They are 2-6 since the 2014 finals series. Says it all really. Maybe it's a hoodoo that's infiltrated the players' minds, despite the turnover in players. They know the club's finals record is crap so it fosters a lack of belief.

It looks even worse when all but one of those finals has been at home.

First time I’ve heard Ken described as a hoodoo.

The '21 prelim was the most inexplicable and shameful finals loss imaginable. Home final, week off, Port had smashed the Bulldogs less than a month previous, and the Dogs had since been on a merry go round finals tour of Tasmania, Brisbane and Adelaide without being able to return to their beds in lockdown Melbourne. The crowd in Adelaide would also be more partisan than usual for a final due to said lockdown.

Port's list was perfectly healthy and had ideal preparation. Despite this they failed to rock up at all and let the Dogs kick the first 5 goals of the game to snuff out the crowd and any hope within 15 minutes. The mindset of every Port player was completely off, it was almost like they'd been told to take it easy because they already had the prelim in the bag. It was the most WTF thing I can remember watching in football.

Any club worth it's salt would've sacked Hinkley directly after that game. Instead it was barely talked about or addressed at all, the same problems were present in the straight sets exit last year and last night's game was just a violent reprise of that disaster in 2021.

The 2021 Preliminary Final was eerie. There's been lots of one-sided finals over the years, but this was probably the strangest. The Bulldogs were very good and deserve all the credit, but to see a team playing at home, favorites to win, easy victors of their Qualifying Final and a weeks rest not in the contest at any stage from the opening bounce to final siren was very odd.

Port wouldn't have lost any fans with their brave and gallant efforts in the 2013, 2014 and 2020 finals, and were stiff not to win the 2020 PF. 2017 was an odd case - 5th and in the finals all year losing to an 8th placed team in extra time that had only made it due to fluke late season results - but it was the only close final in a lop-sided finals series. But the dismal 2021 PF performance, missing the finals altogether in 2022, a straight sets finals exit in 2023 and the terrible performance against Geelong (the Cats were very good to give them due credit) in 2024 aren't good signs.

But who knows? Since the stupid pre-finals bye was introduced there have been no end of odd finals results, perhaps the 2024 Grand Final might be played between Port Adelaide and Carlton?

People looking at Hinkley after last night's performance are looking in the wrong direction. When things got tough, the players didn't want to know about it. As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but...
If it's the coach's job to prepare a team mentally for finals, he should be sacked for being an abject failure.

If it's all on the players and the coach is unable to influence or motivate them, he should be sacked for being completely unnecessary.

You want Bevo from the Dogs?

I get the frustration of Port fans but if they sack Ken then I think they’re more likely to end up with a Neeld than a Longmire/Clarkson/C Scott.

...might as well keep eating vanilla for the rest of my life.

Most Port fans realise that Ken is a major problem but he is not the root cause. There are leadership issues all over the club that don't drive the standards required for finals footy.

The next coach is going to have a battle not only weed out the softness of the players but also the administration.

Seriously if we’re lowering the bar to “can’t kick it for them” then logic dictates that no head coach should ever get the sack. It’s an absolutely moronic defence for anyone let alone a 12 year coach that’s churned through over 100 players and still can’t get it done.

Don't you remember all those times in professional sport across the globe where they sacked all the players of an underperforming team instead of the coach because the coach can't kick/hit/throw it for them?

No, me neither.

He would’ve been sacked 5-10 times over in European soccer by now and his head would be on a spike in South America.

No one gives a shit if you finish top 4 if you get no where.

Did you know that the Crows have won more finals than us in the past decade despite not making finals for 7 years and us top 4 in 4 of the last 5 years?

Heck they at least gave themself a chance at a gf as well.

You love comparing the two SA clubs. How do you justify that? Pretty embarrassing really.

Stick your Ken love where the sun doesn’t shine as that’s where it belongs.
We had a finals record of 4 wins 11 losses from 2012 to 2019, and finished top 4 on four occasions for zero grand final appearances.
Chris Scott was widely criticised for our finals failures during that period, but the club backed him in and now we're in the box seat for our third grand final appearance in five years.

Port's finals record from 2020 to 2024 is not too dissimilar, so far it's 2 wins 5 losses.
Hinkley can turn it around if the club backs him in, and he gets the chance to clear deadwood from the list and coaches box just like Chris Scott did.

Ken’s on his third list already. He’s churned through more than 100 players and still can’t finish the puzzle. He’s done.

Lol just imagine even trying to draw any comparisons between Scott and Hinkley.

Chris Scott is an excellent tactical and gameday coach. Ken hasn’t made a single tactical decision since he walked into the box.

We just set the VFL/AFL record for worst consecutive finals losses in the history of the game bruv

Your argument is basically you shouldn't break up with your domestic abuser, because your next partner might actually be Adolf Hitler

Losing home finals is a disaster. Do you know how rare teams travelling interstate to win a final is? Some teams have never done it in their history. The Cats have only done it twice.

How you lose 5 home finals in 8 years is a complete calamity. They should get a new coach but there's no pressure externally because finishing top 4 and home finals keeps the sponsors, board and media satiated enough.
