She was still playing in April 2021, then became our coach just over 12 months later.

Another year and nothing much has changed. A few new faces but many of these girls still make the same basic errors. The skill level of some of them is absolutely shocking. Case in point, Amelie Borg has been playing for 3 years but she still cannot pick the ball up even when she is not under pressure.

I guess I am still in AFL Semi Final mode and anything the girls produced was going to be an anti climax after last night's gladiatorial contest.

Whatever the coaching instruction was today, especially at 3/4 time, must have been dogsh*t. Disappointed.

Our positives: Goody, Teakle, Dowrick. Moloney had good moments.

You can see a genuine game plan coached by Doc Clarke at the crows, I just can't see it with us.

Agreed. I did not want to say much because it can sound like another dig at Hinkley but it looks to me that Arnell has adopted his game philosophy in complete form. Doesn't reflect well on Arnell.

Definitely not my area of expertise in large part because I really don't care about the Women's program, it just doesn't interest me.

But I know they're trying to build a really talented young squad with an eye on the future.

Shane Grimm is head of the women's footy program, he took over from Juliet Haslam who retired due to health reasons.

Rachael Sporn was appointed Operations Manager in 2021 and was supporting Haslam then.

I hate how the Freo guernsey has a pink strip on it for no other reason than girls = pink.

The Temu knockoff aspect of some of the AFLW designs is so odd.

If the whole point is integration as a proper senior team deployed by the historical clubs, why dress them like they’re a separate oddity?

I have no issue with the way the team is developing. Yes it would be nice if it happened quicker but at the same time there are some realities about the situation that can't be ignored. We are coming from a very long way back but the progress is there. In 2022 we were basically uncompetitive in every game and the only way we could be vaguely competitive was to turn the game into a low scoring scrap. Last year we added some attacking flair and were able to compete in maybe half our games which was quite decent given we had a tough draw. This year we've been competitive in all of our games but just can't quite get the results. We are also now having to play without Cuthbertson, Ewings, Tahau and Young which is just way too much talent on the sidelines for a developing team that needs all hands on deck to have a chance.

As for today, we clearly went too defensive too early. That will be a lesson to Arnell and the team in general. They're still very much learning how to win games of football and the only way to do that is to put yourself in the position to win games regularly and actually figure out how to do it through experience. I have full faith we'll get there eventually but it's still going to take a couple of years.

Do you watch much AFLW? The vast majority of teams play like we do. Unless you've got a highly skilled team there's absolutely no point playing a sophisticated game plan because there are way too many basic skill errors that will ruin any plan before it comes to fruition. So AFLW is mostly an effort based thing.

No disagreement on the last quarter. They underestimated Freo IMO and thought they could grind out a low scoring quarter and still win. They need to learn from that.

It was mentioned in the commentary yesterday that there are something like 38 Irish players in the AFLW. I have mentioned this before but I don't know why we don't go and sign a few. Feels like an area we are being left behind in a bit.
