incremental change will always invite players to revert back to what they did previously when pressured.

Probably a mix of all 3, but better they call it out now and start working on it than assuming it's nothing due to preseason.

It is obvious they are trying to bring the ball back through the corridor more and play faster. It complicates the new style when the opposition has trained the same thing and knows exactly what you are trying to do. Wait and see next week.

I don’t think that is enough to account for the shanked kicks though. So many of them. Maybe just lots of rust.

Just watched... Coupla thoughts:

  • Rozee far above everyone else
  • Willem Drew was great
  • Sam Hayes looks more mobile
  • Williams didn't put a foot wrong (some exceptional kicks)
  • Bergman looks to have stepped up a notch
  • JHF was rusty but nowhere near as bad as the talk going around
  • Burgoyne feels a lock for best 22 now

Watched the second half on Friday arvo (and also a couple of regular season matches from the last few years over the weekend)

Thoughts

So much fumbling and double / triple handling the ball for such a good day for footy
JHF looked like he was trying too hard, trying to take on the world
Understandable and he'll learn from that
We will miss Amon's play making massively this year
I just don't see who fills this gap

Jones was the other one who stood out. Impactful with real burst speed.

He looked like he wasn't even trying hard 90% of the time

He has a swagger about him, which young players who are confident about their ability can show/strut. Players who come to mind are brad ebert before went to west coast, phil carmen, dangerfield. Hoping he is a bit like joel Selwood.

Underwhelming game and far too many people getting excited about some of the performances. What I saw was 40+ players dancing with their sisters and most looked like they didn't want to be out there.

Lets judge them on how they go against Freo & WC.

AKA internal trial. Too many people getting all pent up over a training run.
